Hey guys,
I'm starting a podcast! ;D
It's called "Out Of Range" and it will be about, well pretty much anything I have an interest in, usually of the geeky variety. The title gives it a scifi and tech vibe which I'm sure will be a major part of the show as well as some comic book stuff, toys and kids TV I'm wanting to cover.
Thanks to those whose brains I've picked to get some advice, I'm sure I'll be calling on you again soon. ;)
The website is up and running although there's not much on it at the minute. You can find it here:
http://www.dangelus.com/outofrange/ (http://www.dangelus.com/outofrange/)
I'm not committing myself to a timescale for this podcast. I sure as heck can't do a weekly show (don't know how you manage it Rico and Rick!) but I want it to be regular as possible.
The first show will be an intro to the podcast (hopefully) closely followed by a show on the classic 80's Japanese TV show "Monkey!". American / Canadians probably won't have a clue about this as it was never broadcast over there but it should be very familiar to UK and Australian listeners. Comments welcome! ;)
This is a learning curve for me but I'm really excited about it. If anybody has any suggestions please get in touch, I need all the help I can get! ;)
Awesome! I was wondering what it was you were up to...
Very, Very cool!
Oh I meant to say,
If you're interested please follow the podcast on twitter @_out_of_range_

Sweetness. :)

Pilot episode of the podcast is up!
Just a little one (about 8 minutes) to introduce the show.
iTunes feed is being reviewed by the powers that be but hopefully it will be up soon. In the meantime just go to the website and play it from the podcast archive :)
I'd appreciate some feedback guys if you get the chance.
I'm excited! :)

Excellent! New stuff to listen to while I sweat!
Nice. In my humble opinion, there's one thing that makes a podcast enjoyable and that's the presenter being themselves. And you're certainly coming across that way. Your show sounds like a cross between Treks in Sci Fi, Waffle On and Just Because (and I don't mean that in a bad or complaining way). Well done and I'll be subscribing for sure! Al

Thanks Al,
I really appreciate the comments! To be compared to those is very flattering. I have a lot to learn and a lot to do with the first "proper" podcast coming up.
It's exciting stuff! :)
Just a sugestion, but if you'd like to talk about your new podcast to the Just Because listeners...to get the word out a bit, you're more than welcome on the show my friend! Just let me know.

Thanks. I would like to find my feet with the show and get a few under my belt, but yes that would be a great idea for the future! :)
You got it, just let me know when you're ready!
Subscribed via iTunes. I'll listen in the AM during the commute.
Added to Instacast without issue.
Well bang on first episode Dan. Nice intro sounds, good mix at the end with the fade in. You sounded clear (do you have a pop filter?) and well paced. Really looking forward to future episodes, old toys is a must and as we're similar age that's going to be awesome. And as for Monkey, consider a comment coming to you at the weekend.
Remember to get a promo out to us all here in podcast land and I'll put it in the next Waffle.

Ta for the feedback! I'm shocked how nice my mic came out, its just a standard USB headset, no pop filter. There's a little post processing involved to get rid of noise (I love Audacity!) but that's it.
Glad you like where im going with it. As I said, got a few ideas around toys / TV from my childhood and I'm really buzzed about it! :)
I'll get a promo done (and I'll collect a few for the show) after I've done "Monkey!" I think, then they'll have something to listen to if they subscribe lol.
Looking forward to hearing your comments. :)
Just listen to your premier episode. The audio quality is great.. looking forward to future podcasts. Never heard of Monkey.. looking forward to your next episode.
I subscribed and listened. AND I LOVE your music. NICE! Good Job Dan!
Oh forgot to mention, the music was very cool. :)

Thanks guys. All done by the magic of GarageBand, no talent needed whatsoever! ;)
Added it to my itunes account, so i should get automatic updates. You can certainly cover a lot of ground with anything Geeky. That should bring it to a wode audience. good luck for the future.
I may soon be the only one that just listens lol.
Listened yesterday.
It came across as very natural and well paced and of surprising audio quality (if that was just a headset mic). On that note, I might dare to say that I have heard other podcasts with a slightly better sound but the difference isn't significant enough to need any further action on your part (i.e. don't bother buying another mic!)
The general mix of content sounds interesting and while I probably don't need another podcast right now (time pressure!), I'm subscribing anyway :)
Actually, your voice is quite relaxing for some reason so I suspect that this will be an enjoyable listen.

Oh that's not true Dan. I have GarageBand as well, have NO musical talent and can't make my stuff sound THAT good! :)
Looking forward to my MacBook Pro so I can get in and fiddle with garageband myself :)

Next topic on Out Of Range: Monkey (aka Monkey Magic)
Quite a popular show in the UK and Australia in the early 1980's. If anybody has any memories of this show and would like to contribute an audio comment or email please send them along to podcast@dangelus.com
I'll probably be prepping this the tail end of this week or next week hoping to release by 17th July (fingers crossed) :)
When do you need a comment by Dan?

Early next week would be great :)
I used to watch this after school, whistling up his magic cloud.
My elder brothers preferred water magine.
Thanks for the email Colin! :)
Sent you a comment (actually its more of a ramble) sorry if its too late.

