Howard Out, Cheadle In On "Iron Man 2"
By Garth FranklinTuesday, October 14th 2008 8:12am

Don Cheadle will replace Terrence Howard in Marvel Studios' "Iron Man" sequel says The Hollywood Reporter.

Howard played Colonel James 'Rhodey' Rhodes, Tony Stark's best friend in the first feature. Negotiations with Howard apparently fell through over financial differences amongst other reasons.

Marvel decided to take the role in another direction and approached Cheadle. Rhodes is expected to gestate into the armor-clad hero War Machine either in this film or the next.

Justin Theroux is penning the screenplay, Jon Favreau is returning as director and Robert Downey Jr. is set for Tony Stark. Gwyneth Paltrow is also expected to return.

Heard about this too.  Not official yet.  I hope it's not true and just a negotiating ploy.

I tend to believe the Hollywood Reporter..

Don Cheadle joins 'Iron Man 2'
He'll replace Terrence Howard in Marvel Studios' sequel
By Borys Kit

Oct 14, 2008, 01:00 AM ET

Don Cheadle is stepping in to replace Terrence Howard in "Iron Man 2," Marvel Studios' sequel to its summer blockbuster.

In the movie, Howard played Jim Rhodes, Tony Stark/Iron Man's best friend and future armor-clad hero War Machine. One scene featured Howard looking at a silver suit of armor and saying "Next time," a line that caused great delight for fans.

But there will be no next time for Howard.

Marvel had no comment, but sources close to the deal said negotiations with Howard fell through over financial differences, among other reasons. Marvel, which had wanted to work with Cheadle, then decided to take the role in another direction and approached the actor, who is shooting Antoine Fuqua's "Brooklyn's Finest" with Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke.

Rhodes is expected to play a larger part in the sequel, which is rumored to go beyond high-tech villains. Justin Theroux is writing the screenplay.

Jon Favreau is returning as director, and Robert Downey Jr. is expected back as billionaire industrialist Stark/Iron Man. Gwyneth Paltrow also is expected to be back as Stark's assistant, Pepper Potts.

Cheadle, repped by UTA, most recently starred in "Traitor," a thriller on which he was also a producer. He will next be seen in DreamWorks' "Hotel for Dogs."

I am OK with it.  Don Cheadle is a great actor so I think he will do well and have fun with the role.

This is pretty big news...

Downey, Favreau sign on for "Avengers" at Marvel
Wednesday October 29 2:47 PM ET

"Iron Man" duo Robert Downey Jr. and director Jon Favreau will reunite for "The Avengers," Marvel Studios' film about its team of superheroes.

Don Cheadle, whose deal to replace Terrence Howard in the "Iron Man" movies has been finalized, also has signed to perform in the action movie. It is set for release in 2011.

Downey has signed a four-picture deal with Marvel Studios, which will see him reprise the character of Tony Stark not only for "Iron Man 2" and "Iron Man 3," but also for the "Avengers" movie. (The deal retroactively includes the first "Iron Man," which grossed $580 million at the worldwide box office this year.)

Favreau, who is directing "Iron Man 2," will executive produce "Avengers." Cheadle will play Jim Rhodes, Stark's best friend, who becomes the suit-wearing hero "War Machine."

Marvel's current slate is designed to introduce superhero characters via individual movies that lead up to the characters teaming up for "Avengers."

Downey and Cheadle are the first stars to sign for "Avengers," whose roster of superheroes includes Iron Man, Captain American, Hulk, Wasp, Giant Man, Hawkeye and Thor.

Edward Norton portrayed Bruce Banner/Hulk in "Hulk" this year, but the actor clashed with the studio over the movie's cut. It is unclear whether he will return.

More On "Iron Man 2" Casting Change
By Garth FranklinMonday, November 3rd 2008 12:26am

When it was announced that Don Cheadle would take over Terrence Howard's in the upcoming "Iron Man" sequel, many knew that something was fishy behind the scenes. Now, Entertainment Weekly has released a detailed story explaining what happened and it makes for an interesting read.

Some label the change due to Howard's difficult behavior on the set of the first "Iron Man", Favreau and co. apparently cut and reshoot many of his scenes during production.

Others say the situation is most likely a matter of finances. Howard was the first actor signed to the film and the highest paid - and so when the film came together it was too late to renegotiate his deal.

So when Favreau and scribe Justin Theroux sat down to flesh out the sequel, the Rhodes character has been minimized and so the studio went to the actor's agents with a new, drastically reduced offer.

Sounds harsh? Well apparently the offer was similar to what supporting cast members were paid for the first movie, but was an estimated 50-80 percent pay cut from Howard's paycheck for the first film.

