CBS Releases official Star Trek PADD for iPad

press release

CBS INTERACTIVE LAUNCHES THE OFFICIAL "STAR TREK™ PADD APP" FOR iPAD

App Merges 24th Century Technology into 21st Century Mobile Device

SAN FRANCISCO – July 11, 2011 – CBS Interactive today announced the launch of the official STAR TREK PADD app, based on the iconic television franchise. The STAR TREK PADD (Personal Access Display Device) app provides fans with the ultimate mobile "Trekker" experience. The app features an authentic reproduction of the LCARS interface—the fictional computer operating system depicted in the STAR TREK television series—as well as a rich, interactive database of STAR TREK television series information, including images and an episode guide. The STAR TREK PADD app is now available for $4.99 in the App Store.

Developed in conjunction with CBS Mobile by app development studio ArcTouch, the STAR TREK PADD app transports fans back through the extensive 40-year history of the STAR TREK television franchise, including its amazing universe of characters, planets and technology spanning from STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES all the way to STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE. The app also includes a recognizable computer voice as well as familiar STAR TREK-related sounds.

"STAR TREK fans are passionately involved with all things STAR TREK. The STAR TREK PADD app lets die-hard fans and casual enthusiasts use the authentic LCARS interface to access the extensive official STAR TREK database, and easily connect with other Trekkers. We expect that the app will also introduce the show to a new generation of fans, leveraging 21st century technology to provide a glimpse into the 24th century," said Rob Gelick, Senior Vice President and General Manager, CBS Mobile.

The app includes the following features:

    * A rich LCARS graphical interface that provides an authentic and immersive experience, complete with STAR TREK-related sound effects and prompts from a recognizable computer voice.
    * An official database of STAR TREK information, including aliens, ships, places, and technologies as depicted in the STAR TREK television series, plus a detailed episode guide.
    * The official STAR TREK Facebook fan page and Twitter feed integrated into the app to let fans catch up on the latest news and connect with other Trekkers.

"Back when the PADD first appeared on STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, none of us imagined that today we'd be able to hold the real thing in our hands. But the STAR TREK PADD app, running on your iPad, is an actual miniature, handheld, touch-sensitive, 24th-century-style computer screen," said Michael Okuda, who was in charge of computer interface design for the Starships Enterprise and co-authored the STAR TREK Encyclopedia along with wife Denise.

"We're honored CBS chose us to develop the official STAR TREK PADD app," said Eric Shapiro, CEO of ArcTouch. "We're true STAR TREK fans and were intensely focused on making this app both useful and fun, while maintaining authenticity and reproducing the LCARS design faithfully."

The STAR TREK PADD app is now available for $4.99 from the iTunes App Store  for the iPad in every one of the more than 120 international markets where the show's five series are licensed.

So how does this work?  Is it an app than runs over the basic menu structure and allows you to access your other apps through an LCARS like interface?

No it has it's own content of library information as far as I can tell and access to the official Trek Twitter and Facebook feeds.

You'll have to Jailbreak your iPad for that sort of functionality.  Apple won't allow it in "Vanilla" iOS as it digs too deeply into their OS.

It's pretty cool.  They just need to tie it in with Memory-Alpha's website and it would be really incredible as a Trek database.  There's a fair amount of content right now.  Maybe they will add updates to it when they see how well it sells to us geeks!  :)

LOL!  I just got an email about this app two hours ago while I was out and about.  I started the download and by the time I got home, it was ready to run.  I ran it and FELL IN LOVE!  So I took a screenshot and jumped on the forum to talk about it and OF COURSE, you guys and gals already knew about it!

Man, it is hard to 'scoop' this group!

Btw, if you let your Padd app run idle for a bit, (not sure how long) it activates a "screen saver" mode.  How cool!

According to the app's first page, its pulling content from official sources including Memory Alpha.

Well if you guys keep singing it's praises I'm going to have to give this app a try.  From the description it doesn't really sound like something I would use very often though.  I wish Apple would allow more customization of the UI.

I'm surprised they even let them go as far as customizing the app without using standard controls :)

The Padd app is now the #3 top paid app in the App Store.  I'd say this is a runaway success!

Apple should really make a special iPad/Trek Padd version of the hardware/OS itself.  I'd pay extra for a regular, permanent Trek style, LCARS interface like Joby wants.

Update available!

You can now turn off some of the sounds like the background ship hum. I'm glad about this, feels a little more realistic now.

Yep.  Just got the update myself.

- You know another good app.  Something like a good Trek episode guide and/or Trek encyclopedia.  Obviously you can go to the web, but an App done in the LCARS format would be cool.

Someone did that once, I think, but didn't it get pulled because it was referencing out to startrek.com or something they hadn't licenced?

Yes there was an app that required you to download the whole database and I guess this was frowned upon. It a shame because something in this format with access to the entire Memory Alpha would be very useful.

With a property like "Star Trek" you can't just slap an App up and hope no one takes notice.  You have to go through the proper channels.  I don't think even if the App was 'free' it would stay up if it pulled much actual content down as needed from certain sites.  But I was hoping with the success of the Padd App, people would realize that us fans gobble this stuff up and it's worth doing.

This is it. A 3rd party can't make the app look Uthentic without running into copyright issues and you can't just download somebody else's entire database for your own use.

Hopefully CBS / Paramount or whoever will keep updating this app and giving us more and somebody will come along with a good 3rd party app that doesn't require the user to download half the Internet ;)

Yeah it would be great if Memory Alpha had an app like this, I find it an invaluable resource for Trek info.
