I have been hearing things here and there about this upcoming movie and I thought I would check it out more.

Here's the quick synopsis....

A fanciful and chilling story set against the backdrop of a fascist regime in 1944 rural Spain. The film centers on Ofelia, a lonely and dreamy child living with her mother and adoptive father; a military officer tasked with ridding the area of rebels. In her loneliness, Ofelia creates a world filled with fantastical creatures and secret destinies. With post-war repression at its height, Ofelia must come to terms with her world through a fable of her own creation.

You can check out both trailers here.

Review: Pan’s Labyrinth (No spoilers)

fauno.jpgIt had been some months since I went to the cinema but last weekend I couldn’t resist so I went to see the new Guillermo del Toro movie, Pan’s Labyrinth (original name: El Laberinto Del Fauno).

As I always do with movies I am very interested about, I didn’t even see pictures or read anything about the flick. So I sat there not sure what to expect and the movie simply blew my mind off.

Now I know this movie hasn’t opened in other countries other than Mexico and Spain so I won’t spoil it for you. All I can say is that Del Toro has created outstanding visuals and a very compelling story that made me roll a tear at the end.

Acting was fantastic and there’s a villian you will simply hate.

The story develops at the end of the Spain Civil War, just a few days after the Allies landed on Normandy to kick back the Nazi horde, in 1944. There’s this girl called Ofelia who can’t stop reading faery tales and fantasy books. Her life will be changed for ever, when she restores an ancient celtic sculpture.

From then on, the story gets only bigger and bigger.

The music is fantastic too. The audio is really good. But the story is what shines.

Guillermo Del Toro created a world full of wonder and fantasy that is worth the wait.

When the movie opens in more countries and more people had seen it, I will post a full review.

Pretty excited about this film as well.  I took this pic this morning in the metro on the way to the bank.  Look like its coming out here (Paris) on November 1st so its a little ahead of the US release date.  The caption at the top of the left translates loosely "The innocense is more strong than the bad / evil."  I may be off a little on that as my French is not that good yet but I thought some may enjoy seeing a pic of the movie poster from Paris.

Pan Wooed, Won King

Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro told SCI FI Wire that he hand-carried a copy of his movie to the Maine home of horrormeister Stephen King to screen it personally for the authorâ€"who returned the favor by naming it his favorite film of 2006. "Even now, when you say it, I get chills," del Toro said in an interview this week in Beverly Hills, Calif. "I do. I mean, ... Stephen King has been a huge influence."

In the Dec. 22 issue of Entertainment Weekly, King said that he was "seduced by [Pan's Labyrinth's] beauty and emotional ferocity. ... I think this extraordinary R-rated fairy tale for adults is the best fantasy film since The Wizard of Oz."

Behind King's review is a story of how del Toro, "like a Muslim going to Mecca," hand-toted two enormous film cans containing a print of his movie through three airports from Los Angeles to King's hometown in Maine. "And then I arrived to a theater that, technically, was very hard for me to go, 'Oh, this is the optimal screening,'" del Toro said. "And yet, to this day, it remains the best screening of my entire life. Because I was sitting next to Stephen King, and he was squirming during the impalement sequence, and I was like, 'It doesn't get better than this.'"

Del Toro added: "And then we went and had Indian food, and there's the receipt." He pointed to the restaurant receipt, pasted into the leather-bound sketchbook he carries with him at all times. "I had lamb curry. It was 08-05-'06. ... I feel like Forrest Gump." Pan's Labyrinth opens Dec. 29.

I am hoping I can find a theater nearby that will be showing this cool film next week.

Hey everyone I just got back from seeing Pan's Labyrinth.

Wow.. what a powerful movie, it's totally not what I expected. It's violent and beautiful, the harshness of reality during the Spanish War against the beauty of Ofilia's fantasy world is so intresting. Even the fairytale world is dark and disturbing. There is one scene in particular that just thinking about it gives me chills. The only complaint if you can call it that is having to remove your eyes from the beautiful fantasy world while reading the subtitles and just so everyone knows this is not a children's movie. If this movie is playing in your area, it's a must see. I went into this movie thinking it was going to be this "dark" fairytale but it's so much more.

Thanks for the great review and info Kenny.  I really want to see this but no place seems to be showing it yet near me.  I'll probably have to wait until it goes into wider release.

I finally got to see the movie this afternoon. I liked it a lot and would recommend seeing this film.

My son (Octeris here) and I just got back from seeing this movie (finally) tonight.  WOW!  As many have said, it's a powerful and amazing movie.  Dark, mysterious and enchanting all at the same time.  Sort of reminded me a little of the older movie "Labyrinth" but much darker and more adult I would say.  Being in Spanish didn't bother me at all.  Actually I thought it kind of made it more magical.  Definitely try and see this one the theater if you can.  We liked it a lot!   :metallica:

I didn't mind that it was in Spanish.. I agree it made it more magical but you want to enjoy the characters (AWESOME Makeup) and the beautiful fantasy setting but my eye kept being drawn to the texted when they would talk. This is a movie you have to see twice.. once to understand the story and what is going on and a second time just to enjoy the cinematography and beauty of it all.

I just saw this movie and agree that it is definitely one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.  The story is dark and very sad, but extremely satisfying in the end.  Tragic yet filled with hope and wonder, this is the kind of movie that fulfills on so many levels.  It should be coming out on DVD soon, definitely see this when you get the chance.
