A while back SF fans got all excited when they learned that a big screen adaptation of the comic book hero The Green Hornet was in the offing. Then it was learned that Kevin Smith was seriously considering it as a project, but after that fell through nothing else came of it and the story just went the way of the dinosaurs.

Now, word out of tinsel town is Columbia Pictures has picked up the option for the film and purchased the rights from producer Neal H. Moritz, the holder of the property known as Green Hornet, Inc.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to be developing this world renowned property with the people who brought Spider-Man to the screen,” Green Hornet producer Neal Moritz said in a statement.

We will have to wait a little longer to see when Columbia will actually breath celluloid life into the legendary crime fighter, but they have stated that when it does get made it would be updated to contemporary times but follow the original mythology of the character.

I listen to the old radio shows. They are so cool. I love The Green Hornet.
I think the surest sign that there is intelligent life out there in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.

I was first introduced via the TV show (wish it were written better), then picked up a few radio shows at the Cobalt Club. My favorite OTR shows include X Minus One, Yours Truly Johnny Dollar (Bob Bailey version), The Adventures of Philip Marlowe, Escape and The Stan Freberg Show.

What are your favorites?

Love the old 60's series.  Hope they do this one right!  Jet Li for Kato!

Isn't Jet Li retiring? How about Jason Scott Lee? He played Bruce Lee in "Dragon". Actually, it would be best to cast unknowns, so we're not constantly thinking, "Hey, Jet Li really kicked butt!"

I would love to see someone like Christopher Nolan or J.J. Abrams direct.

Digging up this old thread.  The movie is happening and filming now for a 2010 release with Seth Rogen as the Green Hornet.

Details:
Columbia Pictures' big screen adaptation of The Green Hornet, scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2010. The action-adventure co-stars Nicolas Cage, Jay Chou, Edward James Olmos, David Harbour and Tom Wilkinson.

INteresting choice.  Not sure what I think.  But I really want to see the movie.  I too listen to and enjoy the old radio show.  The Black Beauty looks awesome!
I think it was Socrates who spoke the immortal words:  I drank WHAT?

Seth Rogen as Green Hornet. Definite mixed feelings on this one. Hopefully it won't be like when Will Smith was cast in The Wild, Wild, West. Phew! what a stinker! :smilie_bleh:

I am not buying Seth Rogen as the Green Hornet - unless they are doing a comedy - mocking version...that could be funny.  I used to watch the old spin-off from the Batman TV series.   It was great, but didn't seem to make it - even with Bruce Lee as Cato.

I try not to prejudge too much.  I am not quite sure if this is going to be a serious take or not.  I do know Seth Rogen can do drama too.  Have to wait and see how this works out.

Possible Green Hornet alternates(?):

Hugh Jackman
Eric Bana
Ben Affleck
Joe Flanigan
Hugo Weaving
Keanu Reeves
William Fichtner

Who would you pick?

I know this wouldn't happen, but I would like to see George Clooney in the role.  I always pictured the Green Hornet as an uptown rat-packish kind of guy.

Yeah, Clooney would have been a good pick a few years back but I think he's a little bit too old now for the part.  I like the idea of Joe Flanigan from SG: Atlantis or even Affleck.  But I'm still willing to see what Rogen can do.
