Title: MASH 4077 Podcast
Post by: Geekyfanboy on January 15, 2011, 01:52:50 PM
So Med, Al and I are starting up a new podcast about MASH.. I know it's not scifi or fantasy but I'm sure there are lots of MASH fans out there. Should be releasing out first episode in the month or so.

Check out the logo I made.. what do you think?

Love this show (or at least the earlier episodes..later years got too preachy for my tastes).  I think my favorite was the episode about spare ribs!  :)  I'll be sure to listen to this cast.  Thanks guys.

I will definitely be listening to this podcast!  My wife and I own the entire 10 seasons of MASH on DVD and we watch them regularly.  This will likely be my wife's entry into the world of podcasting as well as soon as I tell her the news.

Good luck!  ;D

Well then we have all 11.   :D

They are my wife's DVDs so I am not their caretaker but I know the last DVD has the final 'goodbye' episode on it.  We do not have any of the aftermash stuff.

Congrats on the new Podcast. I watched a lot of MASH when I was a kid, as they used to show it daily at 6:30 PM, so would always watch after supper. I think one of the funniest episodes to me, was the first season one, where Hawkeye and Trapper make up a fictional person to collect his pay. Then they have to kill him off, and everyone in the camp talks about how they knew him, even though he never existed.

I'll be listening, I loved that show, watched an hour of it five days a week in reruns when I was a kid, as well as the first run episodes near the end of its run.  I'll never forget the final episode and feeling like part of an event just by watching it.

Gotta hand it to the producers for making such a poignant and somewhat downbeat finale, a bold choice.

yeah that show got to be quite serious in its final seasons.  The whole subplot with Haweye on the bus was so disturbing, I'll never forget it.  I'm sure it will be discussed in the new podcast!

Yeah, the finale was a bit darker than most of the series, but I think it's because....well, I guess you'll all just have to tune in to find out why! :)

Just kidding...I think they wanted to portray some of the incredible horrors that most of the vets left that war with. Just my opinion...

Yeah, the finale was a bit darker than most of the series, but I think it's becauee...

There was a palpable change in tone to the show MASH that I think goes back to the end of the fourth season when Larry Gelbart left the series.  He was the driving creative force mostly responsible for adapting the book and movie for television, and his departure (coupled with Alan Alda's rocket ride to popularity and stardom) left the door open for Alda to take a much more involved role in the creative processes of the show.

I actually disagree. I think the show improved. I'll talk more about this on the podcast but when you watch every episode in quick succession (which I'm doing) you see a seriousness leak in with Alda's additions and the show went from being 80% comedy to a even break. When you read the books ( I've got three) the role of Hawkeye is not the early version in the tv series but quite like the latter version.

I never gave it a chance during reruns, but I was all of seven when it went off the air. I remember that it wasn't a kids show and I just didn't watch it. I've seen some episodes here and there and watched them through, but they weren't must see TV for me.

I didn't like it growing up, but once I got out of college I started watching again on reruns, and have to say, that it became quite important to me.  It's statement on the horrors of war, the men and women that are on the front lines and life in general was very revealing.

yeah I wasn't a huge fan, use to watch it here and there with my Dad, but when I meet Harry he was a HUGE fan and I purchased all the season box sets for him and over the years I have seen every episode and it's turned into one of my favorite non-scifi/fantasy show.

I was a fan from day one. Well for me it was 1983 and obviously on re-runs. In fact i seem to recall seeing the final first and then BBc re-ran the whole series. I loved everything about it and as i was i n the scouts i had army clothing so i used to have hawkeye written inink on my shirt lol. Silly, i mean look at me now, like i'd have a avatar name to do with MASH.... er oh right.

A good friend of mine back in the mid-80's used to alternate each year between a Gilligans Island Party, and a MASH party - he had the pyramid tent, and did the place up just like The Swamp.  You had to wear olive-drab fatigues.  Needless to say, these parties were the greatest.

Just listening to the first episode now and really enjoying it! You forgot Gary Burghoff was also in the movie. I was thinking about the relationship between Radar and Henry Blake and although I can see the father and son angle, I always looked at Radar as being Blake's caretaker. Henry didn't want to be in command, he was indecisive, usually deferred to Hawkeye and Trapper, and really just wanted to go fly fishing all day. Radar was his gal Friday, keeping him on track and the camp running. I hadn't thought of that relationship in so long!

