Mummy 3 Spoilers Unwrapped

Al Gough, who is co-writing the third installment in the Mummy film franchise with partner Miles Millar, told SCI FI Wire that the sequel will unwrap a new mummy and feature a character who is the grown son of Rick and Evie (played in the previous films by Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz). It's aiming to shoot this summer under director Rob Cohen (Stealth) for a 2008 release.

Gough and Millar, who also created The CW's Smallville, said the sequel will also have a new concept. "Stephen Sommers [who wrote and directed the previous two films] and his partner, Bob Ducsay, ... approached us and said, 'Steve doesn't want to write the third movie. Would you guys be interested?'" Gough said in an interview. "And we were like, 'Well, it's a third.' But then they had a concept for it that we really liked. They had an idea for the movie, which is something we always wanted to do. So we're like, 'Well, if we don't do it, they're going to do it in this movie.'"

Gough said that he and Millar added their own ideas to the script, including a storyline centering on the main characters of Rick and Evie. "We figured out a really good family story with Rick and Evie, and [their son] Alex is now grown up. So it's really interesting." Alex was played as a young boy in 2001's The Mummy Returns by Freddie Boath.

As for whether Fraser and Weisz will reprise their roles in the film, Gough said that he was confident the script is good enough to persuade them to return. "They're in negotiations," he said. "So the plan is to bring them back. I think it'll end up being Brendan and Rachel, ultimately. They're the core of the movie. That's why people love the Mummy movies. And then it's taking that and then expanding it and introducing [a] new character and a new mummy. So we're really excited to get going. We met with Rob Cohen today, and he's really jazzed to do it. So fingers crossed, God willing, we'll be shooting this summer and it'll be out in the summer of '08."

I enjoyed the first two.  I think Brendon Fraser is underrated.  I always like him in the films he does.

Thats good news. My wife will be very happy, as she is a big fan of the two Mummy Movies. I really enjoyed them as well, along with the Scorpion King.

The Mummy movies creeped me out!  They were cool, but I didn't want to see bugs for awhile.  :)

I don't think I let me kids ever see them.  Hmmmm.

The third one will be interesting.  They always kind of reminded me of Raiders of the Lost Ark.  Just a little. Oooh.. that mummy the first time we saw him on the screen... yuck!  What a killer job on the CGI.

Brendan Fraser Signs For Mummy 3

Brendan Fraser has closed a deal to return in The Mummy 3, but Rachel Weisz is not coming back, Variety reported.

Rob Cohen will direct the sequel, which is expected to begin production late in the summer. It will be set in China and will introduce Jet Li as a villain.

Universal is planning a summer 2008 release; the franchise has earned more than $830 million worldwide. The Mummy debuted in 1999 and The Mummy Returns in 2001.

Weisz has won an Oscar and had a baby since the last installment and has dropped out of talks to reprise her role.

The Mummy 3's script is by Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, who will do another pass that will factor in the absence of Weisz. Universal is holding up a green light pending a final rewrite, but a late summer start date is still expected.

I loved the first two movies....they were fun, which seems to be lacking lately in a lot of the stuff Hollywood is churning out.  Glad to hear that Brendan Fraser has signed on.

Both were good fun!  Looking forward to another.  Still hoping Ms. Weisz joins them.

Geekyfanboy

Yeah I was happy to hear that Frasier was coming back but I wish Weisz was coming back as well. I hope they don't kill her off or have them divorced.

jedijeff

It is to bad that she will not be in the next one, but maybe they will have a Father/Son type adventure. Jet Li as a villain sounds intriguing as well. Actually, I wish they would make another Scorpion King movie as well, as I really liked the Rock in that Movie.

Luke Ford Joins Mummy 3

Universal Pictures and director Rob Cohen have set Luke Ford to star in the third installment of The Mummy, in a move that potentially sets the franchise up for future films, Variety reported. The 26-year-old Australian actor was cast with the expectation that he will eventually carry the franchise.

Ford will play Alex O'Connell, the grown-up son of Brendan Fraser's Rick O'Connell and Rachel Weisz's Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell from the first two Mummy films. (Freddie Boath played the character as a boy in The Mummy Returns.) Alex journeys into the forbidden tombs of China and into the Himalayas, where he and Fraser's character run into a new shape-shifting mummy, a former Chinese emperor who was cursed by a female wizard. (Weisz declined to return for the third Mummy.)

Jet Li plays the mummy. Michelle Yeoh plays the wizard. The script was written by Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough. Shooting will begin in Montreal on July 27 and then move to China. The film is eyeing a July 2008 release date. Universal is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.

I like the Chinese angle for this movie, I think it will make it very interesting. Looking forward to it.

Darth Gaos

I agree.  This, on the surface, sounds like it has LOADS of potential.  I love their choice of Chinese actors as well.  Li and Yeoh are great.
