Title: Twitter - community blog - sort of
Post by: Rico on February 19, 2007, 12:14:52 PM
Has anyone ever tried Twitter?  It's this sort of blogging site with your friends.  You basically post what you are up to during the day, night ,etc.  Kind of a neat idea, but I'm trying to decide if I need another web distraction right now.  Check it out and my profile here if you want:

Yeah it looks cool but I already have a blog space and like you said Rico I don't think I have the time to update another thing.. between my website, blog and this forum.. doesn't leave much free time.

It looks interesting.

I have a vox account, which is along the same lines but I do not have the time to put into vox right now along with everything else going on in my life.

I've always been a livejournal fan myself.
I use it in conjunction with my own blog/website (powered by Wordpress) so that when I post there it gets automatically cross posted to my LJ.

Twitter is becoming more and more fun!  I find it helps kind of make me organize my day a bit too.  Check it out - if you haven't already.

Hey Rico! How does this thing work exactly? Is it like a blog? I've been reading about it all over the internets but I can't figure oout how it works.  I think I'll register and see.

All it is basically is a rolling public blog.  Everyone that signs up (for free) can post little snippets about what they are up to during their day.  Kind of a quick way to stay in touch, etc.  It's kind of cool and fun.  Several big shots are on it too - from the Tech area, some politicians, web folks, etc.  You can add friends that you follow and it will update and show you just their posts or you can watch the overall public timeline that shows everyone's posts.  Check it out sometime and be sure to post your user id here so I can add you as a friend.

I'm on Twitter and have great fun randomly updating with whatever happens to be on my mind at the time :) - http://twitter.com/celestialteapot. A somewhat more useful site is FriendFeed which not only updates your twitter but you can sync it with your blog entries and it'll inform people (other users of FF) when you've updated. Fun for sharing random links as well.

I haven't signed up for Twitter yet... But I have noticed that several of our Anomaly web site visitors are coming from Twitter. I assumed someone was "Twitting" about us and our visitors are clicking on a link that person provided that takes folks to our web site. Any of you Twitting about Anomaly?  I think I may sign up... sounds like fun.  :)

They normally have an ulterior motive, like trying to sell you something. I had a really attractive woman who wanted to follow me, and seeing as really attractive women NEVER want to follow me, I knew something was up. Ha Ha, it gave me great pleasure in clicking "remove". That taught her that did.  ;D

No.. they were candidate updates... like my Obama one.. tells me where he is and what he is doing everyday. Since I am nether a McCain or Palin fan I don't care what they are doing daily.

Twitter is just for fun.. it's a live bloging program. You can blog up to 140 characters per post.. so it's normally a real quick "what's going on in my life moment"  It's just a way to keep your friends and family updated on your daily activities.

It can also help out if you have any questions that like minded geeks might be able to answer. I had a twitter conversation with one of my friends who was buying a mobile phone. He put a shout out for suggested smart phones, and between all of us, we steered him to the right one for him through experiences we had all had. It really can be more than just about following your buddies. I follow the Mars Phoenix and you get updates a good day before they hit the news.

Twitter Engineering and Operations are on the case but if you receive a Direct Message with a blogspot.com link in it that redirects to what seems like Twitter.com do not enter your Twitter credentials. Sometimes Twitter members use tags to look for people the think they would want to follow. If you used a word that he used as a tag, it's possible that is why he is now following you. That happened to me a few times. In fact, Owen Lars started following me...LOL. Guess I mentioned Star Wars too many times.  I usually read their Tweets and if they aren't a salesman or a corporation I keep them. But I don't have nearly the number of people following me that Kenny has.

LOL, could be a Spanish name, pronounced "Heysuse"... It does mean Jesus, but it's a Hispanic cultural thing. But I guess it depends on the Twitter posts. Has he Tweeted the Golden Rule (love one another as I have loved you)? ;)

Wow... I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, Kenny. I just read a few posts and they seem okay, but I obviously haven't read them all...As a believer I would feel strange if I had to "block Jesus", because the dude pretending to be him says something that isn't at all accurate. I wish people wouldn't do that...it's sort of creepy.  :)

Yep; the iPhone's browser ability is one of my favorite features.  The only drawback is the size of the keyboard, and the built-in spell-check feature.  Sometimes, typing fast can lead to some embarrassing spelling bloopers. :)

Here is a really cool website for all you Twitter stat fans.
http://tweetstats.com/ (http://tweetstats.com/)

I can't find any way to post the results on this forum but:
I tweet an average of 5 tweets a a day
Thursday is my busiest tweet day
I tweet most at around 1pm
35% of my tweets are @ replies
And 601 of my 1012 tweets have come from the mobile web.

