Title: The "Star Wars: Revisited" Project
Post by: Dangelus on September 11, 2011, 05:55:55 AM
I thought this deserved it's own thread because as a Star Wars fan I think this is an amazing project..

For those not aware of the Star Wars: Revisited  project is a fan production tweaking (and sometimes correcting) first the Star Wars original trilogy Special Edition movies and then later the prequels.

IMHO AdYwan (the editor) is a very talented guy and his changes and corrections are spot on, not change for change's sake. I am truly staggered this guy does this all on consumer equipment and succeeds where Lucasfilm can't seem to.

From the website:

"Star Wars Revisited is a fan edit project by a man called Adywan. It started around 2004, when Ady found himself displeased with what the Special Editions of Star Wars had become. He started color-correcting the DVD version, but as he was doing so, he found that there were many things he could figure out how to do to make what he felt the Special Editions should have been. He worked on A New Hope for two years before releasing it in 2008 with a new sound mix, new effects, new music, and hundreds of tiny tweaks.

After a short break, he started work on The Empire Strikes Back. Originally he planned for this one to be easy, but he kept finding more and more tweaks he could make to recreate how he remembered watching the film when it first came out. Besides removing the Special Edition scenes, he also wants to build models to reshoot some effects, build a full-sized Wampa puppet, and even has a team filming to replace some of the shots of Rebel soldiers on Hoth. ESBR will be released in 720p.

Once that is completed, he plans to move on to Return of the Jedi, also in 720p. Ady recently announced his intention to go back to A New Hope and recreate it in 720p before moving on to the prequels."

I've never heard about this project.  I can say that it looks better than the original.

Well, it's fine, but can't say I am overly impressed to be honest.

At least the movie is the correct colour now ;)

But....

I can't say I'm surprised this is your point of view although I would be interested in hearing you expand on it. The trailer doesn't really do it justice. Have you browsed the change list? If you watch the movie you probably would notice half of the fixes, many are very subtle. I would recommend looking at the visual comparison:

ESB: Revisited extended trailer - hopefully due around May 2012 :)

This is a slightly extended version of the FINAL trailer. Most the shots from the original have been replaced by their final versions, with their final colouring, FX etc, along with some brand new shots.

What I really like, Dan, are more the documentary project
s like Star Wars Begins. I was also not too keen on the additional effects in the trailer.

Yes those are amazing but for me it's nice to watch ANH with most if not all it's problems fixed and some of the Special Edition CGI toned down.

Hey, if we were all the same the world would be a boring place! :)

Yes I did get those. A few problems though:

Those discs are not great transfers. What they did was use transfers that were made in the early 1990s for the Laserdisc releases and literally nothing was done to them, instead of using the restored masters from the 1997 cleanup. I think Lucas even said that the original negatives no longer exist as all the special edition changes were pasted into them after they did the restoration, others say this is bull.

Because they were Laserdisc transfers they are also non-anamorphic, ie the movies are letterboxed in 4:3 so you lose resolution as the DVD player has to zoom it in to fill the screen (if you're watching in widescreen) as opposed to anamorphic where the picture is squeezed into a 4:3 frame and stretched out on 16:9 screens without losing resolution.

More ESB updates, work progressing nicely.

Soon there will be a watchable HD version of ESB finally! ;)

The thing I like about it is the small touches, the X-Wing getting destroyed in the escape and the jump to hyperspace, the door of the Hoth base changed to look more like eh set, and the bluish tint taken away. This guy is dedicated. I watched the first SW revisited and thought he made some pretty good changes and some "eh" one in others. Looking forward to watching this.

Gotta love this drawn-out version of the destruction of Alderaan.

This isn't actually in Star Wars Revisited. It was considered but he ended up going for the quick enhanced shot instead.

I just rewatched the ANH revisited...while some stuff was just added to be neat, I particularly like the fixing of continuity gaffes , like visual wires and crew, also altering things to fit with the rest of the saga, as simple as giving Vader the flashing lights on his chest like in ESB and ROTJ, and a new effect like giving the rebels the Death Star plans as shown in Episode 2. Pretty neat, and a heck of a lot of work.

Yep. A lot of work. Don't forget having Obi Wan cut off the correct arm!

Yes, and having Vader actually cut into Obi-Wan and not an empty robe...not that big a fan of using the prequel music in that fight though.

Yeah, the music I could have lived without but that scene was totally re-cut for pace and I do love the slicing at the end.

I did notice that the pace of the fight seemed better. Because most of us have seen the movies a million times small changes are noticed immediately...I just think most of his are pretty thoughtful and well done. The extending of the battle above the Death Star was pretty neat and upped the stakes some. The guy has some talent, he really should be working professionally if he's not already.