Really looking forward to maybe a discussion of a point that was touched upon in the first 2 shows. Is MASH a comedy show or satire? Certainly the Altman film was pure satire. How did the series try and blend the comedic with that underlying premise? I think I feel an audio comment coming... :)

Here it is... Episode #5 - The Moose

Directed by Hy Averback
Written by Laurence Marks
Production code J305
Original air date October 15, 1972

Set during the Korean War in the 1950's

Sergeant Baker stops by the 4077th with his "moose"; a Korean girl named Young-Hi, whom he "bought" from her family for $500.00. Hawkeye Pierce is outraged and tries to convince Baker to let the girl go free. Eventually, he plays poker with Baker (and cheats with a little help from Radar.)  Baker agrees to trade Young-Hi for the debt he runs up. However, he explains to Young-Hi that she now belongs to Hawkeye, rather than that she is free (as was Pierce's intent). Pierce first attempts to get rid of Young-Hi by sending her on a truck to Seoul, but she gets off when the truck stops for gas and hitchhikes back to the 4077th.

Eventually Pierce, Jones and McIntyre decide to "demoosify" Young-Hi and teach her how to be a normal person. They soon meet the head of Young-Hi's family, and discover that he is Young-Hi's little brother Benny and that he immediately plans to sell her again. Initially, Young-Hi agrees with Benny out of loyalty to her family but then returns, having told Benny to "shove off".  In the end, Young-Hi is enrolled in convent school in Seoul. In the last scene of the episode, Pierce, McIntyre and Spearchucker Jones receive a letter from her.

Today we cover Episode #6 - Yankee Doodle Doctor

Directed by Lee Philips
Written by Laurence MarksProduction code J310
Original air date October 22, 1972

Set during the Korean War in the 1950's

Lieutenant Bricker is making a documentary about MASH units and General Clayton recommends the 4077th. Bricker wants one of the doctors to "star" in his documentary and Hawkeye Pierce agrees when faced with the possibility that the role could go to Frank Burns. The documentary is nothing more than overhyped propaganda. In the night, Pierce and McIntyre destroy the film by exposing it to light. After much convincing by Hawkeye and Trapper, Col. Blake allows them to remake the film, casting Hawkeye as a Groucho Marx-type doctor and Trapper as a Harpo Marx-esque surgeon. The crowd loves it, but Gen. Clayton is not impressed at first. After the film is over Clayton does find the ending exceptional.

Directed by Bruce Bilson

Written by Burt Styler

Production code J311

Original air date November 5th, 1972

Set during the Korean War in the 1950's

After an unusually long stretch in the OR, Hawkeye and Trapper argue, and decide that they need some R&R. Unfortunately, Henry is leaving for a few days, leaving Frank in charge. Hawkeye decides to pretend to be insane to try to get a few days off despite Frank's prejudice. He rejects a proposition from an attractive nurse, eats a plate of ostensibly human liver in full surgical garb, and reacts violently when Frank touches the plate. Trapper tells Frank that Hawkeye is losing it, and that he (Trapper) should take him to Tokyo for R&R. Uncertain about whether they are serious or if it is an elaborate act, Margaret calls in a psychiatrist friend, Capt. Philip Sherman, to assess Hawkeye's emotional state. After Hawkeye tells Sherman that he is in love with Frank, Sherman declares him to be insane. When Henry learns of Sherman's finding, he argues that Hawkeye was merely trying to get R&R, but Sherman insists that Hawkeye needs to be committed to a hospital in Tokyo.

Hawkeye, upon hearing this, confesses he simply wanted a holiday from the war, but Sherman, who has designs on Margaret, insists that he be sent for treatment. Hawkeye concocts with Radar an elaborate plan to make it appear that Sherman is trying to molest Margaret in her sleep. Their plan succeeds, Sherman is sent from the unit, and Hawkeye is allowed to stay

Today we cover Episode #8 - Cowboy

Directed by Don Weis
Written by Bob Klane
Production code J309
Original air date November 12th, 1972

Set during the Korean War in the 1950's

Plot Summary: "The Cowboy," a chopper pilot whose nickname stems from his gun holster belt and cowboy hat, arrives at the 4077th with a shoulder wound. He is anxiously awaiting a letter from his wife, who he fears is leaving him for another man ("She's probably off with some rodeo rider; she's a sucker for a 10-gallon hat!"). The Cowboy wants to be sent home before his marriage completely falls apart, but Henry refuses, stating that The Cowboy's wound is not serious enough to merit a stateside ticket.

Bad luck then follows Henry wherever he goes: he gets shot at while golfing, his tent gets flattened by a driverless jeep, and the latrine is blown up with him inside it. Deciding to leave camp for a while, he is nearly killed when his desk chair explodes. The Cowboy offers to fly Henry to Seoul, then tries to push him out of the chopper in midair. At the same time, Hawkeye and Trapper realize that these "accidents" have been The Cowboy's attempts to get revenge against Henry for not sending him home.

