Is anyone going this year? My wife and I are planning on attending and we were curious. Thanks!

There has been some definte talk about it.  I'm really going to try and make it.  Depends a bit on the work thing and how all this turns out.  My vacation time might be limited.

I am planning on going but haven't bought tickets yet.  Have the more reasonable prices become available yet?  Last time I looked, only the very expensive tickets were selling....

Okay so the good news is the deal is done! My wife and son and I are going to the Vegas Con!  Airfare, tickets, and hotel are booked!  It has been 30 years since I have been to a purely Trek Convention.

Anyone else making the journey? We have to have a Treks in SciFi meet-up!

We decided to stay at the Hilton so it would be easier to go to and from the Convention with my son since it is across the street.

I'm still debating whether I'll make this year or not.  I was there four years ago for the 40th Anniversary.  Las Vegas is a great place to have a Star Trek convention.

$300 bucks.. that's the most I've ever seen any celebrity charge for a picture and autograph. Would have to pass on that.. would never pay that much.. and I totally love they guy, still not worth it.

Didn't Carrie Fisher charge some crazy amount at Celebration IV? It's all sort of relative to me as I don't place any value on an autograph or meeting a celebrity.

There's a whole little business that has started with these "official photop's" with stars at cons.  Not sure what Carrie has charged but it wasn't cheap I don't think.  Not sure what I would pay, but it isn't $300 - even to meet the Shat!  Ahh, I miss the old days of cons when things like this come up.

Eugen Roddenberry.. Gene's son is putting on a huge party during the con. My buddy Greg Aronowitz (sfx guru) is doing all the SFX for it and he told me all about it yesterday. If you are going you must go to this.. what they have planned sounds AWESOME.. I'm considering driving up just for the party.. it's going to be unbelievable.

I got my tickets in the mail! My son and I are sitting in Row F.  We definitely need to find each other. Are you staying at the Hilton like I am?  My family arrives on Wednesday afternoon.  I am going to try to go to the TrekMovie 'meet up'.  Maybe we could meet there.

Is it just Blackride and I going?  Anyone else coming?

I am going to bring my video camera, recording microphone, etc so that maybe we can do a quick 'video from the Con' segment for TrekSF with all of us sharing our impressions.

I am doing my photo op with Sir Patrick while at the Chicago Comic-Con.  Their prices are a lot cheaper for both autographs and photographs.

I remember way back when getting autographs didn't cost anything if you bought one of the actor's photographs...  I have autographs from Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelley from back at a Con in Los Angeles in 1977 (I think).  I won the tickets to the Con from a radio call-in giveaway at 10PM one night -- calling in on my rotary phone over and over again. LOL

Title: Re: Trek Vegas Convention

Well the first day of the Con has been pretty cool.  This is the ninth TrekCon in Vegas at the Hilton.  Next year, it is moving to the Rio Suites Hotel which is a lot bigger, newer space that will accommodate the growth of the event.

Last night (Wednesday), I spent some time partying with the folks at TrekMovie.com and TrekCast.  Anthony was a cool guy as was his Science Editor and London Correspondent Kayla.  Great conversation (I was mostly listening)!  There were over 100 people at the meetup.  Anthony told me that night that Patrick Steward was bowing out of the Chicago Comic-Con due to a scheduling conflict.  It hadn't been made public yet so I couldn't say anything until today (cuz Wizard World posted it on Twitter today). Bummer!

It's Thursday now and I spent most of the day in the Gene & Majel Roddenberry Theater, where most of the big panel discussions/Q&A were held.  Walter Koenig opened the Con.  He was more low key compared to the others but he had a lot to share about his experiences.  There were a lot of questions, most of them thoughtful, and Walter did a decent job of answering them.

George Takei followed after Walter.  And I must say that George is a far better public speaker -- very engaging, active, and funny.  He was must more vocal so his stories were longer and his answers to questions were more comprehensive (sometimes chasing a few rabbit holes along the way).  I really enjoyed his panel.

Then I took a break to get my Trek Auction catalog and shop the Vendor Hall with my son Ryan.  Our first purchase was a Star Wars model (go figure).  I had a chance to see Richard Hatch (BSG), Richard Keil (Jaws from 007, man is he HUGE), and Margot Rose (the woman from "Inner Light").

