Well I've switched, temporarily, from Star Wars novels to Star Trek. I was getting burned out...After "The Courtship of Princess Leia" I figured it was time to take a break...the book  was a bit disappointing. I've decided I'm waiting for the next Darth Bane Novel to be released. Between now and then I'll read Trek or anything else that peaks my interest.

I, like Rico mentioned on his last podcast, have missed Star Trek Enterprise. It had so much story left to tell. I saw the Enterprise novel "The Good That Men Do", sitting on the shelf at the local book store, and the cover art drew me to it. As a graphic designer I have to admit that I am often attracted to aesthetics. Yes, I judge a book by its cover...at least initially.  ;)

Anyway, the reason I purchased this book wasn't because of the awesome cover illustration, it was  because of the description on the back of the cover:

"Over two hundred years ago, the life of one of Starfleet's earliest pioneers came to a tragic end, and Captain Jonathan Archer, the legendary commander of Earth's first warp-five starship, lost a close friend. Or so it seemed for many years. But with the passage of time, and the declassification of certain crucial files, the truth about that fateful dayâ€"the day commander Charles "Trip" Tucker III didn't dieâ€"could finally be revealed. Why did Starfleet feel it was necessary to rewrite history? And why only now can the truth be told?"

That description sold me. I hated that they killed  Trip off. So far Mangles And Martin (co-authors) have done a great job painting a picture in words and most importantly they've nailed the characters. Shrann makes a come back in the first half...I love that character. And the funeral for Elizabeth (Trip and T'pol's child) takes placeâ€"I thought that scene was nicely written.

I'll let you know definitively, what I think of it when I've actually finished the book....I'm not even half way through it yet.  :D

FYI, it looks like there is a lack of Enterprise novels..."The Good Men Do" is the latest one. I hope they publish more.  :(

I picked up this book a few months back as well. I had started reading it, but then got tied up with some things, so will have to try it again.

I read the book but was not impressed. The whole premise of the story was a little toooo far fetched for me to buy into. So far none the ENT books have been really worth the time to read IMHO.

Hey Ktrek what was "toooo far fetched" .. I mean it's is Sci fi and Fantasy.  Most things are far fetched.. that's why I love the genre.

From the description it sounds pretty good.

I think I have become more fond of Enterprise myself as time has gone by.  I'm always looking for a good book to read on the metro to and from work so maybe I'll pick this one up.  Jen, make sure to let us know what you think when you are finished with it!

Kenny,

I can't disclose all the things I didn't care for in the book without heavy spoilers. Let's just say that the way they keep Tucker alive is way too contrived for my taste in sci-fi fiction. I would say almost over the top. I know that Trip is most peoples favorite character and so the authors found what they thought was a way to keep him alive. However, I prefer to stay with what we have on screen. Tragic as it was Trip died and that was that.

The book was an OK read I suppose but there are so many far better Trek books out there.

Thanks for the heads up.  I'll check the book out sometime.  I do think Enterprise had a lot of untapped stories left to tell.