Radar brings the letter from The Cowboy's wife, and Hawkeye and Trapper inform him over the radio that it has finally arrived. The letter is postmarked Reno, Nevada, which sends the two doctors into a panic, given Reno's reputation (at the time) for quick and painless divorce proceedings. The letter also begins "Dear John," the clichéd opening of a letter to a man whose heart is about to be broken. It turns out, however, that The Cowboy's real name is John Hodges and that he does live in Reno. In the letter, his wife assures him that he is loved. He brings Henry safely back to camp and receives a month's stateside leave.

Hope you enjoy it,

Hey!

Just started listening and I think it's great. I love that you discuss the episodes and that you play clips throughout as you talk about each one. I grew up watching MASH too and I love Alan Alda. Hawkeye was such a lady's man and very funny too! I thought it was very interesting when they had Alan Alda on ER playing a visiting doctor. Of course his character wasn't Hawkeye but it was great to see him as a doctor again.

Good luck with the podcast!

I was just thinking how Star Trek and MASH are alike. Well for one thing, they both had a lot of guest star appearances from other tv show actors/actresses. Even Winchester was on ST:TNG. That was a great episode where Lwaxanna debates with him about what happens as we get older. It was a very controversial episode. The episode is called "Half a Life." There were quite a few other actors that made appearances on both shows though which was really cool to see from time to time.

Love the new logo... but where's Harry? I was getting used to hearing him on as a special guest. Guess I thought he was just going to become a regular podcast host.

On one of the podcasts, Meds was talking about Margaret liking Generals because they remind her of her father. Well that's not Freudian but it is related to the Oedipal Complex (boys in love with their mothers). Margaret having relationships with older men reminding them of her father would be the Electra Complex (girls in love with their father) which Carl Jung (a student of Freud) came up with. So you can take it either way I guess. I was a psych major at Keene State. So it would be Jungian.

Sorry to be so picky!  :P

Well we use Skype to talk to each other and Kenny records the skype call using pamela as a back up. What we do at the same time is record our own vocal track using either audacity or garage band and then send them to Kenny who mixes all the tracks together top create the podcast. Its a lot of hard work for him and I am always amazed how great it sounds so kudo's to Kenny.

That's interesting, what about the parts where somebody talks over somebody else? I'm sure that happens, like when you guys have chuckle, but I haven't noticed any distortion. Great editing I suppose.

Well we do a count down at the beginning of the recording so we get a clap start. That way all vocal tracks should align. All three tracks are put into the programme and then mixed together so we all should sound like we are together. :D

Thanks.. and yes Harry is just a guest host.. he'll be in a few more.. we also have Al's wife Joyce joins us for a few as well.

Yes it's a ton of work but it sounds great. I use Avid and laid down two tracks per person. So Harry and I are on track 1 & 2, Meds is on track 3 & 4 and Al is on track 5 & 6.

I sync them up and then go through and remove anything that over laps.. who ever the dominating voice is get the air and the other I pull out. So if Meds and I start talking at the same time.. one of use will stop because we hear the other and they other one will continue.. I'll just pull out the person who started talking at the same time so you just hear the one person.. it's a lot of work.. but I think it sounds great.

Today we cover Episode #10 - I Hate a Mystery

Directed by Hy Averback
Written by Hal Dressner
Production code J306
Original air date November 26, 1972

Plot Summary: A rash of thefts breaks out in the camp. Missing pieces include Frank's silver picture frame, Margaret's hair brush, and Trapper's watch. The camp is searched and everything is found in Hawkeye's locker, leaving the other MASH personnel suspicious of and, worse, disappointed in Hawkeye. Hawkeye manages to let it be known to the camp where the recovered items have been stored (they have been locked in Col. Blake's desk). When the items disappear yet again, Hawkeye summons many of the MASH personnel to the mess tent in the middle of the night in order to reveal the identity of the criminal. After parodying countless detective stories by revealing possible motives others might have to frame him (jealousy, resentment, etc.), he tells the assembled staff that he has treated the items with a chemical which, when it comes into contact with a human being, turns that person's fingernails blue. When Ho-Jon hides his hands, Hawkeye knows he has found the criminal. (The chemical treatment story was merely a bluff.) Ho-Jon is not punished, however, as he has stolen the items only to raise money to bribe border guards to bring his family from the north to the south.

