This week I look at "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" from 1977.  Also some movie, TV & Trek talk and other geeky goodness this week on the podcast.  Enjoy!

Thanks Rick.  I really enjoyed covering this classic movie.  So much more I could have talked about.  Just a great film that still works today.

Loved the background info on this unusual and fresh movie of it's day.

Close Encounters is a must have for any sci-fi collection :)

Great show, Rico! I was an original CEOFTK fan when it came out and loved it even though I was only 9. The visuals still stand up.

Here is a pic someone took of the actual model of the mothership. Models in sci-fi movies, a lost art.

That's cool.  I always had this idea the model was a little bigger than that.

Funny how the mother ship was upside-down as it rose up from behind the mountain.

I didn't know why Roy got fired from his job just for getting lost at night in the company truck until I saw the prior scene of him at his job that was cut from the movie.
He worked at a power-plant and was given an emergency service call that he abandoned over a conflict of conscience - and then he got lost.

I agree with Rico, what's always been appealing about this movie is how normal (or dysfunctional) everyone is portrayed.
The neighborhood weekend BBQ was great - but was another scene that was cut due to time.

Melinda Dillon who played Barry's mom was also the mom in 'A Christmas Story' :)

As one of the few french speakers on the forum, I can say that the spoken french is quite good despite the actor's rustiness. His accent is also quite good.

Just listend to the podcast last night.  great podcast.  I still remember seeing close encoutrs in the theater.  I think the scenes that stand out for me the most is the police car chase secens with the UFOs.   Then there was the assortment of watcher's on the roadside that were interesting.  I have seen the original theathacl edition and the special edition.  I never seen the collector edition.
I am going with the best information that I have.

Richard Dreyfuss just tweeted this:

QuoteClose Encounters was released 35 years ago. One day we'll make a sequel where I return & have a difficult reunion with the kids I abandoned
