Mazlan Othman, a Malaysian physicist, is being appointed by the United Nations to the post of ambassador to aliens, and will be the first person to officially hold talks with them. Or at least she'll be the first United Nations official to do so.

Mazlan Othman, the head of the UN's little-known Office for Outer Space Affairs (Unoosa), is to describe her potential new role next week at a scientific conference at the Royal Society's Kavli conference centre in Buckinghamshire.

She is scheduled to tell delegates that the recent discovery of hundreds of exo planets around other stars has made the detection of extraterrestrial life more likely than ever before – and that means the UN must be ready to coordinate humanity's response to any "first contact".

During a talk Othman gave recently to fellow scientists, she said: "The continued search for extraterrestrial communication, by several entities, sustains the hope that some day humankind will receive signals from extraterrestrials. "When we do, we should have in place a coordinated response that takes into account all the sensitivities related to the subject. The UN is a ready-made mechanism for such coordination."

LOL Rico; PLEASE don't start an intergalactic war!  :D

I immediately googled Mazlan Othman when I saw this post; now it seems the UN is being kinda evasive on the subject... http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/blog/2010/sep/27/un-alien-ambassador-mazlan-othman

I don't know if it's real or not, but it makes me wonder if the old sci-fi trope about the government knowing more about what's out there than it lets on to the public might be true.  ;)

the first day on the job as president must be interesting.... One day you're just some guy and the next you're privy to all the secret stuff - assuming the military will tell you :) but you gotta figure that if the big guy wakes up one morning and decides he wants a full tour of Area 51 they gotta give it to him, right?
