While I was perusing the topic "Rank the Trek films", It came to my attention that one of our fine members has not seen "The Final Frontier". Now I love a little bit of gentle ribbing and I have given Mike a couple of digs. But I was genuinely surprised.
Surprised enough to start this thread. I'm interested in why you haven't seen it Mike. Is it because you have heard that it isn't one of the stronger movies, or that you just haven't got around to it yet?
Also, I think it's up to his mates here to badger (er, I mean convince) him to put right this wrong as soon humanly possible. Come on everyone, sell "The Final Frontier" to him. ;D
Come one Mike; you have to check it out! Think of it as a right of passage, like the Klingon Pain-Stick ordeal. It might hurt a little, but you'll be a stronger Trekker for having endured it! ;)
Basically Eric is saying the pain runs deep, share it with me.
What, what ! Good call Tim. One of our own is letting us down. Good lord man do you not know what you are doing. This is what let the British Empire down, we can't have this behaviour going on here. Think about the troubles man. Darn it with this kind of behaviour they'll have a scotsman playing scotty. ;-)
Get Mike in front of a TV, stat!!!!! And prepare a stiff drink, he's going to need it to wallow through that misery!
The Final Frontier has a lot of great moments. Two examples below. One - the music is really good.
Listen to the start of this clip:
Star Trek 5 - The Final Frontier (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlxzpWjM5Q8#lq-hq)
And this scene is just wonderful:
Kirk, Spock and McCoy go camping! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1rnIjFspc8#lq-hq)
They go camping, get called away on an adventure, the plot falls apart, and Lenord and De look into the camera as if to say, sorry they had to let him direct one.

I think the basic plot/story in this film is actually pretty good. I like the idea of Spock's half-brother being this very emotional, charismatic Vulcan. And the God angle is interesting. I just think they needed things tweaked here and there better. The back story on this film is the budget was being slashed all over the place and there were issues getting the effects, etc. Lots of things that hurt the production. But again, I think it was an interesting subject to tackle. At least for me.
What can I say! My own thread!!
OK, I confess but at least I now have something to do before I die. :)
I will be honest, in that there were other Star Trek movies I liked less then Star Trek 5. I agree with a lot of what Rico said about it, there were some good elements to the movie, just other things working against it. For me I thought this movie was a bit to short, as it never relayed to me the effort it took to get past the Great Barrier and to Ska Ka Ree, but that was probably a lot to do with budget cuts in things like special effects.
It had its cheesy moments to it, but I actually recall chuckling at them in the theatre. Those moments don't really stand up today, but I guess a person has to view when this movie was made.
I don't really know why I missed it when it came out. I'd have thought I'd have seen it regardless - look how quickly I saw the new film. I think that once it was out, it's reputation simply got the better of it with me so I never made the effort to seek it out and watch it.

That's no excuse, you have to suffer like the rest of us! :roflmao
Actually, it isn't THAT bad at all. I quite like it.
Given the choice, I think I would have rather watched a whole movie about Kirk Spock and McCoy camping. It was the best part of the movie.
You're not encouraging me Alan...
Its worth seeing mike, its still Trek.
yeah, I have to agree, as much as I thought parts of it were lame, there was some very nice character moments. The camping scenes were pretty darn good.
I will say, the parts that were good in the final frontier were better than the good parts of the undiscovered country.
Ah! Now you're tempting me...
Don't do it,... it is a trap!
DON'T GIVE IN TO THE DARK SIDE!!! :yoda
Ugh, watched it once and that's all I ever wanted to watch. The whole feel of the movie was way out of touch with the rest of the movies. I know I'm going against the tide here, but I was unimpressed. It looked like a fan-made movie.
But hey, it is your choice after all.
King
As posted earlier, the movie has some great character moments, but it has at least an equal number of painful ones. Still, I stand by my position that it has to be seen, at least once. Just be ready to cringe. ;)
Here's some of what you can look forward to-
LOL! I tried to delete that from my memory.... Thanks Eric.
I look forward to your 1000 word review Mike.

You jest...but it's not impossible!
As this thread's just come to my attention again, I should point out that I have now seen the film.
I may never watch it again (although it is still on my Sky+ box) but I no longer have this hole in my Trek exexperience.
lol. At least you experienced it one time and now understand why god doesn't need a starship.

Oddly enough, I could probably have made that intuitive leap
without having seen the film.
The bigger thing to note is that I've finally seen the 'I know this ship like the back of my hand' line which I'd only ever previously heard in audio!
"Bring the ship....closer"
I still find some moments in this film really great. Especially some of the personal stuff between the main trio of characters.
I was shocked to learn that even Spock and Bones were supposed to betray Kirk. :(
Let's just be glad Shatner only did one.
Well I hate to admit it after reading all those posts but I've never seen it either.. I've seen bits and pieces. And worse yet I've never seen all of the motion picture, I went to a double feature of Tron and Star Trek way back in the day and fell asleep during Star Trek.
My excuse, if I'm allowed one is that I'm not a huge TOS fan, I haven't seen every episode of the original series either (man I'm digging my hole deeper). As I get older I enjoy TOS more and more so I'm sure in time I will have everything watched.
TMP is a fine movie but it is VERY slow moving. I rarely watch it. As for Final Frontier, I think it got a bad rap. It's not the best movie by far, but it's enjoyable enough.
I think I may have mentioned before, but Star Trek 5 was the Star Trek movie I saw the most times in the Theatre. I felt the recut of TMP they released on DVD a few years back was pretty good. It moves slower then some of the other movies, but I like it in that it has a different feel and look then the rest of the original cast Star Trek movies.
I compare it to a lot of those TNG clunker episodes where the overall story arch was horrible and yet the cast produced great character moments which didn't have anything to do with the plot. I don't think I've ever heard anyone complain about the camping trip or the emergency shuttle docking with the jump to warp speed. I've watched this one more times than the Undiscovered Country, Insurrection, and what is sometimes called the Motionless Picture.
Can someone start a "GEEKYFANBOY HAS NEVER SEEN "THE FINAL FRONTIER" thread now please? Then we can lock this one down and move it to a deep archive somewhere ;)
In a way, I'm envious of those who haven't seen certain movies or episodes. One thing I always do like to say though, is try to watch this stuff with an open mind as much as you can. Trek 5 has had an overly bad rap, in my view. Not the best Trek film, but it has some cool and fun moments. And for me, any Trek film or even episode is still better to watch than many other things.
I have not seen every episode of Enterprise.
i do think Final Frontier is a below average Trek movie. It just tried to be too much and it got boring.

Agreed. It's the Spock's Brain of the movies.

Yes, I tend to agree. I went into this very much as a chance to watch 'Star Trek I've never seen' which is an opportunity that doesn't come very often these days.
As the old saying goes..."Bad Trek is better than no Trek"!
I actually like Final Frontier and it grows on me more each time I watch it in sequence with the other films.
