Chris is becoming the reboot master...

Chris Pine has already commanded The USS Enterprise and now he's reportedly about to boldly go where Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck have gone before him - the role of Jack Ryan.

According to Variety, Chris has been tapped to play the CIA analyst in a reboot of the series based on the popular Tom Clancy novels.

"Tom Clancy created an unforgettable character with Jack Ryan. With Chris in this role, we've taken our first step in creating a re-boot that lives up to the successful lineage of the franchise," Paramount said in a statement Tuesday night.

The iconic Jack Ryan was first played by Alec Baldwin in 1990's "The Hunt for Red October," Harrison Ford took over in 1992's "Patriot Games" and 1994's "Clear and Present Danger," and Ben Affleck stepped into the role in 2002's "The Sum of All Fears."

He will be pretty good.  I hated Ben Afleck in that role.....actually I cannot think of anything that I like him in!  :)

I have been wondering when they would tackle Executive Orders (which is uncomfortably close to being spot on to 9/11).

Yeah, crashing a plane into the Capitol Building...too soon.

Right, and the Anthrax in the mail attacks were also close to the same type of attacks in the book.

Actually I don't think this has been confirmed. He is in negotiations for the role. Actually I think he makes a great Kirk but I can't see him as Jack Ryan. He's not sophisticated enough. Jack is like an American version of James Bond in some ways. Afleck was a poor choice for Ryan and Ford was a great choice. The Afleck film was good overall but he was the weakest link in the film. The Harrison Ford films were all good films made great by the presence of Ford and I just don't see Pine being able to pull it off. Maybe in another ten years but right now he's too young and inexperienced as an actor.

I've always had a bit of a problem with these with any actor in the role - I enjoyed each of the films for what it was, I'm really not that critical but having read the books a long time before, the films really haven't done them justice. The fact that they were filmed out of order hasn't halped this view either. Patriot Games was the closest and I probably enjoyed it the most.

If they're drafting in another actor then I'd almost prefer they start from the beginning again and run through the sequence properly. It won't happen that way though.

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

I agree, but I think he might be old enough for Jack early on in his career - such as Hunt For Red October - when he was still a young analyst.

That's exactly why I want to see them dart from the first story, Patriot Games, and then work through the sequence. If they do it right, it could work well.

See, I never read Jack Ryan as an American James Bond. He was much more emotional and vulnerable. I liked Ford, but I thought the best was Baldwin, he seemed the most like the Jack Ryan from the books to me, especially the early ones like "Hunt for Red October". It was a great balance between strong character, incredible mind, and some self confidence without being arrogant. I thought Baldwin nailed it.

Has anyone seen Chris Pine's movie Carriers?

Baldwin was good in that role.  I wonder why they didn't stick with him in subsequent movies?

The only problem with Chris for me is he seems a bit young for the role.  Most of the books I have read by Clancy with Jack Ryan make him a bit older and more seasoned and experienced.  But I'm not up to date on all the Clancy/Ryan books.  You know who could be a good Jack Ryan is Jeffrey Donovan from "Burn Notice."  But I'm willing to see what Chris can do in the part.

I love Chris Pine!  I am so excited to see him in this role.

I could see Jeffrey Donovan in the role. At least he has the looks and sophistication to play the part. Not baby face Pine though.
