Just got back from this.  Really a very good movie.  The cast was excellent and it's fun to see a good, no-nonsense western again.  Jeff Bridges was great as Rooster.  Anyone that enjoys a good film should see this one.

So...does Jeff Bridges hold a candle to John Wayne? Them's some pretty big boots. :)

Great question! As far as acting goes, I prefer Bridges to Wayne. I think that Bridges has a much larger range in him. I'll let you know when I watch it.

I frankly didn't compare them as I was watching.  I love John Wayne films, but this film except for the basic story seems very different.  Seemed much more real to me.  And Bridges did a great job I thought.  One thing they all did well with in this was the dialogue was excellent.  They all speak a bit off and not modern in any way and it really makes it feel like you are seeing the old west.

I really enjoyed this! Didn't see the original, so I can't compare. From what I've read, this one follows the book more closely in the language and plot. Definitely very realistic!
The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

Again apologies for resurrecting an old topic, just got around to seeing this. Some very good performances, a tidy script, some beautiful scenery.  It all comes together and nearly makes this a great film, just at times feels a tad too polished, a bit too forced to push it to great status.  A solid 7.5 out of 10 and as I said, so nearly a great film.

I have a blurry recollection of watching the original, sat on my grandpa's lap, though Westerns were his genre, John Wayne his action hero, so it could have been a few films.

In my opinion, this is a remake that surpasses the original. And I love the original. But Jeff Bridges is just to great in this, and the Coen brothers were on their A game here.

It's a tough call for me.  I love the Duke so the original film holds a sweet spot for me, but this remake was really, really good.  Bridges was awesome!

I'd hazard to say it's a tie between Jeff Bridges and John Wayne. Granted, Hollywood movies have changed a lot in 40 years, but In their day they are both crotchety,  reprehensible, and reluctant heros.

The Coen Brother's are like Pixar, I've liked everything they've done except 'The Man Who Wasn't There' - meh.

All the edgy smarts of Tarantino's films without the violence.
