Anyone who knows me at all knows that I try to do most things using my PDA/Phone of the moment rather than resorting to a PC. This isn't always easy...or sensible in all cases but it seems to be the way I work.

Recently I was contemplating getting a small digital recorder for doing podcast comments etc since sitting in the living room with the rest of the family doing that sort of thing is somewhat embarrassing, not to mention interrupt prone!

Anyway, I never got as far as buying one but was looking round the iPhone app store this week when I came across Poddio. Not only does it turn the phone into a digital recorder (like the built in audio app) but it provides the facility to save the results as wav or aif files, export them to a PC/Mac for use elsewhere (e.g. audacity) or FTP them to wherever you need.

You can also edit the recordings directly on the phone if you really need to but that may be a little extreme for a mobile task, even for me! Having said that, it actually does the job quite well.

Email is also supported but since it won't generate mp3s directly, that's of limited use. Wav files can be big!

So, instead of spending £20+ on a dedicated bit of kit, I spent £2.99 and now have a perfectly servicable portable recorder that has the advantage of being always in my pocket just in case the mood takes me to record a quick comment.

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

Sounds cool!  And great for a quick comment.  Can you email the files directly from the iPhone or does it still require exporting them to a computer first?

Modified the above to cover email - you can but only as a .wav, .aif or the internal iPhone format.

Wav is excessively large but .aif may be smaller - haven't tried it yet.

I wonder if I can get a microphone for my touch?  Cause that would rock.

I have been and always will be, your friend.

The ame company that sell the software sell a mic attachment for iPhone/iPod. It's a wierd looking thing that looks something like a mini studio mic with a 3.5mm jack on the end.

I'm assuming the iPod Touch has the same audio jack socket as the iPhone, i.e. 3.5mm stereo with mic.

edit: Just checked vericorder.com. Mic is claimed as compatible with iPod Touch 2G

Thank you, I'll look for that.
