The whole shirt thing is a little too slick for my tastes. I like my devices old school.

I'm with Sentinel. I'm a sucker for the old style comms. I loved how they made very similar ones on the "Enterprise" series too! :)
Ya. I like the way they "flip up" the old ones. Gene Roddenbery must've been like a fortune teller to know that cell-phones would one day look like that!
TOS it is pretty cool and a little more realistic. How can that small badge function as a universal trans and communicator?

People in the 60s were probably wondering the same thing about the TOS comunicator. ;)
Personally, I like the TNG-style one better. :P For the same reasons mentionned above.
And I thought the UT was a chip inserted in the ear?
i thought it was incorporated in the badge solely
Ya it's not in the ear, just in the badge.
Really?
I remember in an episode od DS9... the one when Quark&gang ended up in the 40s... I think it was called little green men. I remember they were having problems with their UTs and had to go into each others ears or something... :-\
Plus my TNG TM doesn't say anything about it beeing integrated...
It doesnt say anythin in the ST Encyclopedia either but i believe Risky
Thank you Spock!
no prob. Look in the ST Survival Guide. They have detailed info on gadgets
You could also check out the startrek website.
True
The UT in the Next Gen, DS9, etc...series was incorporated into the insignia comm. on their uniform tunics. There's a few episodes where this is pointed out. It's suppose to be basically automatic as an alien speaks it is translated to the listener.

Hmmm... I'll be... you can even remodulate it into a jamming device. :P
But the little green men episode still haunts me...
Its pretty cool what the book says u can do
I liked them both.
I think what I liked more than anything about the OS were the sound effects.
Definitely. i wanna get a cell phone that looks like the TOS communicator, and can flip open like they do in TOS. ;D
I havent seen any of those ever made.
Then I'll invent one and bring it to bell!!! lol
Sounds good. Boy u are a dreamer. ;)

Ya, I am watching this episode right now, and I am wondering the same thing about the UT. I'm thinking that only the Ferengis have it in their ear. That's the only explanation I can think of.
i think it would have been cooler if they used headpieces on away missions... i liked both... i voted TOS though...
At one time the TNG com badge did not incorporate this feature. I guess that change occurred well after the Star Trek The Next Generation Technical Manual was printed...its copyright 1991, so I'm sure its out of date. It says nothing about it being a UT as well as a personal communicator. They even incorporated a diagram to illustrate its features and functions. That detail was added later I guess.
hmmm.... so i guess everybody just spoke english for a while during early TNG then... lol
besides, u cant blow up mountains with the tng comm badges (Friday's Child)...
actually, u probably could, they just chose not to in TNG cause they realized how hokey it was
On one level, the badge made sense. On another level, it was ridiculous. It was simply on/off. There were no other controls on it. What if you needed to set up a feedback loop to distract an enemy or cannibalize parts to form a weapon or better communicator? The TOS communicator made sense because the the hinged cover was also the antenna. It also made a great sound. It was better because at least you could have a private conversation with it. I'm sure it had a silent ring mode as well as voice mail. :-)
thats not completely true... i can think of a few instances where they canibalized the TNG / Voy communicators for various reasons... (usually for the "power cell")

Power cell? O.K. Repurposing? I'm not so sure. Those things seemed so micro miniaturized that you'd need to tell nanites what you wanted done and have them do it. I guess the badges just seem a little odd to me.
ok, the episode thats coming to mind is ___ (i cant remember the name... its the Voyager with the Slip Drive Ship... They thought it was federation but it turns out to be the alien ploy...)
Janeway and Seven are locked in the brig which is sealed off by a forcefield. Janeway uses the powercell from her communicator and attaches to to one of sevens implants. the powercell activates some borg technology that allows seven to pass through the forcefield. Janeway didn't need any tools or anything to activate it either. She pretty much just plugged it in... quick and painless
I SO like TNG well really because thats the one i saw.
I think it does have to do with which one you grew up watching.
I like TOS a ton, but I did grow up watching TNG so that's where my vote went.
im not so sure i agree with you there... when i was little, i was exposed to way more TNG then TOS but i still voted TOS... but its a hard vote cause i really do like both of em a lot...
I picked TNG because i thought the look was smooth and not fuzzy and the mic was better (i have tech reasons obviously) that and i like the TNG gang yo! lol
Well, to me, the TNG communicator makes more sense. Its far more practical and easier to use in a phaser fight, but granted it does not look as cool as flipping up the communicator.
yeah, no doubt... if ur going for practical, then it's TNG all the way... but in terms of coolness / style, i'd have to go with TOS...
I'd always be afraid I'd drop it....kinda like I drop my cell phone!!
Yep, TNG it is!
Okay, but if you find yourself stranded on a techologically backward planet and need electronic parts, you won't have a communicator that you and your landing party can use.
thats not entirely true.... sure the TNG communicator is smaller, but that doesn't mean that it's useless...
I'm sure that it's got some valuable components... plus im sure u could use it in a poker game if u were ever short on cash... just tell em ur a Frenchman if they start asking questions...
lol, also that could be a awsome ninja star! that and It is a symbol of starfleet!