Iron Man 2 to Come at You in 3D?
Source:Ain't It Cool News
September 2, 2009

Ain't It Cool News is reporting the rumor that Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios are considering releasing Iron Man 2 in 3D format, and possibly the first Iron Man as well. Here's an except from the article:

Right now, there is a 1 minute demo of IRON MAN 2 converted to high quality digital 3D. I'm told this one minute is totally like Kim Basinger & Mickey Rourke in 9 1/2 WEEKS. HOT! Crazy Hot! Right now the Suits at Marvel & Paramount & now also Disney are considering this 1 minute.

At the same time that this is happening, they are fishing for bids with 3 different companies to see what the cost and time it would take to convert IRON MAN 2 to a complete 3D film. This same process is being done to Tim Burton's ALICE IN WONDERLAND - but if this comes to pass. What will this mean for the rest of Marvel's slate leading to THE AVENGERS? Will THOR & CAPTAIN AMERICA also go through this process? Or will they be shot from the get go in 3D.

Looks fun and I will probably go see this in the theater. However, the plot does not look all that different from the first film. I was hoping for something a little bolder instead it looks like they are playing safe by staying with the formula that worked the first time.

What do you see that's the same? From what I hear, it's pretty bold with some of what they are doing character wise.

Well, two things come immediately to mind but I would have to watch the trailer again to tell more.

1. Tony Starks as a superstar pop figure. In the first film he was that way before his encounter with the terrorists. I guess that event didn't change his personality.

2. Another enemy who just happens to make a device similar to his and so consequently he battles his own technology again.

I agree with #2.  I am not happy they decided to use the badguy from the first movie and "remake" him.  Kinda lame, but I'll still go to see the movie.

To address your questions:

1) If you are rich and famous and reveal that you are also wearing power armor, wouldn't it be more of a stretch if the media wasn't interested in your story?

2) While it does seem that the bad guy might use the same power source for their technology, the whips are not something that we've seen in the Stark Arsenal. That being said, it was also stated that the power source is a really impressive bit of technology. Wouldn't others try to replicate the construction and use it in their own devices? Sort of like they did with the Hemi and the V8? Or even the nukes? When someone creates world changing technology, there is always someone else out there trying to copy it.

While I grant you that there are some simularities, the ones that you mentioned are superficial at best. He's true to the character that he was in the last movie and part of the plot involves tech that people would have been after.

Being that this is a sequel, I'd want him to be the same guy that I liked in the first movie. If he's going to change, I'd like to see that one screen.

I really don't see what the problem with 3D is. It's not as if they are requiring you to see it in 3D. It's simply another option like DTS or THX. Another thing it offers is a way to see the movie this is not common to the average home theater system. You don't have to see it in 3D. You don't even have to see it at a cinema, but they would be fools not to put movies in a way that can still be unique to the theater experience.

Seems like a good solution to me for the drop in tickets that are partly due to people wanting to watch it on their home systems because they feel the experience can be mimicked there.

With regards to the 3-D comments (which seem to be creeping into every big new movie discussion), I do feel they are trying to force it on us.  For example, the theater I go to much of the time (a very nice one and voted the best in the area many years running) has only a certain number of theaters.  When a 3-D film pops up, (like the recent "Alice") showing it in some theaters in 3-D limits your options (times) in seeing it in 2-D.  It also greatly limits the number of movies one theater can show if every 3-D film that comes out requires double the theaters to show it.  I don't like having to pay $2.50 more per ticket for 3-D (which I feel is excessive).  Most of these films have not been filmed with 3-D cameras, it's been "computerized" into 3-D.  I don't feel it really adds much to the movie going experience.  Again, I maintain a good movie is still a good movie - period.  I don't need little things floating at me to prove it, or get me into the theaters.  I think this spring and summer crop of movies are going to make studios realize this even more.

Yup agree Rico. With Avatar Fair enough because it is filmed with new tech, just adding  a few scenes and saying hey look it's 3D is insulting. What next Ghandi in 3D, wow look at his flip flops flapping in my face.

I am very excited to see Ironman II and will likely make the effort to see it in 3D. I could care less how many screens it takes up from other movies, I go to the movies a few times per year and want it to be as fun an experience as possible. So the extra money is meaningless and the I like to see somthing I can't at home, so bring on 3D. I can tell you from the stanpoint of marketing, I am the person they are targeting with this, the much more casual movie go'er who they want in the theaters more often. 3D works great in that regard regardless if it's just an add on.

..oh, and I want it in IMAX, too.