Awesome can't wait to listen :D
Just got into listening this but 'real work' has got in the way. Hopefully I'll get back to it this afternoon.
I'd forgotten what an impact Monkey had - the whole whistling for the cloud thing was all over the place for a while and everytime I see a quarterstaff it's still Monkey's expanding 'magic wand' that I think of.
I need to get back into recording podcast comments...
Still listening and finally! an explanation as to why I thought the priest was a girl!
The voice actors are surprisingly recognisable to me (now) since I'm a big fan of the Radio 4 dramatisation of The Lord of the Rings.
Glad you're getting something out of it Mike :)

Looking forward to listening to this one. :D
This is a topic I knew absolutely zero about so it's had some educational value :)
Never seen, heard or played with any of these things so it was all completely new. It's interesting the see the almost circular relationship between TV and toy companies played out so well.
Great podcast Dan, brilliant comments and you brought the memories flooding back. Great show.
New show out! A Geeky chat with Tim 'KingIsaacLinksr" Wetzel - "How Do You Consume Your Media?"
This time on the show I'm joined by Timothy Wetzel (KingIsaacLinksr) and we have fantastic geeky chat about today's entertainment world and the technology we use to consume and enhance it. Among other things we discuss:
Netflix Red Box, LoveFilm, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, TVCatchup, Vudu, Amazon and iTunes.
Devices, apps and multimedia software such as XBMC, Windows Media Center, Boxee, Apple TV and AirPlay.
Methods of watching and listening to your content such as Home Theatre PCs, dedicated devices and mobile devices.
Advertising and TV content, its relevance and how to avoid it.
3D movies
Music and podcasts and how to aggregate and consume them of various platforms including ditching iTunes using the Pocket Casts mobile app for iOS and Android, listing some of our favourite podcasts in the process.

I'd love to see some better streaming service over here but I'm slowly realising I'm probably not set up to handle it.
Thanks Mike.
I have high hopes for Netflix. They already have 2 exclusive deals in place so it seems they are trying really hard to give us a good experience.
Great cast Dan you and Tim could have talked a lot longer I think.
But it was very interesting and entertaining, I did not even notice the time zip by until you mentioned it at the end.

We may have to do another show at some point if there is demand. ;)

Guys I have been a little remiss on the social internet side the podcast front lately. Don't worry, I haven't given up just things have been a little up in the air lately.
I've not really made it public but some of you know that my wife Laura was recently made redundant from her job so understandably it has altered a few things while we get sorted for the future and made it a little difficult to focus etc.
The good news is that we think we have a plan for the future, trying to stay positive and on the podcast side I have been making a few changes.
I've started a new blog, YouTube channel (and later a podcast) called "TeknoCratik" (links in my sig) which will focus on digtal media, technology and my personal use of it. It won't cover all the news, there are far better sites out there doing that but it will cover my opinions on topical news if I have any. :)
"Out of Range" will carry on but will be a little more focussed on all things geek and be much less technical although there will occasionally be some crossover.
I am hoping to get the "Out of Range" recorded soon. This will be a with my wife covering the Rocky movies and focussing on Rocky IV. If anybody has anything they want answering, comments or memories of Rocky please send them in! :)
Thanks for the "poke of encouragement" guys! Glad you are missing the show if you know what I mean! Lol
Dan, what's your deadline for the Rocky comments? And, can I send audio? I've been a HUGE Rocky fan since 1976...truly.

Not set one yet Al, but we are going to try to record by the end of next week, so I guess I have set one lol!
Sorry about the mixed news but glad the podcast isn't a complete casualty. Do what you need to do - the joy of podcast subscriptions is that the audience will still be there when you get back in gear (unless you mess about with the hosting.:. Yes, Al, I'm referring to you! ;))
Dan I just watched Rocky 4. Hope Laura gets a new job soon. All the best mate.
Thanks guys :)
Ah....Rocky IV. The last time I attended a cinema screening that had whooping and hollering from the audience before, during and after the screening.....queues going down the road and a near stampede around the Odeon ticket booths. The surge of the crowd dragging us away from the cinema screens with our tickets in our tiny young hands.....luckily a police officer had noticed and pulled us back into the flow which was headed the right way....pulling a chain of us mere nippers along through the crowd.....Crowds so huge that Ambulances were on stand by to take away faintee's........Happy days!
They don't make 'em like that anymore. Or did the audience change?
That's a bummer dan, hope everything gets better soon :(

Well, I listened to the script one and this one today...most of my workday was spent in the BTTF universe. Great job, I hadn't really heard much about the original script. Now I have to watch those movies, it's been ages.
Really glad you enjoyed them :-)
Gareth and I are back once again to discuss another alternate "Back To The Future" script. This time we analyse the original concept script for Back To The Future Part II, written as a standalone sequel to the original movie. This is a fascinating story that differs in many ways to the finalised story that was eventually produced, including the fact that in this story Doc Brown and Marty travel back to 1967.
Enjoy!
