Title: Weird dreams - too much Sci-Fi??
Post by: Rico on October 09, 2008, 06:31:31 AM
So lately maybe about once a week I have some very vivid dreams that seem very real when I am having them.  Last night was a doozy!  I had this dream where Lynn and I were in some kind of very tall building, maybe a hotel.  And we seemed to know that war was coming - the Earth was in trouble.  So, as we looked out the large window in the distance we saw a nuclear bomb go off and the explosion fanned out from it and moved toward us.  In the dream I think we fully expected to die, but we didn't.  The blast seemed to stop short of where we were at.  So we went down some stairs to the ground level and saw everyone running in panic away from the blast.  So of course we did that too.  That's pretty much where it ended and I woke up.

Now it's easy for me to understand where all this came from.  On "Heroes" this past week there was a blast like this and I also watched the most recent Terminator episode last night.  Add all that to the crazy things going on in the "real" world these days and it all makes sense.  The funny thing was, I really wasn't scared at all in the dream and seemed to kind of know what to do.

Anyway, just thought I'd share all that.  I know we have talked about dreams before but has anyone else been having vivid dreams like this lately?

P.S.  Maybe I need to cut back on the SF for a bit?  .......nahhh!

Well I can say for sure I only have vivid dreams when something is weighing on my mind. Same as you they are not always scary but they do tend to be somehow related to what I'm thinking about.

Dreams are crazy things.

I had a dream this morning that the U.S. was invaded by the Chinese and I was part of an underground resistance movement. It was very bizarre!

I've had some incredibly bizarre dreams in the past (http://celestialteapot.wordpress.com/2008/06/04/dream-a-little-dream/#more-18) :S

Nahhhhh!  Although tbh, I went through a Captain Picard era where he kept charging at me for no reason.......it was mildly freaky.

A wraith took over and told me to lead him to some secret Atlantis base, I had ronon's gun but due to the fact that Wraith = more creepy vs. Power of ronon's gun It just shot light out of it

I mentioned it in the Sarah Connor Chronicles topic, but here seems to fit better this topic being about about dreams. A few days ago I had a dream I was John Connor in the future (after the machines take over). That was fun, leader of the future survivors of Earth till I woke up.

Also two nights before that I had a dream that the world ended right in front of me. I was riding in my uncles van with him, he was driving (I'm living with my uncle now) and everything just started to rip out of existence, very strange, the sky turned purple then shredded to nothingness and the buildings and houses around us disappeared. They cracking and broke apart and slipped into a void that wasn't any color, not even black, it was just nothing. Strangest thing about the dream was I wasn't scared, worried, anxious, I just was. It didn't seem like a big deal the world ending and all, I wasn't afraid. After waking up  I later found myself in the exact same position as I had experience in my dream, all the same events and elements. Obviously nothing happened the world didn't end we're all still here. But I've been a tad uneasy every time we go somewhere in my uncle's van. If I'm honest it's a bit surreal.

Wow guys (Ktrek and Rico)... the weird thing is I had a apocalyptic/Mad Max  dream recently too! I chalked it up to all the devastation I've seen down here in Galveston, but there was a war element to my dream. David and I were walking on a street downtown (I'm not sure which city) and there was rubble everywhere, dust floating in the air, papers blowing about. We were in shock. He was holding my hand and we were looking for food and some place to sleep. We found a beat up couch in the middle of the street...it looked like it fell out of a building that crumbled or something. It was getting dark, we laid down to rest for a while...but we were disturbed by the sound of a helicopter. People started scrambling out of the buildings and running to it, like they expected food to be tossed from it, but a machine gun opened up and started killing them. Dave and I started running, I fell and he turned back to help me up...I don't know what happened after that because I woke up crying.

It was quite frankly the most vivid, frightening dream I've had in a very long time. Do you think the current world situation has us dreaming stuff like this? Hopefully it's not prophetic.   :o

I know you said you saw something on Heroes, Rico... but obviously that image was heavy enough to stick in your mind and arise in your dreams.

I had watched Dr. Strangelove just before I went to bed the night I had the end of the world dream, so that might be the cause of that.

But I just mentioned the apocalypse dreams, two nights ago I had one even worse, I had a dream that I had to do the graduate ceremony from High School again, the horror, and I screwed it up and looked like an idiot in front of everyone (What a nightmare).

No Rico I didn't! First of all because I don't watch Southpark and secondly I no longer have cable or TV access. If I want to see anything now it has to be downloadable or streaming. Otherwise I just buy DVDs.

And Jen...yea..I hope these dreams are not prophetic! I have had dreams come to pass before and this particular dream was very vivid. I have nothing against China but if they invade the U.S. I will do what I can to make it hard for them.

I have those a lot and they always seem to be inter-connected somehow.

However my hands down favourite weirdest dream was when I went hunting deformed space bears...

I was in some sort of spaceship, with a crew of about four other people. The space ship was big red and had orange furnishings, it was a sort of hexagon shape and it had those weird smooth walls you tend to see in sci-fi films. We were hunting for some strange sort of deformed bears so headed off to a planet (possibly), where we landed and went country dancing (!!).

