Captain Jean-Luc Picard

I'm a big Atlantis fan.  I've got Season 1 on DVD with plans to collect Seasons 2 & 3. :biggrin You all are going to love the season finale!  :jawdrop

When I first started watching Atlantis I didn't like it as well as SG-1 but it has grown on me. I'm still not all that fond of Teyla as I really think her character is a stretch. I'm glad they got rid of Ford as I always thought he was the weakest character on the show. I love Ronon! I'm sad to see Beckett leave but it sounds like good changes are coming. I know a lot of people don't like Torri Higginson as Weir but she is one of my faves. I also had a hard time adjusting to the John Sheppard character because he was much too like O'Neil in SG-1 and it seemed like they were trying to work what was a successful formula in one show into another. That said though, I have come to really love the show and find it as good and sometimes better than SG-1 but SG-1 will probably always be top banana for me no matter how many series Stargate eventuates into.

I liked Ford.  I don't mind that he was replaced with Ronan, but I'm severaly annoyed that Ford has been forgotten about.  I'm convinced that the intent was for him to die in "The Hive," but they wanted to do it in such a way that allows them to bring him back if they want to.  If they had killed him off on screen, at least we'd have resolution.  Instead, we're just left wondering. :blink

I'm annoyed that Dr. Beckett was killed off and that Dr. Weir is being reduced to a recurring guest star.  Both characters have been there from the beginning and help define the show, especially Weir.  She is the heart of the series.  However, I am thrilled that Carter is joining the cast. :biggrin

Really ?   Carter is joining Atlantis ?  Either she can't get work anywhere else or she just loves this sci-fi stuff.  Will she be joining at the end of th SG-1 (if it does end sometime :)  ).  Wonder what that will mean for Rodney now that he is in a kind-a/sort-a serious relationship ?  Wier will be a recurring role ?   Uggghhhh...I thought her and Shepard were the strongest characters.  I liked Ford but didn't really care for the direction they took with him.

I think we need a Family Guy/SG-1/Atlantis spoof. :D

Yea...Amanda Tapping had signed a two year contract at the begiining of season 10 and so has a year left to fulfil. She will be a recurring character from what I uderstand but will be in 14 episodes of Atlantis. And SG-1 is already finished, as far as the series goes, but they have two SG-1 movies coming out this fall. Season ten will be released on DVD in July. As for Rodney and Carter I guess we will find out soon enough as season 4 progresses. :P

Weir will still be on Atlantis but not as frequently. I suppose with Carter coming on board there is only so much budget the show can afford. ;)

P.S. I didn't see till just now that Ricky said this would be spoiler free! Oops! I guess a moderator needs to change the header title and add SPOILERS to it.

Amanda Tapping had signed a contract to appear in an 11th season of SG-1 should it be produced.  With SG-1 cancelled after Season 10, the producers decided to use the contract to bring her over to Atlantis.  Amanda Tapping loves to guest star, but interviews suggest she's not thrilled about being a full time regular.  I suspect this largely because she expected to be home with her kid for a while after SG-1 ended.  Anyway, she will appear in 14 of 20 episodes for Atlantis Season 4.  She will be creditted as a series regular, not as a recurring guest star.  Carter will not join the Atlantis Expedition in an episode of SG-1.  SG-1 ended with Carter still a member of the team.  She will join the expedition at the start of Atlantis Season 4.  This makes her role in the upcoming SG-1 movies a bit confusing.  Will they be set before Atlantis Season 4, or will they feature Carter joining the team temorarily for the movie's crisis?  I suspect the McKay/Carter stuff will be toned down now that she will be there full time.

Weir will still be around.  For the first half of the season (10 episodes), they plan to feature Weir in 4 episodes.  For the second half of the season (10 episodes), they would like to bring Weir back for additional episodes, but they are unsure as to how many.

Would you like to know what Carter's role will be in Season 4?  :)

Rico

Mark, Mark....I told you this awhile ago I thought.  Tapping/Carter will become the new leader of the Atlantis mission.  Weir will slowly be phased out - probably back to Earth, but that isn't clear right now.  I feel bad for Torri who has done a good job with Dr. Weir.  I really liked seeing her "off-duty" in the recent Atlantis episode out on the lunch "date."  I hope they can find a way to bring her back on from time to time.

If you told me during a tag-team session of warcraft.  You were safe blinking away and I was dying because I could not get mounted in time -- I'm sure I wasn't listening :)

Yeah, I thought she did a great job with Wier.  Makes me nervous when they start changing the cast.   I sometimes wonder how far they can take these series -- eventually there has to be peace in the galaxy.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard

Keep in mind this show is set in a different galaxy than SG-1 was.

I don't have any problem with the Ford or Ronon characters, but I really liked that scene in Hot Zone where McKay and Zelenka are playing this game with prime numbers and Ford gets in Zelenka's face saying, "Is this how guys like you get revenge for guys like me beating you up in high school?"

There is a certain amount of truth to the dumb jock vs inept nerd conflict.

What bugs me about Ford was where he frees Sheppard aboard the hive ship and says he got some enzyme with no explanation as to how.  The last we saw him he was suffering withdrawl.  I though magical escapes went out of style in the 50's.  But that is the fault of the writers not the character.

Andre Norton does it better than J.K.Rowling

Captain Jean-Luc Picard

He probably caught a Wraith off guard, killed him, and harvested the enzyme.

I didn't know Rodney's sister (Kate Hewlett) is his sister in real-life.   Neat

I'm a BIG Atlantis fan (go figure by my name) and I was gutted when they decided to cancel it. I have seasons one to five on my laptop and it keeps me sane, I think I only cried once and that was in season three when they killed of Carson (in the episode 'Sunday') and I balled like a baby. He was my favourite character, next to Weir.

I didn't particularly like it when they introduce Picardo/Woolsey into it as the new leader of the expedition but I can understand why what with Tapping doing my SG-1 orientated things but still, anyone else but him. Don't ask me who, I haven't thought that far.

The last episode was good if a little predictable, though it does give it scope to do 'Extinction', Hopefully we will see what happened to Weir and the Replicators that escaped.
Captain Kathryn Janeway: [entering the mess hall] Coffee, black.
Neelix: Uh, sorry, Captain. We lost two more replicators this morning...
Captain Kathryn Janeway: Listen to me very carefully, because I'm only going to say this once: Coffee. Black.
Neelix: Yes, ma'am.

Feathers

I still think the last episode was a bit of stretch in terms of the way they 'suddenly' came up with the 'faster than hyperspace' drive but opinion seems to be that it was a massively compressed Season 6 arc so I guess I'm happier to see it in than out.

Atlantis did have flaws but probably no more or less than SG-1.

Why did everyone always live near the gate?
Did they ever check for an advanced civilisation over the horizon?

and so on...

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

Rico

Not everyone lived near the gate.  There were colonies set up on the limited land masses on the planet.