Hope you enjoy it,

Download from itunes http://tinyurl.com/MASH4077itunes (http://tinyurl.com/MASH4077itunes) listen/direct download http://bit.ly/eXCRxT (http://bit.ly/eXCRxT)

Here is another SwampCast... #3, a SwampCast is a non-regular show.. meaning we will not be reviewing an episode in this podcast. These SwampCasts will come out now and then and cover "cast" interview, or listener feedback or anything else that we want to share with the listeners that doesn't fit into our regular show review episodes.

Our third SwampCast once again covers Listener Feedback. We also go over our trivia and answers from episodes 5 - 9 and give one lucky listener a MASH 4077 T-shirt.

Hope you enjoy it,

Today we cover Season 1, Episode #16 -The Ringbanger
Directed by Jackie Cooper
Written by Jerry Mayer
Production code J316
Original air date January 21, 1973

Set during the Korean War in the 1950's

Plot Summary: Hawkeye and Trapper conspire to take down a colonel who has accumulated twice as many casualties while only gaining as much as half of the ground, marking the first of several such attempts from Hawkeye. In an effort to achieve this, they convince him that Frank Burns is a crossdresser and that Henry Blake is an alcoholic who is having a sordid affair with the promiscuous Margaret Houlihan. These stories achieve the purpose of rendering Hawkeye and Trapper the only two people in camp Buzz can be sure are trustworthy. A little manipulation and some conveniently timed events add some apparent proof to these claims. For example, when Buzz is drinking with them in the Swamp, they leave a pair of gold high heeled shoes by Frank's bed. Later, Frank tries to check Buzz's leg to see if it is healing properly, and he is rebuffed by Buzz, who suspects that he has romantic or sexual intentions. When Margaret becomes suspicious, Hawkeye and Trapper tell her that Buzz is suffering from low self-esteem and heavily imply that he needs intimate contact with a woman to prove that he is still a man. While he is alone with Margaret, they get Henry Blake very drunk and give him a pistol (telling him that he needs to undertake an arms proficiency test) and arrange for him to walk in on the two of them and encourage an angry, drunken response.

Throughout the episode, they undertake more subtle measures to try to convince him that, among these people he cannot trust, he is going mad. Such measures include switching his tent, leaving him confused about whether it has been there the whole time, and telling him to drink his glass of milk that he so fervently asked for, despite his never having asked for a glass of milk. At the end, convinced that there must be something wrong with him, Buzz is shipped back stateside.

Hope you enjoy it,

Today we cover Season 1, Episode #17 - Sometimes You Hear the Bullet
Directed by William Wiard
Written by Carl Kleinschmitt
Production code J318
Original air date January 28, 1973

Set during the Korean War in the 1950's

Plot Summary: Hawkeye's old friend Tommy appears at the 4077th. He is a soldier working on a book about life on the front lines called "You Never Hear the Bullet." The book is intended to show how death in battle can be sudden and not surrounded by any prior drama, as it often is in the movies. Later in the episode, Tommy himself shows up as a casualty on the operating table, having been shot by the enemy on the front lines. Just before being anesthetized, he weakly tells Hawkeye that he in fact had heard a bullet ricochet just before being hit, just like in the movies. Hawkeye, close to tears, suggests that "Sometimes You Hear the Bullet" is a better title anyway. Tommy dies moments later. Later we see Hawkeye crying and Lt. Col. Blake trying to console him.

In the same episode, a young soldier is discovered to be underage and using his brother's ID. He has come to Korea in order to impress his girlfriend. Hawkeye first gives the young soldier some sage advice about women and then essentially lets him decide for himself whether he wants to go back to the States or stay in Korea. After losing Tommy, however, Hawkeye immediately reports the young soldier to the MPs, sending him back to America and to safety—with the Purple Heart Frank Burns put in for after his back pain.

Hope you enjoy it,

Directed by William Wiard
Written by Alan Alda
Production code J319
Original air date February 18, 1973

Set during the Korean War in the 1950's

Plot Summary: In the middle of a cold snap, Hawkeye receives a pair of longjohns from home. Hawkeye gives them to an ill Trapper out of sympathy and Trapper loses them to Radar in a poker game. The longjohns proceed to pass through the hands of almost everyone in the camp: Radar gives them to the cook in exchange for a whole lamb roast with mint jelly, and the cook bribes Frank with them to avoid being demoted because of the unsanitary conditions of the kitchen. Frank gives the longjohns to an intimidating Margaret as a sign of devotion to her, before Klinger steals the longjohns from Margaret's tent. A remorseful Klinger then gives the longjohns to Father Mulcahy, who in turn gives them to Henry (but not until after he spends the night wearing them). Henry claims he will return the longjohns to their rightful owner, but gets caught putting them on by Hawkeye and Trapper. Henry rebuffs Hawkeye's demand that the longjohns  be returned, but later gives them back to Hawkeye in gratitude for saving his life via an  appendectomy.

