Fox's 'Rise of the Apes' Now Retitled 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes'

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Briefly: Make what you will of this, but it is just a title. SlashFilm via CBM has confirmed with 20th Century Fox that Rupert Wyatt's new Rise of the Apes prequel/reboot, starring James Franco, will now be officially titled Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It's not hard to see that Fox is having trouble figuring out how to market this, originally moving the release in November, then pulling it back to August 5th. Now this change is just a way to get the original Rise of the Apes name somewhere directly in the title, without calling it Rise of the Apes. Oh whatever, I just want to see a trailer, I'm actually still pretty damn excited to see this.
Rise of the Apes is set in contemporary San Francisco and follows a young scientist who becomes a crucial figure in the war between humans and apes. Franco has been testing his Alzheimer cure on apes, but one of them, named Caesar, starts to evolve rapidly, so he takes him home to live with him and protect him from the "cruel doctors," thus starting the inevitable ape revolution. James Franco stars, along with Andy Serkis providing motion capture for Caesar and Weta doing CGI, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox and Tom Felton. Word is that we'll finally see a teaser trailer next week, by April 15th, so keep an eye out for that, too!

I knew we discussed a remake somewhere.. Thanks Rico
So this is a prequel based on the Original Ape movies since the "rise" occurs on Earth?
Haven't they made this story already? I seem to remember a similar plot.
Get your hands on a new story - you damned dirty writers!
:)
Yes but the original benefited from having Ricardo Montalban!
That's right, I've seen it.
I believe David Hewlett (SG-1, SG-A and now SGU) is supposed to have a role in this somewhere. I don't know what as though.
Looks like a lot of stuff will be released this week on this film. There is a VERY short little bit of footage at the link below showing some of WETA's work on the ape look for this. Check it out.

Very cool! The facial expressions on the human like chimp look amazing. The gorilla's running amok look a little dodgy, though.
Wow.. intense.. looking forward to this one.
James Franco as a high tech scientist guy is more of a stretch for me to buy into than apes becoming super intelligent. ;)

Good one! Almost like Kim Richards being a Nobel prize winning scientist... :)
I didn't think there was much of a chance of this movie working....but this trailer looks impressive!
Wow that trailer does look good. I like the premise to the story too.
I really love all things APE! Can't wait!
I'm going APE to watch this movie! ;)
quit MONKEYING around Dan.
They have to be 'bananas' to take this project on..
All these poor simian puns are making me lose my APEtite!!
You just had to chimp in didn't you?
I wonder if the Monkees will do the music?

You guys have me hanging from the trees!
And we are just getting into the swing of it!
oh, this conversation belongs in the zoo.
Wow.. you are all full of bad puns this morning.. :)

Let's get back to the PRIMATEly topic here..
How many movies is James Franco in! I do think this looks interesting.

LOL! There is a new rule in Hollywood, any movie needs to contain at least one of the following: James Franco, Natalie Portman, Sam Jackson, Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, or robots/aliens. You get bonus points if you have more than one of the above!
I don't think you can have enough Natalie Portman! :)
Good one, Rico! And I do agree with Billybob but I can't bring myself to watch her most recent one that also has JAMES FRANCO in it!
I can't wait for this. I was a huge Apes fan when I was a kid. I remember I had a record album/comic book adaptation of each of the first four films, that I read and listened to probably 500 times. I even didn't absolutely hate the Burton reboot, although I think Mark Wahlberg is the worst actor working today in mainstream cinema. To me this looks awesome.
Joby, I agree! I'm a huge Apes fan myself, even (sort of ) liked the reboot with Mark Wahlberg a few years back, though, it could have been much better. From what I've seen, this looks ROCKIN'!
I remember when I was a wee little one, maybe 12-13 years old, a local theater had an Apes marathon - all the movies back to back for one admission. My dad and I sat through HOURS of talking Apes! Awesome!!
Me too. I loved the movies as a kid, they were on TV a lot in the New York City metro TV market as Saturday and Sunday afternoon movies all through the '70's. I was General Urko for Haloween once or twice. :)
It's funny, but some of the earliest movies I recall seeing in the theater were the apes films. Don't think I saw the first two that way, but from 3 on I did. Hope this new one is good. I didn't care much for the Wahlberg one from a few years back.
I didn't mind the remake, Tim Roth was terrific.
I loved the controversy over the ending of the remake. It was rather incomprehensible. I guess you weren't meant to think about it too carefully. It just so much paled in comparison to the timeless, seminal ending of the original film.
I love the Apes stuff, and as you have seen in my video entries to the podcast, I really enjoyed the Tim Burton remake. I am so looking forward to this new idea. WOO HOO! IN fact HBO had a free weekend not too long ago and I taped all the Ape movies in HD, making my way through them for the billionth time!
Yeah the Burton one was enjoyable and completely set things up for a sequel that never came.
yeah, the ending had me scratching my head, pardon the pun.
Saw the trailer, looks pretty darn good! Can't wait.
Joby, a friend from work just gave me one of those comic/record sets of "The Planet of the Apes." I don't know if they are worth anything but he just gave it to me!
Here's the full trailer.. looks pretty epic.. I'm liking the story.

