There's a possibility that the classic SciFi film Forbidden Planet will be remade.
J. Michael Staczynski will be behind the project and maybe James Cameron will come on board as well. There's even talk of it being a trilogy.

For those whom haven't seen the movie, check it out. It's classic SciFi at its best.

This has been knocking around Hollywood for several years as a possible remake.  I just love the original but I still wouldn't mind seeing a new take on it.  A true classic.

I will always love that film because of it's TOTALLY electronic score. It was made before there was anything like MOOG synthesizers. Another of Moog's earlier products was used though which was the Theremin. It is a instrument still seriously played today where you wave your arms in front of two antennas. One for pitch and one for volume. It may have been used in the original Trek Theme for the melody before they used the female singer. They also used a bank of old oscillators which they change pitch by hand alone along with ring modulators fed through old "spring" reverbs. I can't think of another totally electronic score made since as everyone thinks of this film when they do.

As much as I hate remakes of classic films (eg, The Day the Earth Stood Still) this film I would really be interested in seeing in an updated version.  A cameo by Leslie Neilson would be good!

Unfortunately usually when they do remakes of the classics, the classics still end up being better for some reason. I hope this is not the case with this, as this is one of my favorite movies, What is going on in hollywood with all the remakes, are they running out of new ideas.

Here's a neat remix of the original movie trailer with new music.

He would be a great Dr. Morpheus in any remake!

I just saw the Blu ray version of Forbidden Planet and it transfered well - you can even see Robby's cardboard legs as he is sitting at the pilots station in the last scene.

I got mine new for $6 + shipping from Amazon's list of new-used retailers.

After today's viewing I got to thinking...
JMS was just as inspired by Forbidden Planet as Gene Roddenberry.
Even JJ Abraham's in his Trek movie made Uhura a Phonologist like Morbius.
And although Roddenberry, being ahead of his time, couldn't be as cerebral with his version, he still borrowed plenty.

This may be a stretch but I'm thinking JMS on the other hand was able to more fully embrace the Shakespearian theme and possibly define his epic war of order vs. chaos - as Morbius discovered with his inner struggle of good and evil.

Now with talk of an eventual Forbidden Planet remake and and the trend for prequels and alternate universes (Trek 2.0), is it possible the Bellerphon had missed the 'No Trespassing' warnings and landed on Altar-4, the abandoned Krell (Vorlon) home-world?

Morbius had discovered at the time of their disappearance Krell / Vorlon had devoted all their resources to one goal and he warned that mankind was yet unfit to receive such knowledge.
He eventually found his own warning to be true.

Not saying this will be the rewrite, but it would help define the Krell in a pretty cool alternate universe prequel.
