Title: "Men of a Certain Age"
Post by: Rico on January 01, 2010, 03:12:04 PM
This series started about a month or so ago.  I just started getting caught up on it.  Pretty cool so far.  Not Sci-Fi, but it's well written and has a great cast.  It's on TNT and other cable networks.  Check your listings.

In the pilot episode, we are introduced to Joe, Owen and Terry, who have been friends for years. Joe, who once had a dream of becoming a professional golfer, is now a party-store owner who is dealing with his recent separation from his wife. Owen works for his father as an auto-salesman in order to make ends meet and Terry is a part-time actor who is trying to recapture his past glory. The three of them support each other through their mid-life challenges during daily lunch meetings at a local diner and hikes in the hills of Los Angeles.

Thanks for the heads up Rico, looks interesting. Of all the channels I get, the only one I don't subscribe to is superchannel which shows it in Canada. Will have to check the Torrents for it.

I've watched all four episodes so far and really enjoyed it. It may be because so much of the humor rings true to life (sadly I might add). I think it is perfectly cast, well written and well directed. Worth your time for sure. It kind of has a Thirty Something vibe for Forty something folks. That's probably the best description I can think of.

I'm looking forward to watching more.  But yeah, it does hit pretty close to home with some stuff.

I see no sign of it over here but it sounds like it might almost be depressing!

No... I would not say it's depressing at all. It's a show about three middle age men dealing with real life issues. It's a drama/comedy. The writing is really good and every show seems to end with just the perfect last scene.

I guess it was the concept of watching the handling of everyday issues for men of a certain age when the reality stares us in the face everyday. If done badly it could be appalling! Thank for the reassurance that it's done well.

I just caught all the way up on it at www.ch131.com (http://www.ch131.com) .

I don't know what to say, other than it compells me to watch.  The underlying truth and situations are so close to home.  The moral dilemmas, the moods I feel, the mid life awkwardness are all dealt with in an entertaining yet thought provoking way.

I may not be a fan of the language they use, but I have to say that this series is really hitting home with me.  Go figure, I wouldn't have thought it would.

Worth a watch in my opinion.

I'm really enjoying this series still too.  Just finished watching episode three, two more to go (counting the new one from Monday).  It's well written and acted and it's refreshing to see these guys "let it all hang out" - so to speak.  Definitely on my TIVO Season Pass list now.

I'd be more interested if:

A: I was older.  I think this would depress me too much so I'll avoid it for now.  *Think happy thoughts, THINK HAPPY THOUGHTS!!*  **EDIT** Never mind, apparently its not that bad.

B: Ray Ramano wasn't in it.  Sorry, but he quit being my favorite actor since I got sick of Everyone Loves Raymon.  (The whining, moaning, and...yeah, you get the point)  I only tolerate him in Ice Age.  Nowadays, whatever I see him in, I'll likely ignore.  HOWEVER, it does have Captain Archer (his name escapes me again) so I might...if I feel up to it.

It's Scott Bakula-  :)

It isn't depressing, but it is thought provoking.  I kind of like the character that Ray plays in this, he's very different than the Raymond character.

I was so surprised by it.

I really like the actor who plays Owen. I think the stories that revolve around him and his family are some of the more poignant and well written. Bakula's character is slightly obnoxious with his "I'm so good looking I can have any babe I want" approach to life. When in fact he's probably the biggest loser of the three. Ray's character, Like Rico said, is not much at all like his character on Everyone Loves Raymond. He's probably the character I feel the most sorry for but most of his problems are his own fault.

Watched the First two episodes tonight, and really enjoyed them. I am in my early 40's but certainly do relate to the characters, and gives me a bit of an idea how things might be for me in a few years. Really like the relationships between the three, and where each of them are in their lives, seems quite real to me. Each has flaws which sort of make them the person they are, and can either see a bit of myself in them, or others I know. Got 3 more episodes downloaded so will watch them this weekend.

