One of my favorite DS9 episodes.
Sisko really had a chance to shine, but Garak had to give just as strong a performance or the story would not have worked.
I especially liked the little details, such as Tolar's understated terror of Garak - which turned out to be warranted.

Although it was only mentioned, one point in the story that I don't understand is how Betazed was easily conquered.
I would think that a world of tele-paths would be powerful foe who could make their enemy think or see anything.
Are Betazoids pacifists who would surrender rather than fight?
It would have been awesome if Bester had shown up to help out...but that's another story ;)

Good commentary. I'd forgotten the scene of the ship docking - very reminiscent of Babylon 5 and about the only time we saw this in DS9 as I recall.

One point I'd forgotten is that given all of the forensic computer techniques that the end outcome of this story depends upon, I'm very surprised that Sisko dared to record and delete this log entry. Someone may still find it!

Yeah, Isent that in soooo late I didn't really think it would get in. It was almost spooky in the way it mirroored what Rico had just said, though. It almost looked planned.

Thanks Rico for that wonderful podcast.  That is one of my favorite DS9 episodes.  I listened to the podcast at work tonight and enjoyed it very much.  I'll be watching the DVD as soon as I get home.

I think the real strength of this episode is the narrative style with Sisko recording his log. Avery Brooks is such an amazing actor that he really puts across how conflicted and guilty Sisko feels about doing what he did without overacting it. It shows him as a good man who was compelled to do something utterly and completely against his morals (I believe that is referred to as cognitive dissonance from my very small psych knowledge).

I'd say this is not only one of my favorite DS9 eps but one of my favorite Trek eps of all time.

Yep - Avery really rocks in this episode (as he does in many).  The guy really is such a strong actor without ever going over the top - in my view.  Love to see him do a new TV series or good film sometime.  I think he does a lot of theater these days.
