I am a bit shocked all you UK folks haven't made a post about this yet. I mean, it's the wedding of the century - right? Aren't you guys excited? Do you get the day off so you can go down and have a pint with the Queen? Lynn is much more excited I think than I am. She asked me the other day how many hours the TIVO can record - LOL! Anyway, cheers to the happy couple. :cheers
I guess because we are so saturated with the subject in our media since they announced the engagement!
Yes it is a national holiday so some of us will get the day off depending on your line of work.
I've been told that I will be woken up at the appropriate time by my wife so that I don't miss it. :(
And I believe I heard that Meds is hosting a big Wedding Day party at his house! He's decorated his house in all sorts of royal goodies!! :)

I'm in! But only if we also have a "Doctor Who" watching party too!
I am looking forward to this, I have found memories of watching Charles and Diana get married on TV live here in the states.
Carol and I would like to personally thank the royal couple for moving their wedding day :) Congratulations from the two of us !!
when is the wedding?

I am also looking forward to this. When Charles & Diana married - I couldn't watch - since I was in the army at the time. This one I won't miss. I like Katie - she is contemporary, and yet seems to have a lot of dignity. She is walking into this one with eyes open, and with more life experience than Diana - so I hope she is emotionally better equipped for the circus that lies ahead.
Should be interesting to see if the talked about succession order gets changed to give daughters the same rights as sons. I think each of the Commonwealth countries has to ratify any change like that - I can't imagine that would happen quickly.
We should have a thread? Where's the sci-fi influence? Where's the interest? (don't let my wife read this!)
Next Friday, Rick, we all get an extra bank holiday for it (but I'm not sure I'll be glued to the TV, unlike some :)

It is St. George's Day today - so I think we can file for a geek exception. :) No need to get Mrs. Feathers involved....unless you get too critical of the topic of course...
;)

Well, we certainly have plenty of threads that are not SF on the forum. But I'm detecting just a hint of resentment in some of these responses from the UK folks. I've always wondered how a land with a monarchy is viewed in these modern times. Is the idea of a royal family one people still respond to over there? Just curious.
Mostly, yes I think.
Media-wise, there's a bit of fuss over the fact that many are using the extra public holiday for an extended trip abroad rather than celebrating the event but when you look about at the other news on plans for street parties etc, there's still a lot of positive feeling towards them.
The other bone of contention, of course, is related to who is paying for all this when public services are being cut...
It's April the 29th, this Friday coming. We're having a party indeed and you all ate invited, in fact we ate having a street party (maybe) lol. Today is St Georges day and the ten houses in our close 8 have St Georges Cross on show (including mine) I on a personal view am a bit of a royalist. I don't agree with some of the expense (eg Prince Andrew) but with William I have high hopes for a better future for the Royal Family.
I'm glad it's on a Friday, Dr Who's on Saturday ;)

"Cry, God for Harry, England and Saint George!"
I just got an email from OfCom. My UK callsign is changing for 10 days in celebration of the wedding.

That's the spirit, Meds. I like the concept and institution of the monarchy. It's a great unifying focal point for the British people. We associate ourselves as Americans but it really is name only. There are far more things which divide us then unify us.

I heard about this on the radio. Is it mandatory? I thought they were suggesting that those who wanted to could apply to change?
I applied.
It is a holiday over here bit it will be mainly office workers, shop staff and so on that get the day off, it is my day off anyway and my wife will def have it on.
Hey UK folks - does anyone have a basic schedule of what time events are happening on Friday? Trying to setup the TIVO. I know we are five hours time different right now for eastern time. Lynn thought the balcony thing is set for like around 1pm UK time and the wedding is at 11am.
That's right Rico wedding is at 11am though I would set it fir an hour earlier for all the build up. Not sure what time the old kissing on the balcony thing will be. ;)
It looks like the wedding starts at 11am and the balcony (and RAF fly past)
will be about 1:25pm - (6am and 8:25am for you).
I think this should give you all the detail you could possibly need:

Thanks guys. Think I'll set the TIVO to record for many hours prior and after - just to be sure.
A lot of the news channels are starting live coverage at 4am! That is crazy! The wife said she is getting up. But she didn't get up today till almost 10. And I'll be honest I do want to catch the wedding itself I just don't need to start watching at 4am!!!!! I wish Will and Kate many years of happiness!
Don't take this the wrong way but...
Isn't the whole fourth of July thing about throwing off all these trappings of British sovereignty? I'm sure we had a small disagreement of some sort on the subject? Or a war? ;)
That was a while ago. Forgive and forget. :biggrin
And also the wife got up at 3am to set up the dvr to tape the wedding and to watch it at the same time. But that works out for me, even though I got woke up I can wait and watch it later.