After a few more purchases, I went to get my Trek Auction catalog and ended up meeting David Reed -- one of the founders of GateWorld.net and manages the Stargate auction properties of Propworx. It was very cool getting to meet him and talk SG with him for a while.  Turns out he remembered my feedback calls to their podcast.

Then I spend 45 minutes listening to the panel/Q&A for John De Lancie "Q".  This was another very fun discussion with a very dynamic personality.  Other than sharing that he got the role after sleeping with Gene Roddenberry, he talked about his work on Trek and how Gene told him "You have no idea what you are stepping into" while filming the season opener "Encounter at Farpoint".  25 years and people still care about his work.

Among the questions asked of him, he shared that he would in fact be interested in participating in a Trek movie sequel if he was asked and the story was intriguing and the character "Q" was treated well.  So of course, we are all hoping that J.J. hears this!

During all of these presentations, I really wanted to record the audio/video but there are signs all over the place saying that any recordings are expressly forbidden.  So I decided to follow the rules and not break this 'Prime Directive'.  I do have lots of photos but uploading them via 3G is gonna be a bit too slow.  So as soon as I can get to the local Denny's (Free WiFi), I will upload some.  The Hilton charges for their WiFi -- go figure.

One thing I did notice is that they really control access to the celebrities.  If they are not in the Vendor Room sitting at a table, then the only way you are going to have an interaction with them is during the panel Q&A or if you have paid for an autograph or photo op.  They do not just walk around the convention like they do at DragonCon.  I understand why they might not want to be inundated by fans but still, it is a bit disappointing.  Hopefully Mina and Blackride will have more to say about their celeb interactions because they have better access that I do.

I have been tweeting things of interest during the panels so check out my Twitter for today's thoughts and those tomorrow.  I also hope to hook up with Mina tomorrow -- she is working for Creation Entertainment supporting all the autograph tables.  If it works out, maybe she and I can share some thoughts via audio together.

Live Long and Prosper everybody!  If you have anything you would like me to do, send me a tweet (@rpeete) or send me an email here at TrekSF (it will send me a notice on my iPhone).  I promise to get some photos up soon.

They pretty much said that the Experience was a dead issue.  If something similar ever gets built, there are no current plans, it will be totally different and updated.  In fact, the Hilton is losing the TrekCon to the Rio next year.

Well I am behind in my daily summaries but I hope my live tweeting is helpng to fill in the gaps.  I will post a reflection covering the last three days probably as I fly home on Monday night.

I just uploaded a bunch of new photos including some of the Shat, Nimoy, Jeri, Spiner, and Frakes.  The auditorium is very dark so I will have to PhotoShop many of my photos before uploading more.  Hopefully Rico will post them for me.  I will try to get some of Patrick and Dorn this afternoon.

I have been in the auction room today hoping to get a few things.  But people here have deep pockets and items are going for thousands of dollars.  So we will see...

Hopefully, I can hang with Mina sometime today.  She is really busy here!  She was there when Nimory signed my banner so that was kinda cool too.

Mina was so very busy, we just did not have a chance to spend much time together.  We talked a while today after Michael Dorn's talk but then she had to continue working the autograph tables.

She mentioned perhaps we could do some kind of Skype call where we all could share our stories.

I never saw or heard from Blackride. I really wanted to meet him as well.  I would lovento hear his reflections on the Con.

Here are some of my thoughts on the convention. Creation did a decent job with it. There were times when there was confusion on their part and some mis-management. I also did not like the fact that Creation dictated to the vendors that they could not sell pictures of their guests, only Creation was allowed to. They also had a ton of microphone issues which you would think could have gotten worked out on the first day.

Here are some of my thoughts on the stars of the convention.

Shatner: Clearly he only comes to these things for money. He had a crew following him around for a new documentary he is doing called "The Captains". When the camera was on he was all smiles and shaking peoples hands but the minute it was off he was not exactly the most cordial guy in the world. When we got autos and photos with him he did not smile or even look up at us. We were not exactly pleased with that but ohh well.

Avery Brooks: He was simply amazing. His on stage performance was awesome. He played the piano and sang. He was so personable I could not believe it. He spent SOOOO much time with people in their auto and photo ops it was crazy. He asked EVERYONES name and shacked EVERYONES hand. He also asked everyone where they were from. This guy was such a class act!

