He's a blond interplanetary superhero known for his tight vest and for facing up to the evil Ming the Merciless.
And now Flash Gordon is set for a reboot after Twentieth Century Fox announced it has bought the rights to the original comic strip.
According to The Hollywood Reporter the team who have just completed writing Star Trek 3, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, are working on a new script.
Gordon's alive!: Sam Jones played the superhero on the big screen version of Flash Gordon in 1980

Flash was originally created as a comic strip in the 1930s by Alex Raymond.
The character was originally a polo player who is kidnapped, along with the beautiful Dale Arden, by mad scientist Dr. Zasrkov after a meteor storm hits earth.
Zasrkov and the duo travel in a rocket ship to the planet Mongo where they face its tyrannical ruler, Ming the Merciless.

In 1936 the comic spawned a science fiction serial starring Buster Crabbe as Flash, which told the character's story in 13 parts.
It was followed by two further serials, Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars in 1938 and Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe in 1940.
The Buster Crabbe versions' style and look were later used as the basis for the better known movie, Flash Gordon, starring Sam Jones as the hero and released in 1980.

The camp adventure boasted a cast including Melody Anderson as Dale, Max von Sydow as Ming, Timothy Dalton as Prince Barin and Brain Blessed in his most memorable movie role, as the bellowing Prince Vultan, who delivers the movie's most memorable line: 'Gordon's Alive.'
The film was soundtracked by Queen, with the title theme later included on their 1981 Greatest Hits album.
Sam reprised his role as Flash for a cameo appearance in Seth McFarlane's 2012 comedy movie Ted, as the Family Guy creator is a huge fan.
Explaining how he came to appear in the film, Sam told The Huffington Post: 'Seth called me and told me that he was a big fan. When he saw Flash Gordon, he was very young and it inspired him to do what he's doing now.
'And he wanted to know if I wanted to come on board on his film. I said, "Well, let's talk." So I went to L.A. and met with him ... and there it is!'

If they don't have this line in the new version (delivered perfectly by Timothy Dalton) then I'm out

Co-incidentally I've just recorded the 'classic' version to see what the kids make of it. Not sure how they'll take it, really. Good revision before a new one appears, though.

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

I have to have a Brian Blessed cameo in the reboot, or I am not going.  :)

I used to watch the old black & white Buster Crabbe versions when I was a kid (on Sunday morning) - they wouldn't be too bad if I got the rabbit ears on the old black & white TV just so..  ;)

Were they the ones with the sparklers stuck in the back of the rocket ships? If so, I vaguely remember seeing them over here for a period but not in any great detail. I used to love all that stuff :)

The same!  Wisps of smoke rising from the back of the space ships.  I used to love hearing the introduction music - Franz Liszt's 'Les Prelude' - some very stirring stuff!
