Thought I'd start a new thread for those to discuss the movie after you see it.  Well I went today with my younger son Eric and loved it. He really enjoyed it as well.  A few things had to be cut from the novel for time but nothing critical I thought. Really, really good actress to play the girl Lyra. If you like fantasy you will enjoy this movie. It is beautifully done. Some of the scenes and visuals are amazing. I loved some of the scenes up in the cold north with the low sun, etc. Very cool looking. So go give it a shot and check it out for yourself.

I went and saw this today, and really enjoyed it as well. Took a little bit to get going for me, but once it did really enjoyed it. I really liked Sam Elliots character, and would have liked to seen more of Daniel Craig. The All the effects were great with all the different animals.

I loved the movie.  Bit rough starting but I got into it.  Great special effects, great actors, great movie.  I'll admit though, I've never read the books so I honestly don't see all the fuss with it being apparently "anti-Christian".  It really didn't seem much like it.  Though we need not talk about this as we did for weeks in a previous thread.

All in all 8.5 out of 10 stars.

Well I was finally able to see this movie... I really enjoyed it. I have read the book and they do cut quite a bit of it down but I still think the movie flowed. I really enjoyed how the showed Lyra reading the Alethiometer. Also when someone dies and how their demon kind of burst into sparks. The visuals are awesome. They did end this movie on a high note.. unlike the book. And there is nothing "anti-religious" about this movie. I'm bummed that it's not doing well in theaters here in the US.. luckily it's doing well overseas.. we still might get a sequel.

Hello :)  The Golden Compass Movie Storybook (a picture book - style companion to the film) was apparently made before the final scenes of the film were cut.  There's a couple of still shots, including the last scene from the book.  Kinda cool to see what we missed out on, at least till the next film which I guess is supposed to open with these cut scenes.

New Line Cinema's The Golden Compass, starring Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, crossed the $300 million mark at the worldwide box office and now has a cumulative gross of more than $315 million. The film has earned more than $67 million in the United States since its Dec. 7 opening.

The fantasy epic has performed strongly in various foreign territories -- including the United Kingdom, Spain, South Korea and Australia -- where this genre continues to be popular. On March 1, The Golden Compass will open in its last major territory -- Japan.

"'The Golden Compass' has immense global appeal," said Rolf Mittweg, President and Chief Operating Officer of Worldwide Distribution and Marketing at New Line Cinema. "The box office revenue has been nothing less than astonishing overseas. With the forthcoming premiere in Japan, we can expect a significant boost to our worldwide box office."

Based on author Philip Pullman's bestselling and award-winning novel, The Golden Compass tells the first story in Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. The fantasy adventure is written and directed by Chris Weitz, and features an all-star cast of Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Sam Elliott, Eva Green and Dakota Blue Richards.
