Podcast # 320 - "Rocky Horror"

As a teenager in the '70s, "Rocky Horror" was a midnight movies staple,
Tim Curry's singing was amazing and Susan Saranwrap was pretty hot :)

It was a real poke in the eye to Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera"

I am so sorry I missed sending comments in.  I have a lot to say about it.

so here goes.

I was a teenager when a group of friends invited me to a midnight showing of a movie called "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" The van full of kids pulled up at my house, some dressed up, others not.  I got in the van rather skeptical of the whole thing.  I found out quickly that the whole evening was more of an expeirience than a movie.  I made the mistake of telling everyone it was my first time and was dubbed a Rocky Horror Virgin for the night.  RELENTLESS jabs and comments towards me the whole rest of the night.  :) 

I got to the venue, it was an old theater and I was surprised to see a big line of people waiting.  They had umbrellas, toast, spray bottles, and all sorts of other things.  We got into the theater and it was total mayhem.  CRAZY!  The movie started and frankly, it was campy, cheesey and silly, BUT with the audience participation it was HILARIOUS! Up to that point I had never laughed so hard.  It was such a unique experience, I had never been to a movie where people were getting up on the stage in front of the screen, and doing the dances with the characters on the screen.  It was probably the most entertaining thing I had seen up to that point.

I decided that night that I would go back as many times as I could, and did, a total of 7 times.  By the time I went to the fourth showing, I dressed up as Riff Raff, complete with the bald cap and stringy hair.  Even went up on the stage and did the Time Warp.  Those were the days.  I think as a young person interested in theater, sci fi and with it being so sexually charged it was a unique and quite stimulating experience.

Now, on to a more critical look at the film.    Even though I knew it had very mature sexual themes to it, it kind of went over my head because I was into the experience with all of my friends.  So I never really critically looked at it till after I was older.  After giving my heart to Christ I kind of left it all behind because of the morality of the whole concept.  No one in church would ever understand it if I went to the movie, because to them it was taboo and of the devil.  But after dropping the religious objections, I realized that this was a brilliant bit of writing, both music and speaking.  Why?  Well for one thing each song gave ou goosebumps, they were performed with excellence, catchy, memorable tunes.  Even though some were pretty on the edge, they were all done in the "Rock Opera" form.  Tim Curry was absolutely amazing in this film.  His singing was spot on and each line delivered like a pro. 

I like the way you did the podcast Meds, because I felt like it was more a documentary on it.  The story line always got lost on me because of the experience, so seeing it from the perspective that you laid it out was really great.

Even though some might find the sexual and horror elements objectional, it is something that any theater, comedy, geeky person should go experience if you dare.  I don't own the dvd, it's not something I would just sit down and watch for entertainment, it's the experience that drew me in, and that is what I loved the most about it. 

Phew, I guess I had something to say about it.  :)

Thank you so much for writing your comments up. I recorded this a few weeks ago as i knew I had a huge schedule and didnt want to let Rico down. Great Rocky Horror podcast from HawkeyeMeds.  It's been a favourite of mine from years, and found myself singing along to the clips played.   :laugh:

I sincerely hope that this film is not remaked in the future; it's like remaking The Wizard of Oz or Barbarella - totally illogical!! :vulcan

A few years ago I was touring around New Zealand, and found a statue of Rocky Horror creator, Richard O'Brian, outside a theatre in a town called Hamilton.  

I will have to find time to watch the movie again, and 'let's do the timewarp again...'

Terrific effort, Meds! You did great reviewing what is a very confusing and odd movie. I have never seen it in a theater at one of the infamous midnight showings, perhaps someday. I can recall becoming aware of this movie when it was released and be a bit scared of the ad campaign with the red lips!

I love this movie. I remember when I was in high school (in Phoenix) every Friday and Saturday nights some local movie theaters did Midnight Movies, and Rocky Horror was THE longest running movie here, seconded only by Dawn Of The Dead...Great podcast Meds. Sorry I didn't submit a comment, but, well, Joyce banned me from doing the Time Warp :)
