I had a slight dusting of snow just above Sacramento yesterday morning 1-1-11. It turned to rain and was gone by noon. Still raining today.

We had some snow here a few weeks back.  This is what it looked like outside my house that Saturday night:
Blizzard 12/11/2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFg0wAfipdg#ws)

The next morning after I'd cleard the sidewalk:
Galesville, Wisconsin Blizzard 12 December 2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3oqGqN6pmo#ws)

And in my final triumph over the snow, getting my truck out of it:
1998 Dodge Vs Snow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnVXuyFx_RY#ws)

Area wide we had measurements of 18.5 to 26 inches via the National Weather Service.

We don't normally get anything like the snow we've had in the last two years either. Everyone moans about how it shut the country down but the truth is it doesn't normally fall like that an we're simply not set up to manage it.

Despite the fact the country's overdrawn, someone will need to buy a few more ploughs in the next few years if this is going to carry on.

Mike - should have handed all those stranded passengers a shovel and tell them to get out there and clean off the runways.  I'm actually not kidding.  Would have been cleaned off in no time.  Should do the same out east in the States when the snow hit.  ;)

It would have cleared the runways but I can't see the security guys letting them do it.

I've worked airside at a few places and hoops must be jumped through in order to get the appropriate clearances. I also wonder how the passengers would react but I'd love to see someone have a go at getting them to do this.

I learned to fly gliders at a Canadian Forces base in British Columbia. You couldn't get anywhere near the flight line without a valid ramp pass. I imagine a large airport would be just as strict.

Oh yes! My experience (of civil airports) was before 9/11 too. It can only have got harder since then.

(I've been to military airfields since then, but they're a different kettle of fish)

Oh, yeah I realize all the security issues but these people need to start thinking a bit more logically.  I was on a very late flight back home one time and the little tube thing wasn't lining up with the cabin door right.  It was like one in the morning and we waited and waited for them to fix it.  People asked why we couldn't exit the plan via another door with stairs brought out to us and the crew said it was a safety issue.  So, after maybe an hour of trying to fix the tube, guess what - they let us all out via the rear door and stairs.  ;)

I guess.  Again, I just find it silly that some snow shuts things down so easily sometimes.  This is the year 2011 and we have ways to deal with weather.  Heck, even one big snow plow could clear a runway in a short time.  Not take days and days.

Yeah, that's what surprised me, not being able to keep even a single runway open. On the other hand, once you have a terminal full of people, how do you govern which flights will land and which will take off? With only one runway you're running a reduced service and at that point I suspect it simply became more economic to shut the place and keep everyone away rather than try and manage who comes and who goes.

A few years ago, up where I live, we really had an issue with snow removal. The City was contracting a lot of the services out, and were not paying as much as private business. So we would go for days after a major snow fall with snow clogged roads, but once you got to the Mall or a Walmart, the parking lots were all cleared. All the Snow Removal people would be doing the stores and businesses work first as it paid better. They have found a better balance now, and it seems after a major snow fall, every second guy with a truck, has a trailer with a Bobcat going somewhere to do a snow removal job. I live on a Bus route now, so within a day or two we get our roads cleared which is nice. I was impressed with Pyrovile Videos, for such a major snow fall, they got his roads cleared pretty quickly.

Snowpocalypse 2010 hit the northeast US last week - 24 inches at my house.  Here are some photos from my phone.  The photos near my house are all last Monday morning.  The last one is the airport on Wednesday morning, when I was trying to fly out to Florida.  Ugh!

Well, the snow stopped falling on early Monday morning.  Air traffic was completely canceled from JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark until late Tuesday afternoon.  Luckily, I had booked the second flight on Wednesday morning.  The canceled the first one.  I'm told that my flight was the only JetBlue flight that day to actually leave on time.  :)

Actually we were back in AZ on Thursday and still seeing news reports of people stuck at LaGuardia. They started flight operations Tuesday afternoon but there was no equiptment on the gorund to take people anywhere. No planes were able to come in so the back log was so huge people were stuck.

Yeah, they were telling the people who got bumped that most of them wouldn't be able to get on flights until Monday 1/3.  You only got out if you had a confirmed seat on a flight scheduled for those days.  I even had a woman following me around the airport trying to get me to give up my seat for her.  Whenever I lost her, I saw her later chatting someone else up.  Not cool.

We got some Snow this weekend. Nothing like the Huge Amounts they get in the East, but we usually get some very cold weather after, so the Snow Stays until Spring.

We probably got around 20 CM (8 Inches so far) and this morning it was a crisp -16 C (3 F) with the forecast of -20 c (-4 F) to -25 c (-13 F) for later in the week.