Wow thats so cool! Sorry I missed this message, not sure why it didn't pop up in my threads. I'd love to see pics or a scan if you have the ability. I havent seen that since I was like eight years old
Looks like it will be a cool flick. I'm guessing the Chimp they featured in the trailer is Caesar?

Maybe not until the very end, that would be a great was to set up a sequel. @ Eric, yes, they said in the trailer that was Caeser.

Yeah; I didn't catch it at first, but I just saw a version of the trailer at the movies, and they were dropping his name like a hot potato . :)
I think it will be an awesome movie. The effects look great, and the story looks like it will be a tense nail-bitter; more a horror story than a sci-fi story. I wonder if there will be any surprises for us, or if it will be more an exploration of what we know is going to happen.
THE APES WIN!
Saw the latest preview. So all of the sudden there are 10,000+ apes just running around naked??
:)
I saw the trailer today at the theater and was very pleased. I can't wait to see it now.

I agree with Bryan, talking doesn't seem to be the biggest thing on the plate. Looks cool though.

well in the interests of i cannot see everythng that is coming out his year, this one is a DVD for me.Way to many other things i want to see this year as it is.
I think Ceasar will talk in the 2nd half of the movie then a few more will towards the end. Thats my prediction. Joby check out these pics...
Heres another one.
LOL! Don't do this to me! :banned: or this :old_bash:
That does look good.
Family Guy- Dirty stinkin apes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hljY5jvPj4c#)
Awesome, boy does that bring back memories. Thanks for taking the time to do that.
Dr. Susan McCallister Tell me Mr. Franklin, have you ever known anyone with Alzheimer's?
Russell Franklin: Well, no.
Dr. Susan McCallister: By the end all my father could do was ask why my mother wasn't at home, and each time I told him she was dead I had to watch him take that loss like a car wreck. 200,000 men and women develop Alzheimer's each year! What if you could end all that suffering with a single pill? Give me till Monday morning, 48 hours. I'll give you results that'll skyrocket your stock price or I'll help you pack the lab myself. It's your call.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes - 2011?
- no
Deep Blue Sea - 1999
Featuring super smart CGI Sharks!
- uh oh
There are definite similarities, but I wouldn't get worried yet. Deep Blue Sea was sort of a "one-off", while the Apes film has a huge built-in fan base. I think the producers of Apes will feel a lot more pressure to get it right. :)
No Problem, Joby. Sorry for the spoiler. ;D
Love that Family Guy bit!