This site is quite addictive really and does give other stats. Enjoy

I was making 6.8 Tweets a day. I cut back so I wouldn't get in trouble at work.
Looks like I tweeted 8 am-4 pm but Friday was the most popular. Probably because I'm in a good mood at that point. It looks like I reply the most to Billybob and Kenny. :D

I'm only making 3.2 tweets per day? How is that possible? I thought I was tweeting non-stop. Oh well... it's good to know that it's not as excessive as I thought it was. ;)

It's probably a good thing Meds. I pretty much only update from my phone as I don't have access to a computer for being out on the streets all day and I always have to take time out during work to update my Twitter and Facbook, much to the confusion and amusement of my work colleagues. : )

Sony Ericsson w890i I hate the thing. It looks god, it feels good but if i go on the internet and say download a page to a folder on my ophone it corrupts all the photos, so i then have to turn it off, turn it on again and then it works. O2 sucks at times.
Title: Re: Twitter - community blog - sort of
Post by: Trekkygeek on January 13, 2009, 01:27:58 PM
Have you tried installinig Opera Mini instead of using the phones browser? It's far superior and I have very few problems with it. I'm also with O2 and have the unlimited internet plan which is something you may want to consider. YOu could also ask for an upgraded phone. I have the BlackBerry Curve and it's just perfect for updating my social doings.

I'm on contract till October so i can upgrade in September. I've taken this back to them twice now and i'm still not satisfied with it. I pay £35 a month and have a internet bolt on. Will check out Opera, cheers Tim.

I'm using a twitter native client on the iPhone but the mobile Twitted site is equally good. Used that on both iPhone and my Windows Mobile phone. I'm surprised it doesn't work on yours Meds but if you can get hold of Opera it may well sort you out.

So far I'm finding O2 better (for coverage) than Virgin ever was.
Title: Re: Twitter - community blog - sort of
Post by: Meds on January 13, 2009, 01:37:19 PM
I dont really have aproblem with o2, my little branch in town is great its just so annoying that because i'm contracted they just take it away fiddle with it and give it me back saying oh its been upgraded and then the little red light come on and the darn thing just freezes. Its not just me either, forums on this phone are full of similar problems. Iphone will be mine by September. Well if i still have a jov ha ha.
Will take a look at this Opera Mini. Can i get that via o2 internet?

Yes Meds.
Just Google mini opera from the phone and it's easy to install.
Then you just use it to log into your Twitter and then bookmark it.
Honestly mate, Opera mini is the best phone browser out there, and if Apple weren't so closed, I'd install it on my ipod touch. Safari sucks. *Looks at Feathers guiltily*

Cool.  I suspected that the Levar Burton on twitter might be a very well-crafted hoax.  I'm glad to see that it really is him. :)  I glanced at a few of his and Brent Spiner's tweets, and it looks as though they are kinda riding Wil W. (in a friendly manner, of course LOL). And the cool thing is, both Spiner and Burton take time to respond to most of their @ replies.  Classy folks.  :thumbsup

Well, I'm somewhat anti-hype. Everyone is talking about THE NEW INTERNET THING? My instincts tell me to run off in a different direction!

Unless... unless I'm convinced it is something very useful, or very beautiful or very funny.

Wil Wheaton didn't convince me to try twitter. LeVar Burton didn't. Neither did Brent Spiner. And that's almost half of the TNG cast!

But you did, so there I am:
@cos_mon_aut
And no regrets so far! :)

It was frankly a lot more fun and cooler before all the celebs decided to hop on to it.  I'm expecting a "new thing" to come along any day that will pull the geeks to it from Twitter.  Myspace --->  Facebook --->  Twitter --->  next??

So far when it comes to my hometown everyone is still stuck in Facebook. You guys are my only friends on Twitter. I ain't got one person I'm following from Colfax (all my high school friends from last year) and as far as I know I'm the only person who is using twitter from Colfax.

"From orbit: Getting more accustomed to living in space today and getting ready for our big rendezvous with hubble"
So out of place on Twitter between "walking the dog", "going to lunch", "working long" and "check my latest podcast/blog/thing".
Gives me an odd feeling.

Here's another good one: http://twitter.com/Astro_Mike (http://twitter.com/Astro_Mike)

Mike Massimino, mission specialist for STS-125. He's actually tweeting FROM ORBIT. That's pretty cool.

And how does the new RT feature differ from the old?
Title: Re: Twitter - community blog - sort of
Post by: cosmonaut on November 11, 2009, 04:12:58 AM
It looks different:
* there is a small gray icon indicating the RT
* it's the avatar of the original poster
* long posts won't get cut off
* you don't see your own RT but could look them up
It's not a huge change, but I like it!
