Who you gonna call... Ghostbuster III is in development

Sony Pictures has hired "The Office" co-executive producers to pen a script for a third "Ghostbusters" film reports the trades.

Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky will pen the script which is designed to bring back together the original cast of Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson.

Eisenberg and Stupnitsky just wrote the comedy "The Year One" which Ramis directed. No deals will be made with the original cast until the script is ready.

Ramis with Aykroyd wrote and Ivan Reitman directed the first two films released in 1984 and 1989 respectively.

The news comes just a few days after Aykroyd revealed in an interview with E! News that "two sharp young writers are purported to be writing the sequel" - and that he'd love to get Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow involved.

AS long as it is the original cast....Count me in!!  Ghostbusters is one of my favorite '80s movie of all time.

I'd heard that the third film was going to be animated like the last Turtles movie. Has a live action film been confirmed?

Which is why the game has disappeared into development limbo, hopefully they're just holding the release to tie it in with the film and the worst case scenario is they can it... I can't wait for another film though, I wonder if they'll do the 'Ghostbusters in Hell' storyline?

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Tonight's closing night film at Fantastic Fest was CITY OF EMBER with director Gil Kenan in attendance and a surprise appearance by Bill Murray. I dug the movie (more on that later), but the reason you're reading this is due to a question Kraken asked during the Q&A.

I'm sure at some point the video of this will come out, but the non-line for line version of the question was how would Murray feel about strapping on the proton pack and kicking some ghost ass again?

I was very curious to hear Murray's answer. He's not as available to the press or public as Dan Aykroyd or Harold Ramis and he also seemed to be the least enthusiastic about a Ghostbusters sequel...

But tonight he said that he knew "some writers from THE OFFICE" were taking a stab at the script right now (which we already knew) and that he thinks that's a good start. He paused for a few seconds then said that he thinks enough time has passed and that "the wounds from GHOSTBUSTERS 2 are healed" and that he would definitely be into doing another GHOSTBUSTERS movie, stating that the first 40 minutes of the original film is some of the best stuff he's been associated with and the whole shoot was an amazing amount of fun.

He also went on to say that his enthusiasm for Ghostbusters was heightened after recording the voice of Peter Venkman for the video game over the summer. In fact, he said he found himself walking down the street singing the Ghostbusters theme song and then thought people walking around him were going to start yelling at him to "get over yourself, Bill," so he stopped... But the enthusiasm was there.

Thats good news. If Murray is going to do a third Ghostbusters, we need him to be passionate about it. This is gonna be good. (one hopes)

Ghostbusters 3 Starts Filming this Winter?

The Los Angeles Times talked to Dan Aykroyd about Ghostbusters 3 that is in development at Columbia Pictures. Here are several excerpts:

Aykroyd said Sigourney Weaver is on board now, as are the original squad of ectoplasmic specialists -- Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson.

"We could be in production by winter."

Aykroyd said he wishes Ivan Reitman would return to direct the third film in the series but that he's "too busy as a mega-producer" to take it on; his second choice is Ramis, who, of course, co-wrote the first two "Ghostbusters" films with Aykroyd and has numerous directing credits, most notably "Groundhog Day" and "Analyze This."

The details of story are still in play, but Aykroyd said he's hoping for a five-member "new generation" team with several female members. "I'd like it to be a passing-of-the-torch movie. Let's revisit the old characters briefly and happily and have them there as family but let's pass it on to a new generation."

I am curious to see this film. Since all the originals are involved I have hope it will actually be good and not turn in Thunderbirds the movie (kid based).

Eh, I'm not so happy about Akroyds quote about only briefly revisiting the classic characters.  I am not all that interested in a new franchise, but a true sequel would have me in line at midnight screenings on day one.  The main problem between Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II was that the movie turned into a real kids franchise with cartoons, toys, etc and drifted far from the edgy, dark, and adult themed humor that made the first movie so great.  I really hope they can recapture the magic from the first film and avoid the temptation of yet another reboot of a loved property.  Ah who am I kidding, whatever movie it is I will be there day one to see it if it is called Ghostbusters III

I was so excited wen I first heard that the original cast was coming back for Ghostbusters 3. But after reading what Akroyd has said lately I am worried.  The idea of them being in the movie briefly and training cadets sounds incredibly LAME.
the 2 actors he mentioned that he wanted in 2 of the top roles were Alyssa Milano and Eliza Dushku. You have got to be kidding me! they are both hot and I would mind seeing them on a TV show. But I do not want to see them as lead characters in a new Ghostbusters movie.  I am no longer excited about this movie.

Alyssa may be the new Secretary, since she did voice acting for the Ghostbusters Video game I assume they felt they needed to throw her a bone of some kind to make her happy!

Don't panic Spockfan, I am sure there is logic of some kind to this.  I could envision Eliza being a occult expert called in to help with a case (lots of Buffy references could abound with this), or someone who calls them for help.  But not as a lead...

Speaking of Buffy,... has anyone heard anything new about the Buffy REBOOT?  All I know is the Joss is not involved, which cannot be good. :(

It's Official - Ivan Reitman Will Be Directing Ghostbusters 3!

It's now confirmed. Ivan Reitman, father of Jason Reitman who directed the two original Ghostbusters movies as well as Kindergarten Cop and My Super Ex-Girlfriend most recently, will direct Ghostbusters 3 sometime this year. MTV caught up with Reitman on the National Board of Review red carpet last night and got word straight from him that he will indeed direct the sequel. The script from writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky is in and a second draft is in the works. "They have delivered a draft," Reitman said. "We are working our way through another draft... good work is being done and all of us have our fingers crossed."

I was not a fan of the 2nd movie BUT the 1st is such a classic. Here's hoping that this is a good movie!
