Okay, so today is my wife's birthday and I had the brilliant idea of making her a cake. The only downside is that I don't bake. So I think about the cake and my initial concept is a four layered alternating yellow and chocolate cake with a white chocolate raspberry filling, a buttercream frosting, and all covered with multi colored fondant.

Then reality hit. There isn't any place close by to buy fondant and everyone is rushing for the coming blizzard. Bright idea #2 Make your own fondant, how hard could it be.

So I find some instructions and rush to the store.

Once there I think it's probably a good idea to see what the birthday girl wants to have. After a talk, the filling is substituted for more butter cream. The fact that I will need the mixer for both cake types, the butter cream, and the fondant quickly had me dropping the two cake flavors. So we're down to a four layer chocolate fudge cake with butter cream and a fondant cover.

Needless to say with four cakes in the oven and a pound of butter already in the mix, there won't be enough frosting for four layers, so I decide to go with two.

In the end, here is my final and first attempt at a chocolate cake with homemade butter cream and homemade frosting covered with homemade fondant. Now that I understand the process, the cake sponge will be from scratch the next time and I want brighter colors.

It wasn't as hard as it could have been, but it would have probably been better with the right tools. And yes, I know my piping work sucks!

LOL I was trying to design something and that's an easy pattern for someone that's never done it before. My wife did call it her X-men birthday cake. Oh and I steamed the fondant to give it that shine.

See what happens when you watch too much TLC.
