Was it just me, or was that one part taken straight from the “fall on your sword” scene in Flash Gordon?

Maybe so, but it seemed more blatant here. There was also the explicit Flash Gordon call out later on, which leads me to believe it was a deliberate homage. I might have squeed audibly at that point.
