Title: Started running
Post by: billybob476 on July 23, 2009, 06:29:11 AM
Well I thought I'd post about this. One of my guildmates over on the Extralife forums started running using the program posted here: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml)

It's not really a complex plan and is likely a pretty standard way to get running so I figured I'd give it a try. So I did the first "run" yesterday. It consisted of jogging for 60 seconds and walking for 90 seconds over 20 minutes. It sounds like it wouldn't be a huge deal, but by the end I was pretty tired!

One fun tool I used was an iPhone/iPod Touch app called Intervals. Basically it's an interval timer that you set up with durations for your warm up, high intensity, low intensity and cool down and then set up the number of intervals (I had to do 8 to make up 20 mins plus 5 min warm up and cool down for a total of 30 mins). What it does is every time you have to change intervals, it plays a chime which you can hear over your music. When you hear the chime, if you are walking, you start to jog, if you are jogging you start to walk.

It was a lot easier then having to look at my watch every minute!

So my next steps are:

1. get an armband for my iPhone. I was running holding it in my hands and I have a feeling that if I keep that up it'll end up smashed on the ground.

2. Get some new shoes. My current shoes are over 3 years old. My feet are fine today but as the program progresses I'll be going harder and I think my old shoes may not hold up then. I'll be hitting the Running Room (http://www.runningroom.com/ (http://www.runningroom.com/)) to get fitted for something appropriate.

So overall I'm a little sore (which I guess makes sense) but I'm stoked to hit it again tomorrow. I've always had an aversion to running but I think that's more of a relic from high school gym class then actually being unable to do it.

That's awesome, Joe! I checked out the plan and it looks good and more importantly, safe. New shoes are an absolute must. Proper running shoe's make running a much more pleasant experience. A good running store should be able to fit you in a shoe that address your running form, which is also crucial. You may require a shoe with more stability if you tend to pronate when you run or a more neutral shoe. Running shoe technology is pretty remarkable, not all shoes are created equal. Please feel free to ask me any questions about running you may have. Meds also recently started a running program.

Yeah the old pair of Asics I got on sale 3 years ago have seen better days. :)

With this plan I actually enjoyed myself while I was running unlike before when I would just try and push myself too hard, get tired and frustrated after 5 mins and give up.

Honestly it did feel good after. I was tired, but it was a good kind of tired. I slept all night (I usually wake up for a few mins around 3 am and 5 am) and it was nice to get myself out of the house for 30 mins.

Also, thanks everyone for the encouragement!

Covert Bailey has a great story about running.

I was stressed after arguing with my wife so I went out for a run.  After 1 mile I was not stressed.  After a 2nd mile, I forgot what we were arguing about.  After a 3rd mile -- I forgot her name.

Indeed, running can be very cathartic. When I went through s very difficult divorce, running was a place I could escape to for an hour and clear my mind (said in the best Morpheus voice).

Running is excellent - even on a treadmill but I think you get better workout in the "real world"

Its amazing. Running helps clear my head and make things come into focus.  I could be stressed and dealing with a problem I am confused over and during my run everything just becomes clear.  I just started running 4 years ago. I can't imagine how I made it through life before

Oh, now you're making me want to run.

(I probably need to, I'm just not motivated to...yet. When they close my office sometime in te next two years and I have to start driving to work instead of walking, then I'll REALLY need to run, just to try and control my weight.

Title: Re: Started running
Post by: Bryancd on July 23, 2009, 12:32:40 PM
So far this year I've run 832.7 miles. At this point in my season I average about 30 miles per week. I will get up into the low 40 miles per week as Ironman approaches.
I have also biked 3,468 miles and swum 138 miles, so that's my handicap. ;)

You just keep to your plan, Joe. One of the biggest mistakes new runners make is building mileage too fast and running too fast. While running, you should be at an effort level where you could hold a conversation. That will keep you in your aerobic heart rate zone. You want to build your aerobic capacity slowly. That's also the effort level where your body utilizes fat for fuel almost exclusively. The more efficient your body becomes, your pace will become faster at the same level of effort. It's really amazing how your body adapts to work loads.

Funny, today (when I was running ;P ) I was thinking to post something about it. (Rico commented on the treadmill speed in a recent TSF episode).

