This is a cool thing Blizzard is doing.  You can purchase a special in-game, Cenarion Hatchling pet for your WOW account and all the money goes to the Red Cross relief effort for Japan.  It's only $10, and if you play WOW already and want to make a Red Cross donation - this is a cool way to do it.  I'm in!

Out of interest, what does a pet do in the game? Does it follow you round or sit out of site somewhere? Can it be killed/run over/lost?

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

It basically just follows you around. I have a Cenarion Hatchling already, it used to be available only via loot card. I won one in a twitter draw from the Instance, it was quite rare. I'll give that up to help Japan! I have a feeling some others might not be so happy about it.

Most newer companion pets have a series of cute, special animations that make people laugh or serve as conversation pieces.  Very rarely they actually serve a function.  There's one that can be used as a cooking fire, which saves you some space in your bags as you would no longer need to carry around flint and wood to make a fire for levelling your cooking skill.  Otherwise they are just for show, and for achievement hounds.

My favorite companion pet that I have on my mage is the Kirin Tor Familiar.  To get that one you had to find and read a series of rare books that spawn around Dalaran for two minutes each like every six hours or so then despawn.  It was such a pain getting that, but seemed like such an achievement when I finally got him.  The prize is actually a book, which teleports you to a spire high above Dalaran where you meet with a mage who gives you the pet.

Do the two hatchlings look identical Joe?  It seems like they should have done some type of "Japan-esque" pet.  Maybe a little dragon or something.  But I'm still getting one of these.

Here's a screenshot I took when I first got him, they look pretty much the same to me.

This is pretty darn awesome!  Way to go Blizzard - and those that donated!!

Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of World of Warcraft players around the world who purchased the Cenarion Hatchling pet, we've raised a total of more than $1.9 million USD to support the ongoing earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan. In May, we announced that for every Cenarion Hatchling purchased by July 31, 2011, 100% of the $10 USD adoption fee would be going to assist victims of this disaster -- and the community responded by opening up their hearts and wallets wide. Thanks again for your support and for helping to make an impact on the lives of those affected by these events.