Yep. This is where we agree Bryan. If they were trying to force it on people, they wouldn't release 2D at all. Movie houses work off supply and demand. If more people are going to the 2D, it will show in more houses. I think more people want 3D and to see it in a way that they can't get from watching it at home.

I took my 5 year old to see Dragons last weekend in 3D. It was 27 bucks for two tickets and it was worth it. We had a great time and try to do two movies a month for daddy daughter day. 3D made this experience better for her and she has been telling everyone about the fun she had.

For me, the 3D experience offers a bit more than the 2D one and is worth the value.

It's also something that can't be uploaded and cam copied to the internet hours after being released. That only makes good businesses sense. If 2D movies aren't making what they should because of other factors, why not provide a way that can't be duplicated to the web and convinces people who would have otherwise waited for the DVD to buy a ticket?

I have to respectfully disagree with you Rico about the Studios. They aren't going to stop with 3D when it is something that's bringing them cash while reducing the losses created by pirating.

The only part I don't agree with Bryan on is IMAX.

I have rules to seeing movies that IMAX violates except for nature movies.

For me the ideal location to sit is in the center of a row where eye level is equal to the center level of the screen (usually the middle of the theater. This location provides optimal viewing of the whole screen without needing to turn the head. It also puts you in the acoustic center of the surround sound system for optimal audio immersion. By taking those seats, the likely hood of people having to cross into your LOS becomes reduced and you avoid many children who's parents keep them near the aisles for possible bathroom and snack emergencies.

That being said, I remember when people were complaining about the cost of tickets when stadium seats were being retro fitted into some houses and built into newer ones. I don't watch movies if I can't have stadium seating. I think 3D is a great feature that will do the same. Sure you can still see stuff in a 2D house without stadium seats.

But would you want to? Why not just wait for the DVD and see it at home in the home system that you invested thousands into?

The latest entry in this fad.  This Saturday eMagine theatre will be showing the NCAA semifinals in 3D!!  They are charging $25.   People will show up because MSU is playing but this is getting ridiculous.

Hmmm, 3-D basketball?  Now, that I'd like to see.  ;)

I was thinking about seeing the superbowl in 3D and how I'd love that and would being willing to part with 25 a ticket for it.

x3, that sounds cool!

To steer us back to the Ironman 2 talk, I hope Black Widow (Scarlett's) part is bigger than the previews make it look.  I want to see more of her than Mickey Rourke.  ;)

Well, I guess not many of you have seen this yet.  Just saw it finally myself this evening.  I won't spoil anything but just say if you liked the first one I think you will enjoy this one too.  Some cool moments and Robert Downey Jr. is just a lot of fun to watch.  So go see it in the theaters in glorious 2-D!   :ironman

It was an average comic book movie. The scenes with Jackson seemed forced/inserted. I could have done with out the Avengers stuff totally. It's not that I don't like the Avengers, it just seemed a bit forced. I love Mickey Rourke in this movie so much that I thought they did not use him enough. I also did not get too many of the laugh out loud moments that I did from the first movie.

The movie is right up there with the 2nd X-Men movie for me. It's a fun movie to watch but not as good as the first one. It's worth the price of the ticket.

Favreau Departs "Iron Man" Franchise
By Garth Franklin Wednesday December 15th 2010 08:50AM

It's nice when a potentially long and drawn out story contains itself quite neatly all in the space of a few hours.

Yesterday a report emerged at Vulture that "Iron Man" and "Iron Man 2" director Jon Favreau had ditched plans to direct the third one in the series.

The report speculates that Favreau's price for the gig might be too high for the now very budget conscious Marvel Studios, and their delays on making decisions and desire to put more of their own superheroes into the third film are a deliberate tactic to force Favreau to depart the project.

Within a few hours, Favreau confirmed the news of his departure on Twitter saying "It's true, I'm directing Magic Kingdom, not Iron Man 3. I've had a great run with Marvel and wish them the best."

Shortly after that, Favreau gave an interview to The Los Angeles Times, saying his departure "is no snap decision or the result of fractured relations". The main reason was to "find something that lights a fire" inside of him as a filmmaker which a sequel with a lot of built-in expectations wouldn't afford him. He added that he Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige remain close, Feige himself has been an informal sounding board for "Magic Kingdom" ideas, and Favreay will stay on as a producer on "The Avengers."

In a formal sounding statement, Favreau says "I am happy that I had the opportunity to establish the world that these characters can now play in.... 'Iron Man' has given me tremendous opportunities and Kevin and I are enjoying a lot of momentum in our careers thanks to the 'Iron Man' films. I look forward to seeing what others can do playing in the same world."