Running not only reduces stress and gives the body a nice shape (that health stuff...), it also makes you smarter!!! Major selling point for geeks, I think. :)

Bryan is right, don't exaggerate, and try not to let it bother you when everybody else is faster than you. Stick with it, and be patient, especially the first months are said to be quite rewarding! :)
Title: Re: Started running
Post by: billybob476 on July 23, 2009, 01:10:33 PM
I have no issues with people being faster then me. That's why I've started doing it on my own. That way the only competition I have is with myself. Other times I've tried doing things with freind who are much fitter then me and I'd burn out.
Title: Re: Started running
Post by: cosmonaut on July 23, 2009, 02:13:00 PM
The one time I did run with a friend I was totally exhausted. But there are other runners, every one of them faster than me.

After a while, I get impatient. I'm running too far and too fast (the first time I tried even every day, big mistake). And then my calves are beginning to ache and I get a cold. So I have to pause and somehow 'forget' to start again... :(

And every time I start again I wonder why I ever stopped, my body feels good when I run and after, my head seems clearer. I like how the air tastes and how the ground is soft after a short rain. I even like the rain, it's presently so warm, it's refreshing and the wind dries me fast.

But enough about me, I hope you'll post more the coming weeks! :)

Running / biking gets you out of your rut - that's for sure.

I just started riding again, now that I've moved to a new house.
I used to live next door to the "Tour of Nevada City" bike shop.
Too many of these guys always riding through the neighborhood - it was a little intimidating  :-\

Sometimes having some external accountability can help motivate. I have a coach who designs all my training and having to report back to him helps me complete all my workouts and do complete them at the proper levels of intensity, be that easy or hard.

That's why my wife is seeing a trainer and nutritionist at the moment. She needs to drop some weight because of some blood pressure history in her family. Thank god for company health benefits! :)

I need to keep an eye on myself since my grandfather died of a heart attack, my father had a major one in his 40's along with a quadruple bypass about 10 years go and my brother is pretty overweight and has high cholesterol himself.

Did my second run yesterday (it was pouring rain all weekend). Went well, it was a tad warm so I was a might sweaty by the end :)

I found a nice trail that follows a creek at the end of my street (still learning the area we moved into in April) and then hits the Lakeshore. Surprisingly, it ends up pretty much being the perfect distance for this part of the program.

Run #3 tomorrow!

How far do they have you going, Joe? Trails are a great place to start, assuming the ground is even it's very easy on the legs as opposed to asphalt.
Title: Re: Started running

It's not really a distance per say at this point. They concentrate on the interval times. walking / jogging for 30 mins I don't imagine it's more then a mile or so.

:D Marshal Girard can verify...

"Our fugitive has been on the run for ninety minutes. Average foot speed over uneven ground barring injuries is 4 miles an hour and that gives us a radius of six miles. What I want out of each and every one of you is a hard-target search of every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse in that area. Checkpoints go up at fifteen miles. Your fugitive's name is Doctor Richard Kimble. Go get him."

Well, you could determine distance with a map and a ruler or google earth, but I don't think that's important right now.

It's good you have found a nice trail, sounds pleasant, and it will be too short for you soon enough! :)

Actually looking at google maps it was pretty easy to map out my route. Starting and ending at the green dot.

EDIT: Google Earth says it's about 2.5 miles. Granted, my cooldown began as I turned off of Brown's Line so the last bit on the side streets I walked.

Just got back from run #3. Next run I switch from running 60 seconds walking 90 seconds to running 90 seconds walking 2 mins for 30 mins.

Bryan, any advice on breathing? What I tend to do when I'm jogging/running is breathe in through the nose for about 4 paces the out through the mouth for another 4 paces. I try to keep it as steady as I can.
Title: Re: Started running
Post by: Bryancd on July 29, 2009, 05:05:39 PM
Breath naturally, however feels the most comfortable. Don't force any rhythm or technique. You do not want to deprive your muscles of oxygen, just keep going at a pace where if I was beside you, we could have a conversation. If you feel like you are laboring in your breathing, slow down.

Oh, you will, especially as long as you keep your intensity on the low side, that's all aerobic work and turns your body into an efficient fat burning machine

Just back from my long Sunday run of 13.6 miles. Another important part of developing a running protocol is doing some kind of post run stretching. You don't have to get crazy, but try and do some light stretching for 5-10min after you run, not before. Helps prevent injury.