American's feel a tremendous amount of kinship towards the British. We find the pomp and circumstance surrounding the concept of the Monarchy enchanting and a reminder that what can sometimes make America unique and special, being a melting pot, also has it's drawbacks as we have no real center for our society. If we aren't at war, we are a pretty divisive bunch. It's very attractive to watch the sense of "people" the Brits have when it comes to the Monarchy.

True enough - but my Grandmother came from your side. It has been the UK & Commonwealth and the US that have 'had each others backs'. That 'special relationship' will live on.
..and it wasn't the monarachy per se, it was no taxation without representation. :)

More like our rich didn't want to pay the lowest tax rates in the Kingdom and they wanted to move west and kill the natives for land which the Crown had told them they couldn't do, but that line does make things seem a little less terrorist.
Ok guys - PLEASE, don't turn this thread political. With everything going on in the world today, I just find it nice to have a nice, big wedding event to talk about.
Congrats to the happy couple!
Political?! Historical, maybe...And I was just responding to Mike's legitmate and interesting question. And yes, congrats to them both, she looks absolutely lovely!
I would never say I was a particularly strong monarchist...but I've just spent the morning in front of the TV coverage :)

Come clean Brother Feathers! Did you sing along with 'Jerusalem'? ((I know I got a bit misty eyed)).
I should have put smiles on my post. I wasn't trying to be political, but I recently saw "The History of Us" and learned a lot of wierd facts about America. I also agree with Bryan about the pomp and circumstance.
Who doesn't get a bit of a kick out of a big over the top state wedding :)
I wasn't asking questions from political motivations either - we just generally have no idea about the history of the US/UK relationship over here.
If I'm honest, I really enjoyed this morning and I didn't necessarily expect to but it was so well planned and covered by the BBC.
Ok, I'll admit that this all seemed kind of...well, "SO WHAT?!" to me. I've never really been in to these public spectacles before. Woke up this morning and of course, the ONLY thing on local news stations was coverage of the wedding...and I found myself WATCHING! I really did get kind of a "warm fuzzy" feeling thinking about how awesome it looked and how the British people seemed to just LOVE the Royals. And (at least it seemed) the Royals really care about the people. And I thought, you'd NEVER see this kind of thing here in the U.S. If the Presidents daughter or son got married, people here would be like...so? Big deal. I've said this to many before, and Meds knows well how I feel, but I love the UK. Never been there but still. If it were possible, Joyce and I would relocate in a heart beat! :) Rock on Willy and Katie!!
Lynn and I visited London and the surrounding area before and loved it. I actually have a friend that I used to write actual letters to (a pen pal) who works for the BBC. That reminds me, I owe her an email. Anyway, loved what I had time to watch this morning. And Lynn and I will be watching the TIVO of it tonight. I love weddings and this one looked like it was awesome! Again, congrats and may they have a long and happy life together!
If Rico considers that a debate....I worry what he thinks when we actually get into a debate, does he consider it a brawl? ;)
On a more serious note, good luck to the Happy couple. :)
King
I also have been to London twice and have traveled up north to Liverpool as well. It's really a beautiful country and I love the people. The weather, however, is shite and I'll take New Zealand or Australia over the UK. :)
Well the television was on from 10am this morning as the wife was glued, my daughter watched to see the dress and I just watched. It made me proud to be English. I thought the crowd was fantastic, very well behaved. When they opened the mall( that's a street not a shopping centre), the crowd filed forward to the palace in a very orderly fashion. No pushing or shoving and yes she looked stunning.
One final thing we do get sun over here you know. It's a bit of a myth that it rains all the time here. In fact I am pretty sure I saw the sun for three whole weeks last year. :D
I do think the little touches like the Aston trip to Clarence House and the supposedly impromptu visit to the crowds last night have done them a load of good in public opinion. The claim for this event is that so much of the detail was down the couple and if this is the case then the monarchy with thrive in two generations time.
Only one thing has suffered as a result of today and that's the republican cause in the UK.

I think the BBC was using the hat for signal boosting in the walls of the abbey....
Just as long as she does not show up at our wedding today - let her wear what she wants.

If you believe Wiki, they get married in July (and strictly she could have been a princess, of course, but Princess Anne decided to keep her children free of titles etc.)
