I tend to enjoy more obscure / less publicized films then "mainstream" ones; thought I'd create this topic if anyone's interested in sharing any suggestions.

I just watched a film movement (filmmovement.com) DVD "Le Grand Voyage" ... In french and arabic with english subtitles;

About a father and son on a cross-europe/middle east car pilgrimage to Mecca.

Not saying it's the greatest film you could next watch, but it was enjoyable and is recommended :)

Le Grand Voyage is a 2004 film written and directed by IsmaĆ«l Ferroukhi. The film portrays the relationship between father and son as both embark on a religious pilgrimage trip by car.  -- wikipedia

Meds has reminded me of two good films coming out of the UK - tho it's been a few years since I've watched them:

"This Is England"

a 2006 British drama film written and directed by Shane Meadows. The story centres on young skinheads in England in 1983. The film illustrates that skinhead subculture, whose 1960s roots include elements of black culture especially ska, soul, and reggae music, became adopted by white nationalists, which led to divisions within the skinhead scene. -- wikipedia

And on a lighter note:

"Two Men Went to War"

a 2002 British film based on a true World War II story, from Raymond Foxall's book Amateur Commandos which describes the adventures of two army dentists who sneak off on their own personal invasion of France. The film was directed by John Henderson. -- wikipedia

Watched "The Machinist" with Christian Bale last night.  Not exactly a mainstream movie, but quite good.  Bale looks scary skinny in that movie.

Just sitting down to watch "Whale Rider" - one of my most favorite films.

Perhaps better known and more widely circulated then the other films I'm hoping to share in this thread - still VERY highly rec'ed if you have not yet had the chance!

It's funny - Bale is a household name now, but I've only seen/know his from the film adaptation of Astrid Lindgren's book "Mio in the Land of Faraway" and Spielberg's adaptation of J.G. Ballard's "Empire of the Sun" both about 20, 25 years ago now I guess... He's the new Batman, right?

Was actually gonna use a screencap from Mio in that guess the actor thread if I ever managed to get one right - which'll never happen <grin>

Recently saw a fascinating documentary, available streaming on Netflix at the moment, called We Live In Public.  Here's the blurb fromn their site:

Ondi Timoner's documentary chronicles a decade in the life of Internet pioneer Josh Harris, who instigated an "artificial society" experiment in which more than 100 artists lived under 24-hour surveillance in an underground compound in New York City. After FEMA broke up the project, Harris turned the cameras on himself and his girlfriend. Timoner's provocative film (winner of the Grand Jury Prize: Documentary at Sundance) includes clips from Harris's projects as well as her own original footage.