I'm watching the old shows now in preperation for your podcast.  I can't wait! Wish I could help.  If you need any episodes just let me know.  BTW I don't think you should go in order with the MASH podcast.  Just skip around to the episodes you like most.  You could spend years doing that podcast.  If you need a fill in maybe I can help.  Anyway I can't wait to here your thoughts on Alien Nation!(I love that you use clips from the show in your podcast)

Cheers JT. Fr my point of view I live doing the shows in order, yes it's goi g to take time but as we record 6 episodes in a row for us its easy to do ( well not for kenny he has to produce it). Plus we're recording Mash series 2 soon so we only into ten remaining series so it wont take that long. Plus as a bonus i could record with Kenny & Al all day long its way to much fun ropping into each other.

We do a swamp cast everynow and again so please, JT send us a email & we'll read it out. :)

Set during the Korean War in the 1950's

Plot Summary: On the day of the Army/Navy game, the unit finds itself under enemy attack. In addition to injury and some mild damage, they discover an undetonated bomb in the center of the camp. In order to defuse the bomb the characters are forced to deal with a variety of "joker"s from different branches of the military making suggestions about how to deal with the deadly missile. In a variety of scenes some of the characters act as if this is their last day on earth. Eventually the Navy calls back claiming the bomb belongs to the CIA. Hawkeye and Trapper are sent out to defuse the bomb with Henry reading instructions from a bunker. Due to a mix-up between Henry and Trapper they accidentally set off the bomb. As it turns out, all it does is fire propaganda leaflets into the air. The episode ends with Father Mulcahy winning the football pool, being the only person who bet on the Navy.

Directed by Don Weis
Written by Richard Baer
Production code J321
Original air date March 4, 1973

Set during the Korean War in the 1950's

Plot Summary: The episode opens in a poker game. When it's interrupted by surgery, Hawkeye and Margaret operate on a patient and the former insults Frank. However, Hawkeye's patient fails to improve after surgery. Hawkeye becomes overly concerned with the case, to the point of attacking Frank over comments at lunch, falling asleep in Post-Op, snapping at Trapper for playing poker too loudly, and moving out of the Swamp to the supply tent. While Hawkeye retreats to the Supply Tent to reflect on the case, he is interrupted by his date (whom he turns away), Trapper (whom he turns away as well), two other soldiers, and Henry. Henry implies that Hawkeye is concerned more about his ego than about his patient. Hawkeye returns with a glib remark about Henry's intelligence, which ultimately insults Henry and allows Hawkeye some peace and quiet. While pondering the case outside the Supply Tent, Hawkeye encounters Margaret and she theorizes that they made a mistake in the surgery, eliciting extreme doubt from Hawkeye, who in turn insults her. During the night, Hawkeye has an epiphany and reopens the patient to find a small piece of shrapnel damage behind the sigmoid colon, at which point Frank states, "Anybody could have missed that."Hawkeye responds with a sincere "Thanks, Frank."

A sad day for MASH fans.

Pulled this story from the LA Times, you can read the original story http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/08/arts/television/harry-morgan-mash-and-dragnet-actor-dies-at-96.html?_r=1&hpw (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/08/arts/television/harry-morgan-mash-and-dragnet-actor-dies-at-96.html?_r=1&hpw)

Harry Morgan, the prolific character actor best known for playing the acerbic but kindly Colonel Potter in the long-running television series "M*A*S*H," died Wednesday morning at his home in Los Angeles. He was 96. His son Charles confirmed his death.

In more than 100 movies, Mr. Morgan played Western bad guys, characters with names like Rocky and Shorty, loyal sidekicks, judges, sheriffs, soldiers, thugs and police chiefs.

On television, he played Officer Bill Gannon with a phlegmatic but light touch to Jack Webb's always-by-the-book Sgt. Joe Friday in the updated "Dragnet," from 1967 to 1970. He starred as Pete Porter, a harried husband, in the situation comedy "Pete and Gladys" (1960-62), reprising a role he had played on "December Bride" (1954-59). He was also a regular on "The Richard Boone Show" (1963-64), "Kentucky Jones" (1964-65), "The D.A." (1971-72), "Hec Ramsey" (1972-74) and "Blacke's Magic" (1986).

