Ah, another full commentary episode — cool. It's this style that really got me hooked on TISF. Cool to hear you back in the saddle again. I liked the plot points you questioned.

The reference to (what I'm assuming to be fictitious song) "Nightbird" seemed to me to be a song that had a very difficult solo. The song's title may be a reference to jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker, who had the nickname, "Yardbird". "Bird", as they called him, was a pioneer in the Bebop style of jazz. That style was noted for its frenetic pace. Bebop solos could be dizzying (no intended reference to Mr. Gillespie). The song that Riker was about to play had a Bebop sensibility to it. The fact that he'd attempt that type of solo on trombone would be rather daunting, if not injurious.

Thanks for including the update segment to the podcast.

Yay! I love these too, esp TNG and Voyager. I generally listen to them at night in bed or on long bus/train rides. And there's something geekly romantic about falling asleep under the stars in the woods listening to Star Trek :)

Funny you should say that.  A long time ago when I was growing up I had the original series recorded on cassette tapes.  My brother and I would listen to them as we went to sleep.  It's amazing how well you can follow the stories just with the audio only.

I did the same thing with Buck Rogers and the 25th century, the Six Million dollar man and Star Trek TOS.  My little mono recorder got a workout with payless cassette tapes in all their hissing glory!

Rico-  GREAT SHOW.  I loved all the things you had to say, plus I found myself smiling at Phil's update.  We are so geeky around here.  :)

Here is the song that I did called Help Tom.
You can download it at http://www.christrocks.com/parody

HELP TOM

Help, I need somebody,
Help, not just anybody,
Help, you know I need someone, help.

When I was younger, eight years ago today,
I beamed down with my Starfleet buds on the team away
But now my team is gone and I'm left all alone
Somehow the transporter created me a clone.

Help me if you can, My name is Tom
And that guy that looks like me can't play that song
Help me, get my feet back on the ground,
Won't you please, please help me?

And now my life has changed here on Nervalla Four
I want to prove myself by retrieving the computer core.
My brother disagrees he thinks that I just whine,
So I'm gonna go after Troi and really make her mine.

Help me if you can, my name is Tom
And the clone of mine has taken up the com
Help me, get my feet back on the ground,
Won't you please, please help me.

So with my phaser I make a real cool pic
Jenarin Falls where me and Deanna took a trip
But with two of us it just doesn't seem to work
It wouldn't matter if my name had just been Kirk

Help me if you can, my name is Tom
and I can't stay on this ship for very long
Help me, get my feet back on the ground,
Won't you please, please help me, help me, help me, oh.

Great show this week! This has always been and episode I've enjoyed. Heavy character show. I really like how we get to see Troi and Riker's relationship.

Thanks for the shout out Darmok!

Yes, you are the one that brought out his geekiness!  He just couldn't resist the TNG reference... and it all snowballed from there!  :)

For some reason, I always remember that fact out of the TNG Technical Manual.

It was an eye-opener. Never saw the episode before and didn't become aware of Thomas Riker until Deep Space Nine.

Agreed; I'm hoping to find or make mp3's of all the TNG and VOY episodes to keep me company on lonely nights. Audio bedtime stories :)

You guys both rock. Darrell, you do have a cool voice.

Just a note to Darmok:  Darmok may be my very favorite episode of all Trek episodes ever made from all generations... and if I'm forgetting a better one, I can't think of it.  :)

(Woops.  I guess that last statement is redundant.)