Garret Wang: Well lets just say this. He clearly loves this environment. He was good on stage and in person. One funny story was that when we were waiting for photos with him, they could not find him at all. The eventually found him "cough" cough" in his room with a guest. They both came down to the photo op and he was great.

More stuff to come.....
Title: Re: Trek Vegas Convention
Post by: Rico on August 11, 2010, 05:08:28 AM
Interesting thoughts Blackride.  My only comment on the Shatner thing would be the question - does he really need the money?  But yeah, I wouldn't expect him to be that inviting when he isn't required to be "on."

Really looking forward to seeing your pics too.
Title: Re: Trek Vegas Convention
Post by: Blackride on August 11, 2010, 05:23:10 AM
Jeri Ryan: She had tons of security around here due to her stalker. For photo ops she sat in a chair and you were not allowed to touch her at all. It was the same thing with autos. They were clearly "on guard" with her. She was pretty funny on stage and was great with everyone.

Brent Spiner: Very cool guy. He took time to ask people their names etc.. He was also awesome on stage.

Nana Visitor: Nana was a nice lady. She had WAAAYYYY too much to drink though. She was clearly drunk or near drunk. When I did my auto time with her she was laughing her butt off. It was very funny. It was nice to meet her though.

Jennifer Lien: This was the most shocking thing at the conference imo. She looked horrible! She was a mess. There are clearly "issues" she is dealing with. If you saw here in person you would have zero idea that she played Kes. During her photo ops she did not smile once. I felt bad for her but it's clear she is dealing with some major stuff at this time.

Michael Dorn: What can I say. He was Worf, but only smaller with very strong glasses :)

Robert Picardo: He was one of the highlights to the whole convention. He remembered both our names the entire time we were there and joked with us a ton. He was a class act and funny to boot.

He had that hat on because of some minor laser surgery he had from his dermatologist or doctor. Something to do with the amount of sun his bald head gets. He had red splotches on his head.

Nana is always like that. I worked with her in the autographs session, and she's just sweet and super friendly and having a great time while she's there. She gave out signed business cards to a good 3/4 of the people who she signed for, meaning instead of just signing for the 400 or so gold and tickets she did, she just about double-signed- and did it all with a smile on her face, never complaining. And let me tell you, almost every other celebrity that had to sign for gold was bitching something fierce at about the half way point.

Unfortunately, this is not a new issue for Jennifer. She came several years ago, and also had a very difficult convention. The rumor was that she was doing a lot better, but based on what I saw, things are still pretty rough for her. You're right, you would NEVER guess looking at her now that she was Kes. I was back in the autographs area while she was signing, and she looked like she was going to cry the entire time. At one point Jonathan Frakes (who was signing across the way) tried to get her attention to see if she was alright, and she wouldn't acknowledge him talking to her. It's very sad.

Great reports everyone. Its sad about Jennifer, according to the interview she did she is hoping to become a nurse, she's out of the acting game and maybe she should just stay away from all the lime light.

Fantastic pictures and thanks to everyone who reported.

JAWS. He was a great guy. He talked to us a lot. He was not able to walk very well at all though. He had to use a scooter.

No, I just put them on Facebook and Photobucket.

I will post some more pictures tonight. I have a ton of the props/wardrobe that they auctioned off.

Great stuff! Some definite fan made TOS props in there, but the later stuff looks authentic.

None of that is fan made at all. That's all authentic screen used items.

The TOS Tricorder, Communicator, and Phaser aren't. There are only a few verified one's in existence and none of them made it into the Experience, they are in private hands. Some items were built and used in DS9 and can be called screen used. Come on over to the RPF and you can learn a lot about props.

Opps! You posted that as I was just saying the same thing! They were designed by fans and used by production.

I am on the RPF. I collect props and wardrobe from Alien and other sci-fi flicks. At some point it gets really expensive though and I need to back off :)

As you have original prop cred, I used to get so frustrated at The Experience when they tried to display some of this stuff as original.

Unfortunately I missed the Experience, but yeah, that would not be cool. There is allot of fake stuff on EBay also that drives me up a wall. I just stick with reputable sellers/dealers.

Those bridge chairs are from the experience and so is the Borg one. You can tell because they are beat to hell!