But to many fans he was first and foremost Col. Sherman T. Potter, commander of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital unit in Korea. With a wry smile, flat voice and sharp humor, Mr. Morgan played Colonel Potter from 1975 to 1983, when "M*A*S*H" went off the air. He replaced McLean Stevenson, who had quit the series, moving into the role on the strength of his performance as a crazed major general in an early episode.

In an interview for the Archive of American Television, Mr. Morgan said of his "M*A*S*H" character: "He was firm. He was a good officer and he had a good sense of humor. I think it's the best part I ever had." Colonel Potter's office had several personal touches. The picture on his desk was of Mr. Morgan's wife, Eileen Detchon. To relax, the colonel liked to paint and look after his horse, Sophie — a sort of inside joke, since the real Harry Morgan raised quarter horses on a ranch in Santa Rosa. Sophie, to whom Colonel Potter says goodbye in the final episode, was Mr. Morgan's own horse.

In 1980 his Colonel Potter earned him an Emmy Award as best supporting actor in a comedy series. During the shooting of the series' final episode, he was asked about his feelings. "Sadness and an aching heart," he replied

After moving to California in 1942, he was spotted by a talent scout in a Santa Barbara stock company's production of William Saroyan's one-act play "Hello Out There." Signing a contract with 20th Century Fox, he originally used the screen name Henry Morgan, but changed Henry to Harry in the 1950s to avoid confusion with the radio and television humorist Henry Morgan.

Mr. Morgan attracted attention almost immediately. In "The Ox-Bow Incident" (1943), which starred Henry Fonda, he was praised for his portrayal of a drifter caught up in a lynching in a Western town. Reviewing "A Bell for Adano" (1945), based on John Hersey's novel about the Army in a liberated Italian town, Bosley Crowther wrote in The New York Times that Mr. Morgan was "crude and amusing as the captain of M.P.'s."

He went on to appear in "All My Sons" (1948), based on the Arthur Miller play, with Edward G. Robinson and Burt Lancaster; "The Big Clock" (1948), in which he played a silent, menacing bodyguard to Charles Laughton; "Yellow Sky" (1949), with Gregory Peck and Anne Baxter; and the critically praised western "High Noon" (1952), with Gary Cooper. Among his other notable films were "The Teahouse of the August Moon" (1956), with Marlon Brando and Glenn Ford, and "Inherit the Wind" (1960), with Spencer Tracy and Fredric March, in which he played a small-town Tennessee judge hearing arguments about evolution in the fictionalized version of the Scopes "monkey trial." In "How the West Was Won" (1962), he played Gen. Ulysses S. Grant.

After a personable performance as Glenn Miller's pianist, Chummy MacGregor, in "The Glenn Miller Story" (1954), starring James Stewart, he often played softer characters as well as his trademark hard-bitten tough guys. There were eventually a number of comedies on his résumé, among them "John Goldfarb, Please Come Home" (1965), with Shirley MacLaine and Peter Ustinov; "The Flim-Flam Man" (1967), with George C. Scott; "Support Your Local Sheriff!" (1969), with James Garner and Walter Brennan; and "The Apple Dumpling Gang" (1975), a Disney movie with Tim Conway and Don Knotts.

He returned as Bill Gannon, by now promoted to captain, in the 1987 movie "Dragnet," a comedy remake of the series starring Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks.

Mr. Morgan's television credits were prodigious. He once estimated that in one show or another, he was seen in prime time for 35 straight years. Regarded as one of the busiest actors in the medium, he had continuing roles in at least 10 series, which, combined with his guest appearances, amounted to hundreds of episodes. He reprised the role of Sherman Potter in "AfterMASH" (1983-85), a short-lived spinoff.

Among the later shows on which he appeared as a guest star were "The Love Boat, " "3rd Rock From the Sun," "You Can't Take It With You," "Murder, She Wrote" and "The Jeff Foxworthy Show."

Mr. Morgan's first wife, Eileen Detchon, died in 1985 after 45 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Bushman, whom he married in 1986; three sons from his first marriage, Christopher, Charles and Paul; and eight grandchildren. A fourth son, Daniel, died in 1989. Mr. Morgan lived in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles.

His son Charles, a lawyer in Los Angeles, said in a telephone interview that he would marvel at his father's photographic memory. "My dad would read a script the way somebody else would read Time magazine and put it down and be on the set the next day," he said.

But Harry Morgan never sat as a guest on a talk show, Charles Morgan said ; it did not seem appropriate or necessary. "Appearing on a talk show to focus on himself because he was Harry Morgan," he said, "was not nearly as natural as appearing in a role as Pete Porter or Bill Gannon or Colonel Potter, or as the cowboy drifter who wandered into town with Henry Fonda and got wrapped up in a vigilante brigade in 'Ox-Bow Incident.' "

Hey!

