New Kindle's

Looks like a new Kindle Fire and maybe other Kindle's are getting announced today by Amazon.

Labor Day comes and goes and the tech industry spins into overdrive. Yesterday, Motorola and Nokia unveiled new smartphones. Next week, Apple is expected to unleash the iPhone 5. But today all eyes are fixed on Santa Monica, Calif., where Amazon.com—pardon the pun—hopes to fire up interest in its latest hardware.

Heavy speculation is that Amazon will unveil a new version of its popular 7-inch Kindle Fire tablet, and if rumors prove true perhaps a larger screen tablet as well. Amazon is also expected to refresh its Kindle eBook readers, likely with a model to compete against the read-in-the-dark Barnes & Noble Nook with Glow Light.

What else might Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos have up its sleeve when he takes the stage? Citing "multiple sources", The Verge tech site is reporting that Amazon could also announce, if not quite yet deliver, an Android smartphone. We'll have all the answers soon enough. The press conference commences at 1:30PM ET, and USA TODAY is on the scene.

They are making a MAJOR push on the streaming video and film content front. Thois would be very supportive of that.

That $299.00 model is very impressive. 1920 x 1200 res. and an 8.9" screen. WOW!

It's 199.99. I think they were selling last gen for 159 before stock exhausted.

It looks like there's a "non-HD" version of the new 7" that they will be selling that lacks certain features like a front facing camera that's going to be at the $159.00 price point. I think it has a lesser processor as well.

Looks like people are seriously upset that all models of the Kindle fire sold in the US will have ads and special offers on the lock screen and home screen, with currently no announcement about if there is an option to opt out of the advertising. I think they'll lose sales over this "feature".

Yeah, I don't particularly blame people. We have enough ads in the world right now without having to add it to the base OS of our devices. I'm surprised its all of them this time, I would have figured it'd just be the cheap one like last time.

The ads are there to reduce the cost. Anyone that complains about the special features really need to look at what it does. The screen saver is an ad. That's it and people save a bunch of money because of that.

Funny how this became a problem all of the sudden, reducing the costs of hardware and thus needing to add ads. Considering that Kindles deliver books from Amazon's book store, I'd figure Amazon makes enough on those sales to cover the costs.

I really hope this doesn't become a trend to add ads to every gadget and OS I buy from now on...

It wasn't a problem and no, you can buy a kindle and never have to pay for a book with the lending library and the public library system. The ads themselves don't interfere with reading your books at all. It's only a screen saver and a bar on the main menu. No ads pop up in the books or anything to disrupt your reading. Some of the ads are also pretty cool.

The latest ad I got was a teaser poster for Coma. Which I had never heard of, but think it might be a nice sci-fi series.

Well, if they're actually doing targeted ads relevant to book readers, then I'm not quite so bothered by it. Then that would be more like recommendations than advertising and I'd like that.

That's always been my biggest issue with advertising is that it tends to shoot too wide and its generally noise, nothing that I would ever find interesting.