I remember watching Planet of the Apes in it's fist airing on network TV back in the early 70's and have been hooked ever since. I even remember watching the TV series. (Short lived as it was).
I trick or Treated for several years with my planet of the apes mask.
I personally thought the Burton remake of fair, but I didn't really think it came close to capturing the greatness of the original.
I hope we get more than just a little ape talk, since talking apes is one of the elements that makes POTA great. The trailers do look amazing though.
I love the Simpson's spoof of the apes. (Singing apes) is classic.
Hey Rico, will we get a Planet of the Apes podcast sometime?
An Apes podcast is a good idea. I'll try and work one in sometime maybe over the summer.
Looking forward to this
Just got back from this movie. WOW. I really enjoyed it. Such a fresh and unique take on it. The story was solid, the acting was amazing, and the CGI will knock you over. It was so well done you don't even realize the apes aren't real from the get go. I was kind of worried it would be cheesy, but honestly, it was not. You care about the characters, and this time around it all makes WAY more sense. This is a must see for any animal lover or original Apes fan. I really enjoyed a few nods to the original movie. Prett darn cool.
ANYWAY- Go see this on the big screen. VERY COOL.
Thanks for the review Rick! You're preaching to the choir, I'll be seeing it this weekend!
Yeah, I think the previews for this have been very compelling from a story standpoint and terrific visually. Going to make the effort to see this one, more so then Cowboys and Aliens which I am hearing from friends not such good things about. Too bad.

Yeah, sorry Tim, I'm going with my folks on this.
Think it is ok for a 10 year old to see?
It is pretty dark, a few very intense moments and there is blood. It depends on what the ten year old is used too. There were some little kids in the theater.. but not many.
Wow, that was...epic. I was blown away and I have seen a number of the original films too....just. WOW. Recommend!
Btw, who caught the BIG easter egg that was not a line in this film?
I'm waiting for my wife to get back from her vacation with my dad, stepmom, sister in law, & neice to go see this. I think it will be a ggod one. If this would have been the Conan weekend she wouldn't have cared if I'd seen it.
Just saw this movie tonight. Really enjoyed it and thought it was very well done. They kept it serious and did a very good job of making you really care about Caesar and especially his relationship with Will, the James Franco scientist character. And I barely recognized Draco Malfoy in the role he had in this movie. I had a few tiny things I didn't care for, but overall it's really good. The apes CGI stuff is just great. If you enjoy the Apes movies and ideas, go see this one.
Which bits didn't you care for?
Should be a great movie if the lead character is named Will! Plan to see this this weekend. Might catch not only with my wife but maybe my brother too.

I have a hard time with cruelty to animals. I think I've mentioned before but I was almost going to be a Vet. So any movie that has that kind of stuff in it gets to me a little. I also find sometimes it's a bit cliche in the way they portray some people who work in labs and places that deal with animals. But, most of that is just my personal feelings.

