Peter David is hands down one of THE BEST modern Star Trek writers.  And as much as I love what he wrote for the TNG book series, his Star Trek: New Frontier is even better.  The perfect balance of adventure, character moments, and genuine humor.  Really good stuff.

I agree with this statement however, the series is written in such a way that there really is no good jumping on point except from the beginning and I think we're close to 20 books now. Sticking with his books based on the shows and characters you know already is easier to handle. I love his New Frontier books but I've been buying them since they came out in the late 1990s.

I've debated starting the New Frontier series because I've enjoyed all of David's other Trek fiction but never got involved for that exact reason, Kevin.  Now with 20 books (!) there's even less of a chance for me to jump in.

I don't mind jumping into big series. At least you don't have to sit and wait for new books to come out. Also, what difference does it make if there's 2 books or 20? If you enjoy the series, keep on reading. If you don't, then stop.

Another great peter David is Vedetta. Very early TNG novel with Guinan, Data and a Borg on the cover. Also very cool!!

yes! i wrote a book report of it a few months ago! very good book.
i don't think this is peter david but i also enjoyed Metamorphosis. it has the same cover layout as Vendetta but with picard, data, and riker on the cover. all about data and his wishes to be human :)

I've read the New Frontier series from the beginning and while I'd say there are a couple of odd story choices in there, on the whole I really enjoyed them. Don't worry about the size of the series, red the first anthology of four and decide whether or not you want to continue.

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

Well yeah, the other reason is that I'm not sure that I'm really interested in the adventures of a strange new crew.  I trust you guys though, and love Peter David, so when I am done with Song of Ice and Fire (whenever that is) I will give the first book a shot.  What's it called?

Book one is called 'House of Cards' although I got it as part of an anthology edition containing the first four stories.

I know the first four books were compiled into an anthology volume and released in hardcover. You could probably find a used copy if you did a search online.

This was an excellent book as I recall and it was written by Jean Lorrah. Before Pocket Books started releasing Trek books in hardcover they released what they called "Giant Novels" and this was part of that series. They were supposed to be special, larger, and more epic. Talking about all these old novels is making me want to go back and re-read them and see if they are as good as I remember them. So many of the newer Trek books are so well written that I'm kind of spoiled.

Wasn't Probe one of those "giant novels?"   That was another one I really liked a lot, about the origins of the doomsday machine if I recall correctly. Also Strangers In The Sky was another, that told the story of first contact with the vulcans before continuity was changed by the movie.  Both excellent.

Probe was released as a hardcover. The giant novels were all paperback. Stangers in the Sky was a giant novel. Both fine novels for the time.

I placed a hold for the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy at the library. Waiting for it to come in.... :)

Right Probe had something to do with Star Trek IV.  I need to read those all again, so good!  Someday...

Just finished Zero Day this morning, think I'll be moving on to book 4 of the Dark Tower series, Wizard and Glass.