Mrs Robbo and I are preparing for our 3rd Bristol Half Marathon in September. http://www.bristolhalfmarathon.com/bhmHome/ (http://www.bristolhalfmarathon.com/bhmHome/) . Training hasn't gone too well due to a recent knee injury for myself. I have just purchased a new knee support which seem to be doing the trick along with some physio. Ran 6 miles Friday night and 7.3 miles this morning. I certainly agree with the stretching Bryan. We do a light 3 minute stretch warm up before and after our runs.
Title: Re: Started running
Post by: Bryancd on August 02, 2009, 12:06:46 PM
Excellent. Bring the mileage up slow as to not overtax the knee and make sure you are running in fresh shoe's that are right for you. Many runners try and get too much mileage out of their shoe's and end up hurt as the shoe's do wear out. I switch out every 300 miles or so. I'm sure you know this, robbo, I just wanted put this out there. Best of luck and keep us updated!

That's awesome. Next season (spring or summer I guess) I may look into a 10K. By that time 5K should be a joke.

An update on me: Still running 2-3 times a week, things are getting much easier. Tonight I'll be swinging by the gym to see if I can get a reasonably priced membership. It's been raining (actually torentially downpouring) a lot recently which puts a damper on my runs.

A treadmill is definitely not as much fun but at least it's weather-resistant! Also come winter  I doubt I'll like running outside when it's 20 below!

Actually, I'm not sure what the impact is, but my father has a heart condition (and had a quadruple bypass about 5 years ago) and his doctor told him to absolutely minimize exerting himself outside when it's very cold.

Didn't quite do 13.1 miles as we had hoped :( Got up to 11.3 but due to the warm & breezy conditons, called it a day. The fact that we ran 9 miles Wednesday evening may have been a contributory factor!
We are pretty confident of beating last years times (me 2 hours 7 minutes/Mrs Robbo 2.16) as we have definatley put in more miles this time around.

No, we have the extreme heat, which is even more dangerous for some. I tolerate it well but it's tough some days, even early in the morning. The effect of temperature is that you body has to expend energy either cooling itself in the heat, or keeping your core warm in the cold. In your cae, Joe, energy needs to be concentrated in your core to stay warm and you have less available for your muscles. In the heat, as your core temp rises, your brain forces your body to slow. It's really remarkable!

Yeah I get both ends here, 20 below in the winter and 90's in the summer. :)

Also I'm not nearly hardcore enough to run in the rain, hence the gym membership (as much as the gym bugs me).

Well, figured I'd ressurect this old thread.

It's official, I'll be running the Disney Half Marathon in Orlando January 8th, 2011. NOt sure what I've gotten myself into here but at least I've got a lot of time to train!

Here's a report on my last run: http://runkeeper.com/user/billybob476/activity/14855604 (http://runkeeper.com/user/billybob476/activity/14855604)

I figure I'll use this thread to chronicle training for my first half marathon. The route takes you from just outside Epcot, though the Magic Kingdom and back around to inside Epcot.

Now the fun begins...

EXCELLENT Joe. Have you chosen a specific training plan yet?

Nothing yet. Fran had a plan she followed for her last half so she's kind of working with me. Right now I'm just doing 2-3 runs a week trying to increase my endurance. Any suggestions would of course be appreciated :)

I figure with 4 months until the race I'll have more then enough time to get up to speed.

Yes, the key for building run endurance fitness is run FREQUENCY. So instead of running 2-3 times per week for say 6 miles each, run 4-5 times per week even if it's just 3-4 miles each. So your weekly run distance volume will still be say 15-18 miles but do that with more frequent runs. For right now that should be your focus. All these efforts are at an easy/moderate pace.

Right, I know when Fran was training for her first run (she's running the Disney race as well, though she'll be in a faster corral) she only really did one long run per week with the others being shorter. Even at that the long runs only started coming in a few weeks before the race. The week of it was just short easy runs.

Well, I impressed myself last Friday and posted an 8.7 Km run (that's 5.4 miles for you guys :) ). It's good when Fran runs with me, she forces me to go harder and farther then I would otherwise. I wasn't even that sore after! If it isn't pouring rain tonight then I'll hit it again.

Looking forward to a month when I get my treadmill! I can't stand the gym. It'll be nice to quit that. We've got enough weights at home in our little home gym corner.

It always impresses me that for Fran a 'light run' is 10K :)

9.5K last night...so close to 10!

This week's Take Him With You kept me suitably entertained. :)