Yeah I see what you mean about cliche. They definitely pushed the animal cruelty aspect to get us to sympathise with the apes and it worked.
Major Spoilers!!!
I felt like the movie kicked off in a good direction but was getting lost as it went on. Everyone with the exception of Will, Charles and Caroline became a heel and to our group of movie goers, we really didn't a clear outcome to root for, even though we know what it is setting up. Can we really root for that? I felt disappointed they didn't have apes jumping out of unexpected places in classic horror movie fashion. And there wasn't that shocker ending some of the other movies had. I probably will not watch this one again.
(I don't want to be critical of movies, I want them to make better movies
On a side note, the trailer they showed for Paranormal Activity 3 looks promising.
A little quiz to see how well you know your Planet of the Apes franchise. Each POTA has had a subtext theme built into the plots here is a quiz to see if you can align the subtext with the name of the movie. Unfortunately I can't really provide a prize to the first winner (unless you want a Vartok segment emailed, LOL).
Here are the movies in order:
1968 Planet of the Apes
1970 Beneath the Planet of the Apes
1971 Escape from the Planet of the Apes
1972 Conquest of the Planet of the Apes
1973 Battle for the Planet of the Apes
2001 Planet of the Apes
2011 Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Put the letters in order
a. women's rights
b. race relations
c. animal rights
d. can't we all just get along?
e. anti-war, anti-nuclear weapons
f. equal rights
g. human rights
First to do so will be declared most likely to replace Charlton Heston to claim "Get your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape."
V
Seems like some overlap in some of those themes showing up in multiple Apes movies.
I went to see this yesterday with the wife, mom, my brother Carl, and his son Zach with his girlfriend. Of course my 17 year old nephew and his girlfriend didn't want to sit with us adults. I thought it was a great movie. I rate it a strong 9. I thought the story though maybe not exciting at the beginning kept you interested and of course it just got better and better as it went along. The CGI was awesome and Ceasar was fantastic. I also really liked James Franco's character, Will. And it had been a long time since I saw John Lithgow in a movie. I always thought he was a really good actor.
The fight scenes on the bridge was really good and I liked the part where Ceasar was directing the "battle" plan. I was also sad to see the ape (Buck??) get killed on the bridge. I guess I was rootin' for the apes. And of course when Ceasar spoke that was really cool.
I'm heading out to see it shortly. :)
That was a great movie! :metallica:
Finally had a chance to see this on Saturday. It was good but not what I expected.
From the previews I though the first half of the film would focus more in the lab and the development of Ceasar and experimenting with other apes, where the tension would sort of build into a climax where the apes in the lab get organized and rebel against their human handlers. Instead I was surprised by the whole story taking place over many years and a lot of it at the home with the Dad. And then the whole middle part at that odd ape zoo they sent Ceasar to. I felt like the other apes already seemed too intelligent even prior to Ceasar gassing them. And then after the big zoo escape, there were suddenly hundreds of them! WTF? Where did all the apes come from and how were they so organized and smart? The movie really pushed us to except a bit too much and ended up failing, IMO. I very much enjoyed the little nods to the original films, the missing astronaut and plague which dovetail great into the original film. All in all, it was fun, the CGI was hit or miss but Andy Skerkis was great as Ceasar.
Definitely seems I liked it more than you Bryan. I really fell for the relationship between Caesar, Will and his father. To answer one question...
Many of the extra apes come after they swing by the zoo and gather more. Although there still seemed like a lot more than there should be.
I did enjoy that aspect of the story, it was touching but it was just very different from what I expected and changed the pacing a lot. I still think I would have preferred the movie I had in my head then the one I saw. And yeah, the end numbers of apes just didn't make sense nor the organization.
You must have seen some different previews or not the ones I saw. In some of the previews they show Caesar as a baby with Will's dad, and then older, etc. It looked to me as he was growing up he was learning and getting smarter. The movie was pretty much what I had expected.
I suppose. At the end of the day it just wasn't as good as I had hoped. I felt the same way about Captain America. Maybe I should go see Cowboys and Aliens after all...
If you like Westerns, definitely go see "Cowboys & Aliens." I really liked "Captain America" a lot - but I'm also a big comic book fan (and western fan too).
Captain America was my favorite of the Summer and Rise of the Planet of the Apes is probably 3rd or 4th. I also really enjoyed Thor and Super 8.
And I did notice that there were an awful lot of Apes for one building and a zoo. Must be a big Zoo in San Francisco. To be honest I never really thought about all the apes till you started talking about it on here. Great movie that will be a Blu-ray buy. And since the wife said she wanted it on blu-ray first, I can pick out another one from my list!
Finally got a chance to see this one and really enjoyed it. I guess no sequel, prequel, or remake could ever do justice to the classic original film, but I think they did a really good job with this one. The last 30 minutes were just absolutely epic and the digital effects were simply mind blowing. I hope they don't try to make this into a new franchise though...I think they had a hard enough time coming up with an ending to this one that would satisfy audiences. I agree with whoever said earlier in this post how hard it would be to end this film in a satisfying way knowing what is bound to come in the near future.

I am not sure if Pee-wee or the monkey-child is freaking me out more... ;)
Indeed that freaked me out when I saw it, had to share. The pee wee pic reminded me of Bryan's avatar so I had to change
Finally got around to watching this and thoroughly enjoyed it. John Lithgow gave a beautiful, nuanced performance and James Franco was much better than I suspected he might be. I really wish I'd seen this on a big screen, the first time I've felt this since I've started catching up with the movies I've missed in recent years. It's not original, by a long stretch, it has some story holes, but it's one enjoyable romp, well executed and the CGI is stunning.
On an aside, it was also nice to see Tyler Labine in something, I was really annoyed when Reaper was axed before it's time was up.
4/5
I loved this movie too. I think I need it on Blu Ray. ;) GREAT STUFF!
It's a great Bluray, lots of extras stuff with Andy Serkis and his performance.
I've been wanting to get this on Blu-Ray but it's one of those titles that I think will be $9.99 around Christmas so I'm going to wait.
