I love the original.  This could work!

If you suddenly, inexplicably feel the need for speed, the urge to belt out "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" in a bar... or the strange inkling to play beach volleyball in jeans, there's a reason: Paramount Pictures officially wants to reunite Tom Cruise, director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer for "Top Gun 2."

Vulture has learned that Paramount has already extended offers to Scott and Bruckheimer to start turning and burning on a sequel to the 1986 classic, and the studio has Oscar-winning screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie ("The Usual Suspects") in its sights to pen the script. Cruise, meanwhile, is said to have agreed to return as hotshot naval aviator Maverick in a small role, provide it's not too "obvious" -- e.g. Mav playing a version of Tom Skerrit's battle-hardened instructor from the original.

If that news takes your breath away (yes, we went there), you might want to sit down. Not only does Paramount want a "Top Gun" sequel; they're thinking franchise. This all sounds great, but just how feasible is it that this puppy will get off the tarmac?

Actually, pretty feasible. At a junket for "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" this summer, Bruckheimer confirmed that he'd been "recently approached again to start talking about [a sequel]." His biggest hangup: "The aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie a long time ago." The change Jer-Jer was referring to is that pilots these days aren't so much trained in the graceful art of dog-fighting as they are in the explosive practice of bomb-dropping.

But a source close to the project tells Vulture that McQuarrie has found a way around this potential deal-breaker, as well as a way to incorporate Maverick into the story that doesn't suck. The fact that McQuarrie is pals with Cruise and that he's got a hot hand in Hollywood right now -- his script for "Wolverine 2" is rumored to kick adamantium ass -- could mean that "Top Gun 2" gets cleared for a big-screen flyby very soon. Sounds like it's time to buzz the tower.

Ripley: Ash. Any suggestions from you or Mother?
Ash: No, we're still collating.
Ripley: [Laughing in disbelief] You're what? You're still collating? I find that hard to believe.

This idea doesn't give me goose-bumps and will not work forget Tom Cruise the Plane fact is unless they get Berlin to reform this will not fly.

We're going to need a new leading lady.  Kelly McGillis now:

What if two classic movies are in the mix for This remake:

The plot: An American nuclear aircraft carrier , it's "Top Gun" squadron and crew are caught in a classic dilemma when a supernatural storm sends them back in time just before the Japanese assault on Pearl Harbour.