I think after the snow we have got this year, I will plan on buying a snow blower, reading the local news, there was a real shortage on them after yesterdays snow. I think I can get by until the end of the year, and see if I can get one at the end of the season. I was lucky in that my Neighbor has a Snow Blower and cleared my driveway and walk yesterday as it was pretty piled up yesterday. Also after the past few winters, my next Vehicle will be a SUV, as hard to get around on side streets with a car at times. I am lucky I am on a Bus route, so they clear the road regularly after snow storms, but other roads can go for quite some time before they are cleared

Right tools for the right job and lots of practice. It really is amazing how quickly roads can be made passable even with that kind of volume if you have enough snow plows. They are massive dump trucks with huge blades on the front and sand spreaders on the back.

Hahaha!  That's hilarious.  Maybe I should mention that to Mayor Bloomberg.  ;)  But seriously, the last blizzard was an absolute disaster in the city.  I've never seen public transportation get halted like that.  The last road wasn't even plowed until almost a full week later.  People in this part of the US just don't know how to chill out and HAVE to be where they want to go RIGHT NOW.  So they force it.  It used to be that 24 inches of snow meant a nice day off for everyone.  Now it just means you have to leave earlier for work.

And we're expecting another 8 inches on Wednesday.  Is it June yet?

With the economy and less tax money coming in many cities and areas have really cut back on the money for snow removal.  This means basically fewer workers and much less salt being purchased.  The plows are mainly still around, but fewer guys hired to drive them.  So, big snows are taking longer to clear.  So far this winter both here and Michigan have dodged most of this, although Michigan got one big snow a few weeks back and Lynn had school closed for two days.  So, when these big snows happen it's just taking longer to dig out.

Even the "not-so-big" snows are causing problems.

Last Friday, I headed home at about midnight; just 20 minutes after a mild snow shower. Since my apartment was only 15 minutes away, I figured I'd be delayed an extra 5 to 10 minutes by the snow.

Wrong.

My freeway exit was closed & blocked off by police & EMS workers, so I decided to try the next exit up, with the intention of doubling back.  This exit was blocked as well.  Not only that, but the FREEWAY ITSELF was closed.  Stationary cars lined up ahead as far as I could see.  Basically, that area of I-265 transformed into a huge, multi-lane parking lot.

After the first hour parked there, many cars turned around & tried to find another way off the freeway by driving against the flow of traffic, only to be stopped by police cars.

Long story short, myself and who knows how many other motorists ended up stuck there for the next 3 and a half hours.  As I was almost out of gas, I had to alternate cranking up my heater to warm the car for a few minutes, then turning it off to save fuel.

Around 4am, the freeway was finally opened up again.   :P

I hear what you're saying.  I always assumed that the freeways would be the quickest way to get from point A to point B, but a friend pointed out several side-street routes that are actually much quicker than their freeway equivalents.

We've got more snow coming tonight.  I think I might start trying those side-streets out.

My friend's husband got stuck on the Garden State Parkway during out big blizzard.  He's a pharmacist and got called in on Sunday.  It started snowing maybe around 11am Sunday.  On his way home that evening, there was already so much accumulation that transit busses were getting stuck on the Parkway.  Well, one got stuck in front of him, and spun out, blocking all the lanes so no one could get around it.  No emergency workers got to it until the following day.  He was stuck in his car on the Parkway for close to 17 hours.  I can't even image.  Must have had enough gas to keep warm, and I know he got out every now and then to make sure the tailpipe wasn't blocked.

I also her stories that even the plows were getting stuck in the snow out here.  Seems a little silly, but apparently true...

A lot of times in Michigan it can be about the same for time, even under good conditions.  Freeways tend to have a lot more traffic and issues.  When I used to drive down to Detroit for work everyday I seldom took the freeway - even in summer.  Many people drive like idiots on freeways.  I timed it out several times and it was very little time difference taking surface roads vs. the freeway.  And the drive was much more relaxing off the freeway.  Definitely when weather is bad don't get on a freeway unless you have no alternatives.

P.S.  Got about 3 inches of snow here overnight - yucky!

After our big dump of snow on the weekend, we have dipped into some very frigid temperatures. Has been hard to get around a bit, as they have cleared the roads, but now they are very icy and they have not sanded them down all that well. The side roads that have not been plowed yet get very rutty, yesterday was a real challenge keeping the car straight at times. I am pretty much set, that my next vehicle will be a SUV, not sure if I feel the roads are not cleared as well as in the past, or I am just older and not being able to tolerate the challenges of these conditions and cars as much.

For us it's really dependent on how close you live to Lake Ontario. My house is right near the lake so we'll likely get around 10-15 cm and near work about 25 minutes north we'll get 15-20.

That's what the 'storm warning' is saying at least.

Ahh, yeah lake effect stuff can really change amounts.  Happens all the time on the west side of Michigan too.  Grand Rapids there gets a ton of snow every year due to the lake effect.
