I used to use Avast and it allowed my PC to get infected. So, I uninstalled and used AVG and it was great for about a year or so and then it allowed a really nasty virus that tried to take over my PC. So, I decided no more free antivirus for me. I donloaded Bit Defender and have not had any problems since. The only thing I don't like is that it wants me to keep all the Microsoft stuff udpated and I don't want Windows Live and Explorer 8. I'm happy with Explorer 7. I don't mind keeping Windows XP up-to-date but the other stuff? For $25.00 you can hardly go wrong. It has caught several attempted trojan infections. One exploit that is a java script hole in Adobe Reader.

Why would you have an issue with getting IE 8? The browser is a massive vector for infections and each new release is substantially more secure then the one before.

Mostly for one reason...I can't set up the command bar where I can customize it. I use the LINKS feature to hold all of my daily and most frequent URLS. When I installed Explorer 8 it wants to display all the links in order across the command bar from left to right. In 7 I can draw the LINKS over to the right where only the word LINKS displays without showing any urls in the command bar and use the pulldown menu to access my links. It's the way I like my browser to look. I have tried several other browsers and have not found any that display text as well as Explorer does. I hate the way Firefox renders text. It's not smooth and clean like Explorer it's pixilated (remember I have a 42 inch monitor). Same with Opera. Explorer is the only browser that renders everything well. I hate being stuck with Microsoft at all but that's the way it is for me.

Is anyone using that one Leo Laporte recommends?  It's called Nod32.

My mother is looking for an antivirus for her office in a hospital.

Well, my brother's computer got a bad virus (I suspect he didn't keep up to date....) so we've made the move from Avast to Windows Security Essentials.  I had been "testing" that program for a couple weeks and found that it was more reliable, stable and speedier than Avast.  Its free and no hassle with stupid keys or w/e so I just switched us to it.  What better way to keep up to date than with the makers of the Operating System your using?

We also are using Spybot and Malwarebytes for keeping us covered on that end.  Although I have to find out if Spybot is actually doing any good now with Windows and Malwarebytes.

Malware already found 1 hijacker on mine.  Tsk tsk Tim.
