Well, since the site was running a bit slow late yesterday I sent Powweb another email.  This is their response.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Unfortunately, it is not possible to move your Web site to a new better server. We have upgraded the MySQL version to the higher still there is huge traffic or heavy load on our SQL servers. This is the reason some of the customers are still experiencing the Web site slowness issue. Our management has decided to install some new SQL database hardware and move some of the accounts to new hardware. Once it is done we can fully control the load on our servers. As of now our engineers are aware and try to resolve the load on our servers. Trust me, PowWeb would be back with more better and reliable performing servers after the implementation of new hardware.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. We are available 24x7.

Please reply to this e-mail with the requested information, so that we can assist you further.

Sincerely,

Stuart Thomas

I'm still working on trying to possibly move the entire forum to some of the new hosting space on Dreamhost I purchased.  But I am getting some errors when I transfer the old database, posts, etc. over.  If I can get this worked out I will move us over.  If not, I guess we have to live with the occasional slow down here.  The only other answer would be to start over in a way.  But I'm not willing to do that right now.  I'll keep everyone posted.

That does sound disappointing. Unfortunately, deciding to buy hardware, and the time it takes to implement could be months, and I am sure every step of the way management has profit first and formost over cust sat.

This SQL upgrade they did seems like a huge blunder, I'm surprised they haven't rolled it back.

Yes - I agree.  I never had all these troubles before they started to monkey with stuff.

:roflmao  When I tried to open the topic this morning, I got the "web page not found" message.   :lol2

I've had a MySQL related problem once with 1&1. The server was down for a few hours, when it went back up we lost 3 days of posts on the forum. They had to use a 3 day old backup they had. Turns out it was a hard drive crash they had.

The forum is pretty stable right now.  I think I can move it now - if needed.  But I'm going to wait for the time being and see how it goes.

What kind of SQL errors were you getting when you tried to move the DB? Key constraint conflicts?

Rico

Duplicate entry in one area/line.  But I think I have a way around it now.  But as I said, I'm going to leave things in place for now.  In general the forum has been ok this week.  I made a few tweaks to it that hopefully are helping performance out.