I just watched the 5th episode tonight. Owen's dilemma with the city permit department was great. My wife works for the city and the bureaucracy at times is appalling in city government. I loved it when he came back the second time and told the permit guy the story about his father and his record shop. If I had been that guy sitting there listening he would have had me in tears. Great stuff! I think Terry needing ask himself who his is was spot on advice. He needs to grow up. He's almost 50 and lives like a teenager for crying out loud! And Joe's confrontation with his daughter's boyfriend...what father that has a daughter couldn't relate to that? Really good episode. I hope this series makes it. I have no idea where it stands in the ratings but I hope it has a good enough showing that TNT will keep it running for a while.

I'm enjoying this series more and more with each episode.  Some really good writing and great acting.  This is quality stuff and just very cool and real both.  I look forward to seeing more as I am all caught up now.  Well worth watching!

I've been watching from the beginning as well, and agree that Terry's character seems furthest from reality, but I don't live in L.A., so it could be right on.

I like that it doesn't fall into a sitcom/tv trap of "wacky hijinx ensue."  Most of it's believable in that it'd actually happen, or you'd actually try to make it happen.

One beef, they go out to lunch together *a lot*.  I understand it's an easy way to keep people in one place for a conversation, but if any/all of them have financial issues, would really meet at the diner every day (it seems)?

I'll definitely keep up with the show, just so I can be prepared when ChadH becomes a man of a certain age :)

Hi, I'm new on here.  I find Men of a Certain Age to be somewhat humorous, but it is...very...slow...paced.....  However I do agree with Moyer777 in that I feel compelled to watch it.  I record it for my wife, but I find myself getting caught up in the stories.

I just started watching season one of this show and was wondering if anyone else here has given it a look?  One of the stars is Scott Bakula, my favorite leaper and my favorite Captain that isn't Kirk, Picard, Sisko or Janeway.  He does a nice job in this show as an aging lothario who's finally starting to see the years catch up with him.  Ray Romano is another star and I was surprised to find him to be very funny and poignant in his part in this show.  I'm really enjoying it and relating to it as a funny and heartwarming show that sometimes hits close to home.  Give it a look if you haven't yet and let me know what you think.

Great series.  See the thread I merged your post into Joby.  We've been talking about it for a little while now.

Whoops I did do a search but didn't see this thread.  Thanks for the merge, and glad to see people are enjoying it as much as me.

No problem Joby.  Search misses some things at times (especially with common words like in the title of this show).  They just started up showing new episodes again for the rest of their second season.  Wednesday nights I think.

It may surprise everyone, but I really dig this show.  It's so darn real to life that at times it makes you cry, laugh and get uncomfortable.. pretty cool actually.

Doesn't surprise me at all Rick.  The characters are interesting and the show is very well done.  One of the few, non-SF dramas I really enjoy.

When does part two of season 2 start? I don't get it on any channels I subscribe to in Canada, so I have to use other means to watch it. It is a real down to earth show to me, sort of refreshing, as it does not feel as it is over produced.

I was sold at "Andre Braugher". Still need to work through the Homicide DVDs one of these days.

Will definitely keep my eyes on Netflix for this one...

Started up again on June 1st Jeff.  So there should be new episodes popping up now online.

My comcast/xfinity app is currently showing the episodes soon after air.  Episode 7 of season 2 is up now, and I think episode 8 is on tommorow night.  I believe they show them on TNT's website too.

edit:  just checked and no full episodes are available on TNT.tv.  There's certainly other ways to find them just watch out for those draconian Canadian data caps.

TNT has shown them at times since the series has been airing, but it's hit or miss.  Plus you can certainly find better quality versions online - if you know where to look for them.  ;)

That is unfortunate news as I really liked the show. Sadly, I had to watch via other methods, since I did not get the channel it showed up here in Canada, not that my viewership would have been collected in their data anyways. Well written show, the felt a bit different from what else was on TV, and just so little of it, with such short seasons.
