I remember one time when we talked about it, Dreamweaver was the top application.  Is it still on top as far as comercial web design products?

In the past I used open-source templates reworked all the design in NVU, which I think Mozilla has quit updating.

Dreamweaver is still out there, however if you really want to leverage the latest and greatest tools in design you'll have to start paying attention to Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and some javascript frameworks such as jQuery. jQuery really simplifies javascript and to me makes it a much better option then flash (then again I just dislike flash, sorry Jen).

Yeah I've played around with CCS in NVU, but I never made one totally from scratch, always reworking a blank template into what I wanted it to end up being.

I know java is basically C (or at least that's what they told is in programming 1) how different is Javascript from that?

Oh Java and Javascript are nothign alike. They basically named it that for marketing reasons. Javascript basically allows you to dynamically access and modify elements on the page. Syntactically it's somewhat simillar to C/Java (in that you'd probably be able to read it to some degree if you knew those languages).

I've played around with both CSS and Javascript for my web work.  Both allow you to do some really neat stuff.  Lots of good info online to help you too.

I hope this isn't a dumb question, I've just never done it?

What's good to use for a searchable database?

The reason I ask is I'm thinking of doing a site built around Amazon's affiliate program where I would review products that I like (DVDs, Books, Electronics) and have the affiliate link where people could buy stuff.

I guess each product would need it's own page with a full review and I would need a search bar to find things.

All the pages I've done have never really done anything.  Just basic text, links and pictures.

SQL or Oracle
Ripley: Ash. Any suggestions from you or Mother?
Ash: No, we're still collating.
Ripley: [Laughing in disbelief] You're what? You're still collating? I find that hard to believe.

Anyone like vettedmerch.com as the name for such a website?  I'm thinking of buying it.

I know, I can come up with all these ideas about what I want it to be but get stumped naming it!

sheldor

kind of surprised but reviewmerch.com is available.  There is also a guy who wrote a css layout wizard - don't recall his name.  You just indicate the layout and the app generates the proper css classes, padding and div tags.  Only like $40.

Yeah, get a name that is available.  Unless you are a major corp, no reason to buy a site name.  I use networksolutions.com to show which names are available and if nothing is found, they will make suggestions for alternative names.  Easy to use.

Holy Cow you're right!  That's a great looking piece of digital realestate.  Think I should get reviewedmerch.com as well?

God Help us if I ever have to name a baby!

My first choice would be merchperch.com but that one is taken.

I like having merch in the title.  Kinda rolls off the tung like the flix in netflix.

Anyone like merchblast.com?