I so look forward to listening to the fourth swamp cast. I was wondering when you guys were going to do another one. I'm really glad that you're paying tribute to Harry Morgan. He was awesome!

Z, we recorded the first 6 of season 2 yesterday, so Kenny is feverishly (literally, I think he has the flu or something! :) ) on the edits. Although he does have a BIG job of editing ahead of him since Meds totally flubbed every line. In fact, he was so bad, Kenny and I have talked about bringing Yoko Ono in to replace him! :)

Today we cover Season 1, Episode #24 - Showtime
Directed by Jackie Cooper
Written by Larry Gelbart
Production code J324
Original air date March 25, 1973

Set during the Korean War in the 1950's

Plot Summary: A USO stand-up comic performs at the 4077th, and the performance is juxtaposed with clips containing the following: Henry's wife back home gives birth to a son and the camp's dentist receives his discharge papers and takes great pains to make sure he does not get injured before he sets off for home. Major Burns actually gets the upper hand over Hawkeye with three practical jokes. The first is when he sabotages the still, causing it to spray Hawkeye in the face with gin. The second involves the classic 'bucket-over-the-door' gag. The third and arguably craftier joke has Hawkeye attempting to use the shower, but is annoyed to learn that Frank has switched the showerheads to spray alternately whenever Pierce tries to use it.

Hope you enjoy it,

Just listened to the latest today.  Great job  Kenny, Meds, and Al! I agree with Kenny, the Potter years are best, but this; the final episode of season one was a pretty grand show.  I wonder if I would find the comedian humorous if I was watching it in the 70s. :andorian

Today we cover Season 2, Episode #2 - 5 O'Clock Charlie
26th Episode Overall
Directed by Norman Tokar
Written by Larry Gelbart, Keith Walker & Laurence Marks
Production code K403
Original air date September 22, 1973

Set during the Korean War in the 1950's

Plot Summary: For six weeks, an ammunition depot near the camp has been the target of a punctual but inept North Korean bomber pilot. Every day at 5:00 he flies overhead and attempts to hit the depot with a single hand-thrown bomb. The pilot, nicknamed "5 O'Clock Charlie," has been so reliably unsuccessful that the denizens of the 4077th have begun a betting pool based on how far away from the target his bomb will land. Only Frank and Margaret regard "Charlie" as a serious threat. Frank requests an anti-aircraft gun, and Brigadier General Crandall Clayton comes to the camp to assess the situation. Clayton, who has placed the ammo dump near the hospital so that the enemy will leave it alone (a tactic he says he learned from the Germans), is initially skeptical of the need for a gun; on the next raid, though, Charlie destroys not the ammo dump but Gen. Clayton's jeep. He agrees to send the gun, and Frank takes charge of it.

Hawkeye and Trapper argue that the presence of the anti-aircraft gun will attract more competent bombers, noting that "fire draws fire," but Frank is more interested in drilling his "platoon" of three Korean soldiers. Eventually, Hawkeye, Trapper and Cardozo conclude that the problem is not the gun, but the ammo dump. They dye sheets and place them on the ammo dump to help Charlie find his target. When Charlie makes his next pass, Hawkeye and Trapper confuse Frank's men into aiming the gun directly at the ammo dump. Charlie misses his target yet again, but when Frank orders his troops to fire the gun, they hit the ammo dump, destroying it

Today we cover Season 2, Episode #3 - Radar's Report

27th Episode Overall

Directed by Jackie Cooper
Written by Sheldon Keller & Laurence Marks
Production code K402
Original air date September 29, 1973

Set during the Korean War in the 1950's

Plot Summary: This episode is told as a voice-over of Radar reading a report as he is typing it. Comically, it includes where he puts punctuation and how he spaces the report. In each scene of the episode, the viewer hears the actual scene as well as the report that Radar is making. An enemy prisoner who is being treated in the OR grabs a scalpel and attacks a nurse and a patient of Trapper's before being subdued by Hawkeye. When Trapper's patient subsequently dies, Trapper is furious at the enemy soldier, and considers killing him by removing his IV; however, Hawkeye talks him down.Hawkeye, meanwhile, has fallen head over heels in love with a new nurse, Lt. Erika Johnson. Although he is temporarily deterred by seeing a wedding ring on her hand, he is happy to discover that the ring is merely a shield against unwanted advances. Hawkeye is prepared to propose to the nurse, but she is not interested in a long-term relationship and is shipped out to Tokyo.

