I'm kind of surprised by this. I had no idea they were making a fourth.

I feel kind of bad giving Michael Bay money, but as long as Peter Cullen is involved, I'll have to go see it.

Transformers 4 is filming in Detroit next week.  Need to figure out a way to get down there.  :)

Creditors aren't the only visitors to Detroit these days. The latest "Transformers" movie will be arriving downtown soon for filming on the blockbuster franchise.

Where others might see an embattled city enmeshed in bankruptcy battles, the filmmakers say Detroit is a welcoming place that they've used repeatedly for locations.

"Next week, we begin in Detroit on the big set we've built underneath the monorail," says "Transformers 4" producer Ian Bryce, referring to the Asian-style structures that have been constructed next to Grand Circus Park — near the People Mover.

Detroit will be portraying Hong Kong for the shoot, which is expected to run through the second week of August.

Work continued Thursday on the large outdoor set, which stretches from Washington Boulevard to Bagley. Signs and decorations have been installed on some storefronts to create the look of Hong Kong streets. According to Bryce, the sequences being done there are for the climactic third act of the film.

"There's a lot of control for cars and street action that we can't get in other places," says Bryce, who also has been here for filming on the first and third "Transformers" and "The Island."

Bryce said the movie expects to spend about $65 million during its time in Michigan. A change in location plans affected the anticipated $82 million announced by the Michigan Film Office in March.

The filming could be an economic plus for Detroit. The project is planning to spend more time and money in Michigan than during the franchise's 2010 stay for "Transformers: Dark of the Moon." Three years ago, the filmmakers anticipated spending at least $16 million.

Production in Michigan on "Transformers 4" started in late June. Locations have included Fairfield Township, the Michigan Motion Picture Studios in Pontiac, Milford, Warren, Troy and, this week, River Rouge. Filming also is set to happen in Lansing.

Back in April, Michael Bay, who's directing his fourth "Transformers" project, told the Free Press that some General Motors facilities would be used as locations. There has been a close relationship between the "Transformers" movies and the GM vehicles in the films.

The franchise about battling Autobots and Decepticons has helped turn the Camaro into an international superstar through the "Bumblebee" Autobot character.

Bay previously came to Detroit for 2005's "The Island," the 2007 "Transformers" and 2011's "Transformers: Dark of the Moon."

The Motor City remains a desirable location for the franchise, which is heading in a new direction with the fourth installment. This one stars Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci and Kelsey Grammer as well as Han Geng and Li Bingbing, popular stars in China.

"We're big fans of Michigan and Detroit. There are a lot of good things we look forward to here, including the cooperation," says Bryce.

Supervising location manager Ilt Jones says the Detroit filming will involve some pyrotechnics and "the usual 'Transformers' crash, bang, wallop."

Jones describes the Grand Circus Park location as an example of how a movie set can work well within a city.

"The People Mover runs right in the middle of our set and they're being great," says Jones, explaining service will continue through filming with only occasional interruptions of a few minutes. The "Transformers 4" crew is working to ensure the filming involves as few disruptions as possible to the city.

"We do our homework before we come anywhere near a place," he says.

I've enjoyed the other three Transformer films. My only objection to them is that they don't hold up to repeated viewings at all. Fun the first time through, but not so much after. I'll probably try and see this one in the theater though.
