Title: Anyone really care anymore?
Post by: Tyler on May 05, 2009, 09:26:19 PM
The continuity of our universe, imperfect through it was, is about to torn to shreds in the reboot. Do we really care anymore? Will we reconcile it with alternate timelines? Or will be just say  ... ehhhh, the ship is cool and the action looks hot. No matter. Has it simply all come to that?  Let's hear some noise!!!

Umm, to be honest we care, but we already have a thread for this Tyler.  http://www.treksinscifi.com/forum/index.php?topic=814.msg70116;topicseen#new (http://www.treksinscifi.com/forum/index.php?topic=814.msg70116;topicseen#new)  Also, do not drag this forum into a whine-fest of people complaining for the sake of it.  Its the only reason I've been here for 1+ years.  I hate it when people come in with the attitude of "making noise".  So please, I'm sure that wasn't your intention, but keep it clean and mature here.

Thanks.

King

At this point the continuity is pretty complex. The franchise needs new fans, those new fans won't care that thing X can't happen because in season 2 of TOS the Enterprise visited Omicron Persei 8 and Kirk contracted Rakatan malaria which makes it impossible for him to wave hello with his left hand on Tuesdays.

At the end of the day, I feel that the most important thing is to make good movies in the spirit of Trek. I don't want them trying to remake what has been done or spending more time making sure they don't screw up the continuity then is spent on making crafting a good story and making believable characters.

I actually feel we have already done that to a less degree with "Enterprise". For me, that show felt like a min--reboot although they tried to have continuity, it still felt a bit different to me and included character and plot aspects which seem to challenge a lot of what cams before but I was still able to enjoy the show as a Star Trek program. So it will be with the new movie, just much more extreme. I think the plot they have created to address the changes in continuity isn't the best, but sufficient to put me into the new universe with a fresh prospective.

Maybe we should wait until we see the movie.

I think it's going to be great. Some of the stuff will shock a few people, but it will be a great ride. I love things in a set continuity, but I also love things that give reason to shake up that continuity and maybe even correct some of those problems that we've seen. Enterprise was a great start ... this is going to kick it up a notch.

I don't consider it my Star Trek, the one I grew up with and have loved over the years, just like I didn't consider the new BSG anything like the old BSG.

They are using some of the same names and places but it's a totally different entity, so continuity is not a factor here.

And from what I have seen it looks like it's going to be great.

My thoughts exactly. I think we will all have PLENTY to say after this weekend!

Why should Star Trek be the only genre not to be retold?

I don't want to see 40s Superman, I don't want a cold war James Bond and I don't want a continuation of 90s Batman.
The world around us changes, we change, the stories have to change. If things stagnate they wither and disappear, as the tooth of time gnaws on them. You seem to be afraid to loose something, when, in fact, we are gaining.

Valeris: But is it logical? Surely we must... Spock: Logic, logic, logic. Logic is the beginning of wisdom, Valeris. Not the end.

Good points, all. And I really wasn't trying to stir up trouble. Appreciate the feedback.

I guess there's really never been anything like this before -- something with the depth and history of Star Trek having a reboot.

I would disagree with that. Superman, Batman, spiderman, the Fantastic four, Iron Man, Godzilla, and a host of other properties that are not only older than Trek, but have been producing new stories almost continually. All of these properties have had to re-imagine, reboot, and retool their characters over the decade to keep them fresh in the minds of the people. This is the key to success. When you have a beast as old Trek, you have two choices, put her to pasture or put her under the knife. There are just too many good scifi shows on these days that it makes it hard for the old Trek to pick up new fans. People like that feeling of getting in on the ground floor and they can't do that with a series that was canceled a decade before their parents were born and the spinoff ended more than a decade ago.

We need fresh new blood and we need to excite them. There is just too much good Sci Fi out there for us to leave Trek in the past and expect it to compete with the future.

Success - no, I think more in the terms of "relevance". It's more an updating or re-packaging, keeping the relevant/ageless/classic core intact but telling the story in a way the present audience can understand and connect. And that didn't start in the 20th century, that started the day the first story was retold.

Another point: It's SciFi, it must look like the future and not like the past. (There are exceptions.)

OK, I have seen ST11.

I confess that on the basis of the trailers I was expecting not to like it.

I was pleasantly surprised.

Considering that TNG episode where Whorf was shifting between parallel universes you can't really claim that this violates Star Trek canon.

Even though I watched the very first episode of Star Trek when it first aired, I'm a sci-fi fan not a Star Trek fan so if you can have parallel universes with alternate timelines then a lot of things can be played fast and loose.

I didn't see how they explained the young Spock knowing that Vulcans and Romulans were related since that was not determined until Balance of Terror in the Original Trek timeline.  But then Enterprise had encounters with Romulans and at least one was on Vulcan in that triple episode with the Kir'shara.