After we country danced, we borrowed some electric type golf car things to drive over the bumpy hills to investigate a sighting of these strange deformed bear things. Whilst we were investigating we were attacked by the bear things and injured. The spaceship came to rescue us and that's when I woke up.

I've had dreams like that. Mostly because of my (now past) video game addiction.

Granted, too much of everything would give you nightmares. Just change the nuclear blasts for some other subject on sci fi and you'll be ok.

Now for the most part, when I get dreams like this I get all excited. It's like if my mind was producing its own feature film, starring me! lol

Once I dreamt I was in a sci fi movie with Jacki Chan. It was awesome!  :metallica:

The last really disturbing dream I had was kind of abstract.  Some friends and I were trapped in a 3-dimensional maze that kept revolving like a washing machine, so from one moment to the next, the floor and ceiling would be constantly trading places.

To make matters worse, the walls of different parts of the maze would randomly close in, like the Trash Compacter from A New Hope.  Doors would randomly close, cutting off different paths in the maze.  If we took a wrong turn and got cut off, we would be crushed. :(

Looking back, I'm certain that the dream was 100% work-stress related.

Thought I'd bring this thread back since I had a very vivid and interesting dream last night.  It actually involved time travel.  I had some kind of object that let me travel in time.  It kind of looked like the time turner from the Harry Potter films/books.  I knew it worked and had used it.  Now, something happened - some type of accident and I wanted to go back in time and fix it.  But here is the interesting hitch.  When I would go back in time and alter things, everything and everyone from that point forward would change.  Their memories, experiences thoughts, etc.  BUT, I wouldn't change.  I would remember all the old versions and so on.  So the trouble for me was if I changed things it could mess up my relationships in the present.  For example, I may not even know certain people anymore, they might not know me, etc.  Very "Butterfly Effect."  Anyway, in the dream I thought I found a point in time where I could only alter a tiny thing by going back and telling myself about the accident.  So I decided to do that, but then I woke up.  Weird, but interesting dream.

Great topic - I'll go through periods where I can remember my dreams.
My favorite involve flying, Upon concentrating hard enough, I can levitate a few feet off the ground, lean back and go scooting everywhere.
It can be a little unnerving to spin out of control and fall - straight up.  :o

I have pretty interesting dreams that I can recall at least a couple times a week.  Even when I was growing up this was the case.  I think you can actually train yourself to be aware and more conscious of your dreams too.

I don't remember any of my dreams.  I think I'm thankful for that.  I remember when I was a kid reading something in a National Enquierer type paper in a lanundrymat about directing what you dream about by thinking about it as you went to sleep.  I spend a lot of nights thinking about being the 6 mililon dollar man.  In hindsight I wish I'd have spent more time thinking about Linda Carter.

In most of my dreams, I'm petrified of heights, I curl into the fetal position and have to crawl when in tall buildings. I'm not remotely scared of heights when I'm awake. I've bungied and was a diver in high school.

My dreams seem usually to be pretty close to normal life. There's the occasional really off the wall sort of thing, but usually normal physics apply. I've dreamed many times of being in the next day, doing the things I was supposed to, but many times I've screwed up and missed something and I get freaked out cause I can't believe I forgot something like that and can't figure out how. Then I usually realize I'm dreaming and wake up.

But speaking about my really weird crazy dreams that I occasionally have some of those ones scare the crap out of me, well rather I scare the crap out of me. If dreams are a reality of how we would react in an actual situation I may be a bit screwed up compared to other more average folks.

I haven't had a decent sci-fi dream in years (if ever) but I remember much fewer of them that I used to so I don't relly know.

Last night, for some reason, I dreampt we hadn't moved offices yet and I was still in the old building (although it had been re-modelled somewhat). I never did find out what I was doing in there.

I used to focus on certain things when I was younger as I went to sleep to dream about them and it would work sometimes.  It kind of still does in a way as things going on in my life end up in my dreams in a way.  I find changes in life can alter your sleep patterns and dream state.  Which makes a lot of sense.

Those dreams are the most real.
I think we all have that dream where we find ourselves at an old job or school.

I've found most of the dream that I remember happen in the morning after I've woken up briefly and gone back to sleep for that hour or so before I get up. But a lot of times they are things I've thought about or subconsciously took in throughout the previous day. It's kinda interesting what comes up in a dream which I didn't think made much of an impact on me in my actual day.

Last night I had a weird dream. And it does have to do with Sci-Fi. I went to a sci-fi convention and for some reason we had to park out in a dry grass field. The convention must have been at a barn in Kansas or something. But I remember all these cars out in this field and after I got out of my car guess who I run into...Rico!! Im not kidding! And we started talking and walking and we get to another row of cars where Rico waves to somebody and says "Hi, Meds!!! And that was it. Meds just so you know you don't wear glasses and you have short brown hair. And it was nice to meet you both.  :roflmao I don't know if I should listen to the podcast before I go to bed! It was the Indy one and I think Meds might have made a comment on there.

_Little_ pickles? I'm sorry to heat that, no wonder these women are all upset.

So much symbolism, but let's avoid too much Freud and go for the fear of the modern man to lose his superiority and be emasculated by the emancipation of the modern woman.

(You've just been introduced to my brand of humor, please stop leading me into temptation!)
