New 'Doctor Who' Spinoff Planned?
Comedian Lee Evans said to get his own UNIT series

The time of Russell T. Davies as the "Doctor Who" show runner is coming to an end. But before he goes, he has plans in motion to expand the franchise yet again, this time with a spinoff series dedicated to the newest of characters ... some of which have only been in the series for a cumulative 10 minutes.

At the center of this new series is leading UNIT technology expert Malcolm Tayor, otherwise known as stand-up comic Lee Evans, who made his Whovian debut in the recent Easter special, "Planet of the Dead." Joining him in his potential misadventures will be hardnosed Capt. Magambo (Noma Dumezweni), with whom he clashed with in the episode for not following UNIT protocol and helping the Doctor.

According to British tabloid The Sun, Davies was impressed with the performances of both characters and sees the duo as something of an odd-couple

"Lee and Noma are a spinoff series waiting to happen," he said. "UNIT soldiers often work best as half of a double-act, so Magambo needed a foil, though we never dreamed we'd get to cast the part so well."

If this plan is to go ahead, then this will be the third full series to be developed by Davies since "Doctor Who" was recommissioned in 2005. Following the success and popularity of Capt. Jack Harkness, "Torchwood" was introduced for a slightly more mature audience than your typical "Doctor Who" family viewer. And a second series following classic companion Sarah Jane has also been well received.

The main surprise to the news however is not that a third series is being considered but in fact that plans are already in motion ... and it could be ready before anyone thinks.

"The team is busy on more projects which might give an extra boost to 'Doctor Who' fans in the autumn," Davies cryptically said. "It's too early to reveal these plans."

"Doctor Who" currently is running a series of special episodes this year before eventually building to a climax with the regeneration of David Tennant into Matt Smith who will take The Doctor into its 11th incarnation.

"The Waters Of Mars," the next special, is set to premiere in the fall and is said to be amongst the scariest adventures the series has yet to produce.

Then, just in time for Christmas, the final two episodes will see a reunion with The Doctor's faithful companions (including Catherine Tate, Billie Piper and Freema Agyeman). And, according to the tabloid, the reunion will also include the notorious villain, The Master (played once again by John Simm).

No! I can't believe a Malcolm based spin off.

Surely not!

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

I liked Malcolm and i would love to see him again but not in a series of his own, it wont work. RTD is flogging this series to the bare bones. I cant see Evans wanting to be tied down for a series anyway.

Feathers

That's also true.

He's done one-offs in many things though hasn't he done at least one series of something (can't remember what since I wouldn't have watched it)?
