That's a great solution CJLP :)

I think if you have a spin-off thread then a link to the new thread should be provided within the thread that went off topic so those interested can continue the discussion in the new thread.

Hmmm seems a bit involved. As I have said before, I personally have no problem with threads going on for pages with just two people debating a topic. I enjoy them, think they add color to the community and should be allowed as long as the parties remain respectful. If anyone thinks they are pointless, that's just an opinion and they can not participate. Democracy at work! I think Rico and Kenny have been very even handed and inobtrusive as mod's and I applaud them for that. I think Rico's comment i nt his post is more his personal feeling as opposed to bord policy.  :)

What I have always found limiting with Forums was the ability to have sub threads under the main post. In the old Usenet days, a person could see multiple sub threads for a particular post depending on your news reader. Usually those sub threads were two people debating back and forth on a particular item. I wish that Forums gave that capability, but all the posts come one after the other. I know for myself, I see what Rico is saying, as a few times I have come into threads and wanted to add something, but I feel that I might be interupting the debate happening between a few people, and my comments might not fit what the thread has grown into, even though they relate to the original topic. Maybe like CJLP mentioned about starting a new topic. If people find that after a few exchanges between a small group of members, maybe the thread should be started in a new topic, and ask a moderator to move the other posts from the old topic into that new topic.

CJLP. Getting back on topic, I would suggest a lengthy read of posts before joining forums. This way, you can make out the rules as you go along. Enjoy the ride, post your opinion and try not to quote so many posts from other users, it tends to break up your arguments both good and bad.
Also, "back and forth" arguments are best left for the chatroom that Rico has set up. These arguments often become boring after one page. Lets leave the forum for intelligent discussion. :)

I concur. Post shredding, while an occasional necessity to "show your work" is just, well, largely annoying.

Also, try stating an opinion as just that by using keywords like "I think ..." or "maybe ..." or other terms that are not so absolutist.

In addition, smilies don't mean you are using sarcasm. They are there for punctuation, not as an excuse to be rude. Tone is very difficult to distinguish on a forum board sometimes, but when you always come across aggressively, no one is going to care if you have a hundred smilies - you are still being rude.

Thats right mate. Lets see if these aggressive posters are willing t express there views on a Skype cast. Its easy to upset people in type when meanings cannot be read accurately. I look forward to meeting some new members on the next get together.

Again guys, 99.999% of everything that has gone on in the boards has been great since I first set them up.  I love the community that is growing here and find everyone to be highly intelligent and interesting.  But since the question was brought up, I tried to answer things as best I could.  I think you will only find myself or Kenny or Jen in the RPG area on a rare occasion gently steering things back on course.  Hopefully that will take care of anything that might crop up.
