Produced in the 90's and still pretty awesome.
B5 won plenty of awards and recognition including, for two years in a row:

1996 Hugo Award for "Best Dramatic Presentation" awarded to the episode "The Coming of Shadows".

1997 Hugo Award for "Best Dramatic Presentation" awarded to the episode "Severed Dreams".

One of these days I'll watch this show.  Or at least try to.

It's really quite good. You just have to get over the effects in the first season or two. B5 was pioneering in CGI but the initial work is a bit...rough.

B5 was a good series. Yes, you have to get over the primitive CG and cheapo sets. But in order to really appreciate it, you can't watch just one episode. Because of the long story arcs, you have to follow it through several episodes.

In my opinion, they had a way superior cast to Deep Space 9.

Babylon 5 was awesome. One of the series I have on DVD. Worth a watch!! But Darmok I don't agree with you on the cast. I thought DS9 had a great cast.

If that's the CGI effects (according to the video)...I've watched worse.  x_x...oh I've watched worse.  But no, its in my netflix queue (or at least was) but I'm currently finishing up Buffy and Angel.  Once I'm done with those and B5 comes back to Netflix, I'll pick it up probably.  That or watch Star Trek.

Like you saw - the computer graphics created for B5 by Foundation Imaging got quite good and soon Trek and the other sci fi shows where using the same company for their effects.

It was my first impression of the aliens on B5 that put me off. Londo's peacock hair and G'Kar's Lizard/frog where pretty over the top.
I didn't give the show a chance till years later.

Not until I got over Teal'c's golden tattoo on SG-1 and discovered Rygel and Pilot on Farscape that I was ready to appreciate the Narn, Centauri and Minbari.

Babylon 5, Farescape and BSG are epics. Stargates SG-1 and Atlantis are pretty good too. If you missed any one - you've missed a lot.

KingIsaacLinksr

I haven't seen any of those three shows you mentioned at the last line.  (But are in-queue, except that BSG is ALSO not on instant streaming either >=(  ) (Unless I check again and it is)  I've seen all of Stargate though.  :)

That's cool.

When I think of the cast, I 'm also thinking of the characters as well. In my opinion, B5 went much darker with their characters than DS9. G'karr sacrificing himself, letting himself be tortured to save Narn and Londo having to watch...riveting...heroic. Two characters who hated one another are now in a situation where one is willingly being tortured and the other one is uncomfortable. The two actors who played those characters were very strong. Londo's slide into darkness has no comparison on DS9. His aide, Vir, started the series as a sort of wimpy comic relief and ended up his own man in the end. He grew. Lita Alexander was interesting while she was on. Garabaldi had an authentic alcohol problem, not a holodeck addiction (I know, that was Reg on TNG, but my point is there was no softening through metaphor). Yeah, the doctor was a little weak, but his walkabout was interesting. Plus, he had an addiction to stims. The two addictions painted much more realistic personalities for me.

While I feel that the captains on both shows weren't the most compelling, Sheridan did rebel against Earth and Earth Force in order to right a wrong. That's pretty intense. I also thought the Shadow War was scarier than the war with the Dominion. it was unfortunate that they didn't get to end the Shadow War well because they weren't sure there was going to be another season.

I think B5 went where DS9 was trying to go or wanted to go. And of course, Battlestar Galactica (Ron Moore version) is probably where they both wished they could have gone.

While I enjoy Trek Prime, it never allowed itself to go past a certain line. B5 crossed it in terms of the grittiness of its stories and characters.

Just my 2ยข. :)

I'll definitely agree B5 was much more dramatic then DS9 was, however the characters in DS9 definitely stand out in my mind more. This is completely subjective of course, I saw DS9 before B5, so to me it's the more memorable show.

Yeah, this stuff essentially boils down to what one prefers. It's fun to discuss, though. :)

Considering what was piloting those shadow vessels. Down right creepy!

Poodyglitz

True. One of the creepiest set of characters in TV sci-fi.
