"Next Issue" - magazines app/subscription
« on: July 10, 2012, 07:38:45 AM »
Looks like a new app wants to be the Hulu or Netflix for magazines on your iPad or other device.  $9.99 a month seems a bit steep to me, but I might get the 30 day free trial and give it test.

All-you-can-read magazine app Next Issue has made the leap to the iPad, where users can pay $9.99 per month for unlimited access to favorite periodicals.
Popularly referred to as the "Netflix/Hulu for magazines," Next Issue provides unlimited access to dozens of tiles, including Better Homes and Gardens, Esquire, Glamour, Entertainment Weekly, Fitness, and Condé Nast Traveler.
The available magazines are optimized for tablet displays, offering video and added content that you can't find in newsstands' print edition.
The "basic" plan provides 34 titles, including Car and Driver, ELLE, Fortune, Vanity Fair, GQ, Vogue, and Wired, for $9.99 a month. Shell out a few dollars more, and the $14.99 "premium" plan adds another five weekly titles: EW, People, Sports Illustrated, The New Yorker, and TIME.

Not a bad idea but I already have a hard time keeping up with my reading as it is so I'll have to pass. Now if Marvel/DC did something similar I'd be in like Flynn.

You and me both Joby.  I hope it's only a matter of time before one of the comic companies tries an all-access monthly pass system.  I'd love that!

That would be cool. As far as the mags go they probably wouldn't have the ones I like to read on it. Sci-Fi Magazine & Star Trek Magazine. I do catch Entertainment Weekly sometimes.

How much would you guys pay for full access to digital "read only" copies to all the Marvel or DC new releases?  I don't think I could pay more than $15 a month but possibly a little more.

Interesting idea but 9.99 US a month seems steep. You would have to read a lot of magazines to really get your value. and most of these look like mainstream mags with mainstream news that tends to repeat itself. I stopped buying most magazines because it was 50% ads. something you really wanted would be different. If I had a subscription app for all the SF/F magazines with serialized stories etc. that might be cool.

About $15 sounds about right to me per month.  I think they are missing the boat on doing this.  I'd love to see even someone like Image or IDW give it a whirl.  One thing I am liking as far as digital comics is if you wait a few weeks, $3.99 titles drop to $1.99.  Very nice at that price!

Marvel already do a pretty decent online digital subscription service but it's web / flash based so not very tablet friendly. If only they'd add it to their iPad app. They get enough requests!
