I haven't read issue #700 yet, but I have a feeling I'm not going to be happy about all this.

ChrisMC

Me too. I have never been a fan whenever they try to majorly shake up Spidey. He's one of Marvel's "pure" characters like Superman to me. I liked his progression to an adult until they rebooted him. It sure reeks of controversy to sell books to me.

700 is an odd bird. It's both interesting and really really dumb.

If the comic shop still has one this weekend I may go ahead and buy it just because it's #700 and the last one. I have been reading Spiderman graphic novels, from the library, and I'm up to 'One More Day'. I started with 'Amazing Spiderman Vol. 1 Coming Home'. I will go ahead and read #700 though if I get one.

I picked up #700 this morning.   Pretty major change in the status quo.  In fact, the change is so big, I feel pretty certain it will be reversed at some point in the future.

Amazing Spider-Man is to Marvel what Superman is to DC.  Both companies have shaken things up with their A-List characters in the past, and they've always gone back to the way things were (more or less).  I think Superior Spider-Man will run for maybe 2 or 3 story arcs before it ends and is replaced with the return of Amazing Spider-Man, with a brand new seven-hundred and FIRST ISSUE promoted as a good "jumping-on" point for new readers.
So; Peter Parker is dead, and Doctor Doom has a change of heart and becomes the new Spider-Man?  If this doesn't get reversed before the end of the year, I'll be very surprised.
Got #700.  Read it - didn't like it.  Marvel has jumped the shark with Spidey as far as I'm concerned.  And he has always been my favorite comic book character.  Fix this Marvel - Now!

wraith1701

LOL They didn't just jump the shark, Rico.  They jumped the OCEAN.  :D   :P

ChrisMC

Yeah, I picked it up today. Pretty bad, almost like fan fiction. This is the best they came up with to launch their flagship character into Marvel NOW? I think they're drunk with the success of their movies over there.

There is a real obvious way to fix this...
Somehow Peter Parker's memories are still all in his body.  So I see some type of Doc Strange intervention to put Peter back in control of his body.  Maybe when Doc Ock's body died Peter's soul or spirit returned to his original body too.  All I can say is, they better fix this fast!  I have no interest in seeing Doc Ock makeout with Mary Jane.  Yuck!
wraith1701
Yeah, there are a ton of ways this can easily be fixed, and I'm sure it will be.  It's just a question of when.  I wonder how many Spider-Man fans are going to stick with this new series?  Will it attract new fans?  I've never been a hard-core Spider-Man reader myself.  My main exposure to him over the years has been through his inclusion in cross-over stories and "Event" stories.  I plan on checking out the first issue of Superior to see if Slott has some incredible story lined up to justify the change, but if it doesn't knock my socks off, I'm dropping it.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that what we see isn't what we get. Otto transferred his mind to Peter's body, not his soul. What we saw was Otto thinking he was Peter dying and Peter thinking he was Otto living. He has all of Peter and Otto's memories, but thinks that he's Otto. Even now, his instincts are showing up as Peter's instincts and he's doing things Peter would do without knowing it.

At some point the brainwashing will wear off and Peter will revert. Otherwise, this story is pretty dumb. Marvel has established that souls exist yet ignored all of that for this story.
So dumb.  This particular title has been in the toilet for years now.  I've much prefered Spidey as portrayed in the various Avengers titles than in his own flagship series.  I've no doubt that this "reboot" or whatever they're calling it won't last, just as I'm sure that this is a marketing ploy to try to draw readers into comic shops again since  they must be hurting at this time of year, with no major movies coming out for a while.  Honestly I dropped this title quite a while ago but have been keping tabs hoping it'll improve but all signs point to "no chance".

That makes perfect sense.  In fact, I'm convinced that's how this whole thing will play out.

It'll turn around.  Who knows; "Superior Spider-Man" might turn out to be an interesting experiment.  But even if it's well received, I'm certain the name-change will be dropped eventually.

I'm a big fan of the X-Men, and have been following the title "Uncanny X-Men" since the late 70's.  Marvel announced the cancellation of the series with Marvel: Now, and they did.  It turns out, the 'cancellation' is only temporary- the title will re-start later in January.  Same thing will happen with Amazing Spider-Man.  And Indestructible Hulk.

As long as there is a Marvel, Four titles will keep on keepin' on:  Uncanny X-Men, Amazing Spider-Man, and Fantastic Four, and The Incredible Hulk.

Aren't we all a bit tired of these events that are supposed to be far-reaching and shocking that get reset? Remember when Peter revealed his identity? Would have been interesting to see that play out a bit more and instead we got Brand New Day, to reset everything. Same will happen here.

I agree; most big events eventually get negated.  Right now, I'm looking forward to this happening with Spider-Man.  But overall, I'm actually pleased with AvX and what's happening with Marvel: NOW.  The shake-up has done great things for the X-Men & Avengers books.  All-New X-Men has been phenomenal.  Uncanny Avengers and the new iteration of the adjectiveless Avengers title have been very strong books.  Seriously; the last couple of months have had some of the best stuff I've seen in years.  :)