After Frank mistakes Klinger for Margaret, the two majors decide to get rid of Klinger. They convince Col. Blake to have Klinger undergo a psychiatric evaluation. Dr. Milton Freedman, an Army psychiatrist, interviews Klinger, and tells him that although he believes Klinger to be sane, he is willing to grant him a Section 8 discharge if he will sign a report confirming that he is a transvestite and a homosexual (a report which Freedman notes will follow him into civilian life). Insisting that he is neither ("I'm just crazy!"), Klinger refuses to sign, and Freedman files a report saying that Klinger is sane

Great epsiode guys! Just absorbed it today while working.  Thanks for making my day a whole lot more entertaining!  This was always one of my favorite MASH episodes, and while I do agree that Hawkeye was out-of-character in a big way, talking about marriage and whatnot.  I actually think it was set up that way.  Hawkeye was always sinical about marriage and codependence, and I think in this episode he learned what really falling in love was, and what it was to want a future with someone.  Hawkeye, like all of us wanted most what he couldn't have.  Fantastic poscast boys! keep it up.

We normally release a "regular" episode reviewing an episode of MASH, unfortunately we will not be releasing one today (May 1st) instead we bring you a fun Swampcast.

A SwampCast is a non-regular show.. meaning we will not be reviewing an episode during this podcast. These SwampCasts will come out now and then and cover "cast" interview, or listener feedback or anything else that we want to share with the listeners that doesn't fit into our regular show review episodes.

Our 5th SwampCast is about Trivia. Each episode we ask our listeners a trivia question. On this Swampcast we Ask and Answer all trivia questions from Episodes 10 - 30. Every listener who sent in a correct answer will get their name put into a hat and we will reveal at the end of the podcast the 5, yes 5 lucky listeners who will win a MASH 4077 Podcast T-shirt.

Hope you enjoy Swampcast #5 and remember a new "regular" episode of MASH 4077 Podcast will be released on May 15th.

We hope you enjoy it,

32nd Episode Overall

Directed by  Don Weis
Written by McLean Stevenson, Larry Gelbart, Laurence Marks
Production code K408
Original air date November 3, 1973

Set during the Korean War in the 1950's

Plot Summary: Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake faces a disciplinary review after several complaints from Majors Burns and Houlihan. Among the issues at hand are the 4077th's Kentucky Derby Day, in which the doctors raced around the compound pushing nurses on gurneys; allowing Radar to sell wing-tip shoes tent-to-tent; and failing to stop Klinger's attempt to desert on a homemade hang glider (resembling "a big red bird with fuzzy pink feet"). However, the most serious charge is aiding and comforting the enemy in the form of giving supplies to Meg Cratty, a nurse who runs an orphanage in North Korea.Hawkeye and Trapper John attempt to go to the trial with evidence that will exonerate Henry, but Major Burns (in temporary command) confines them to quarters, guts the swamp and even strips Hawkeye and Trapper to their underwear. Trapper and Hawkeye escape and go to the courtroom, taking Nurse Cratty with them. She testifies that the North Koreans that Henry is accused of aiding were refugees and children at a civilian clinic.

When Burns and Houlihan arrive at the hearing, they cite Hawkeye and Trapper's escape (and technical status as AWOL) as proof of Blake's being unfit to command. Blake defends himself, saying he never set out to be a junior General MacArthur, but that he was only a doctor trying to run a hospital, and that his aid to Meg Cratty improved the life expectancy of the babies born in the area. He then tells the hearing panel to hang him for that if they wish. The head of the hearing board would like to drop the charges in light of the new evidence, but Frank refuses, so Hawkeye and Trapper use what they know best to change his mind: blackmail. Hawkeye jots down a letter threatening to tell Frank's wife about Hot Lips, and of course Frank and Hot Lips give in and drop the charges.

Set during the Korean War in the 1950's

Plot Summary: Hawkeye's picnic date with new nurse Lieutenant Marquette is interrupted by gunshots, which Hawkeye believes to be from Frank Burns, testing his new pistol, but as he and Margaret insist he has yet to fire a shot, the gunshots continue, confirming they are coming from a sniper. The four head back to the camp, where everyone but Radar and Blake, who are both in the showers shelters in the main hospital building, eventually managing to treat casualties which soon arrive. Help from headquarters is not immediately forthcoming, and Frank's attempts to be "a real man" (encouraged by Margaret) leads him and Hawkeye to ambush a figure in the mess tent, who turns out to be Radar, desperate for food. It's not until the following day that outside help arrives, in the form of a US army helicopter firing shots at the sniper. Hawkeye operates on the sniper, and reports to the Swampmen that the sniper targeted the camp in the belief that he was firing on MacArthur's headquarters.
