Los Angeles, CA – December 5, 2008 – SEE Touring Productions and Metropolitan Talent present STAR TREK THE TOUR, the largest interactive Star Trek exhibit ever, which makes its North American debut on January 18th for a limited engagement at the Queen Mary Dome in Long Beach, Calif.

This unprecedented event will give the public the opportunity to step inside the Star Trek world and become active participants in the legacy that has captured the imagination of generations: From the chance to sit on a starship bridge from the Original TV series to traveling through space on motion simulators, STAR TREK THE TOUR offers the whole family the opportunity to be fully immersed in the action. Plus, the Tour features the world's largest collection of authentic Star Trek ships, sets, costumes and props from all 5 TV series and 10 films over the last 40+ years.

William Shatner, who portrayed Star Trek's most iconic character, Captain James T. Kirk, is the official Celebrity Ambassador for the tour and will be making appearances at various times throughout the tour's multi-city run. "STAR TREK THE TOUR promises to be the largest, most interactive and entertaining Star Trek event ever presented to the public," Mr. Shatner said. "This will truly be an impressive experience for the whole family and I am happy to be associated with it."

Tickets will go on sale Friday, December 7th for American Express Cardholders and will be available to the general public beginning on December 15th. The tour lifts off in Long Beach, CA for a limited engagement, and will run through February 17. Following the Long Beach / Los Angeles engagement, the next 4 cities STAR TREK THE TOUR will visit are San Francisco, Minneapolis / St. Paul, Chicago, and Detroit.

Highlights of STAR TREK THE TOUR, which can be fully experienced with an accompanying audio tour, include:

    * The chance to take a ride through a Star Trek adventure in four full-motion, show-based flight simulators.
    * An all-new multimedia Encounter Theater, built like a theater in the round with 360 degree video screens. Computer-generated sequences put visitors in the middle of the Star Trek action.
    * The opportunity for exhibit-goers to sit on a full-size Enterprise bridge from the original TV series and have their photo taken and superimposed with an image of the original cast – including Spock, McCoy and Scotty – to look as if the Enterprise crew is standing right next to them.
    * Detailed recreations of original sets from Star Trek: The Next Generation®, including Captain Picard's quarters, Dr. Crusher's sick bay and the majestic NCC-1701-D Bridge.
    * The ability for guests to star with the original cast in an episode of their choice and watch themselves interact with Star Trek icons such as Spock and Scotty. Guests can take home a DVD of their cameo to share with family and friends.

The 50,000 square foot exhibition is equal in size to nearly two football fields filled with 250 tons of priceless Star Trek sets, original props, costumes and creations. STAR TREK THE TOUR brings together some of Hollywood's finest craftsmen and artists who created and shaped the signature look and image of Star Trek over the years, including production designer Herman Zimmerman, costume designer Robert Blackman, make-up artist Michael Westmore and visual effects creator Dan Curry. All of these original Star Trek artists lent their talents to STAR TREK THE TOUR to provide visitors with an authentic, behind-the-scenes view. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's son, Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry, provides a rare insider's look at what it took to make his father's vision into reality as he narrates a tribute to the man who started it all.

"Years in the making, the creation of STAR TREK THE TOUR has been a voyage of discovery worthy of the show itself," explained Martin Biallas, CEO of SEE Touring Productions, Inc, which is producing the event. "Over the past 10 years, we secured privileged access to the vaults for the Star Trek TV shows and films, plucked select gems and tirelessly assembled the world's leading collection of priceless Star Trek sets, ships, props and costumes. Now, we're bringing Star Trek to life and inviting the public to experience it up-close-and-personal in a way never before possible."

"The universal appeal of STAR TREK THE TOUR is undeniable," explained John Scher, President of Metropolitan Talent. "It has something to offer for everyone -- from 8-year-old children to 80-year-old grandparents, we have all grown up with Star Trek and watched it become one of the most beloved and popular series of all time. It has captured our imagination. Now, for the first time, we're turning fantasy into reality. We're pulling back the curtain to give the public an exclusive opportunity to step inside the Star Trek world for themselves."

STAR TREK THE TOUR, under a licensing agreement with CBS Consumer Products, is produced by SEE Touring Productions Inc. and presented by Metropolitan Talent Inc.

I just read that this tour is going to run over five years in 40 different cities.

I'm glad Long Beach will start it off since that is only about 30 miles from me and I don't have to wait five years for it to come to my city.

Five years???  Geez!  I guess TREK is really back!  ;)
Title: Re: Star Trek : On Tour
Post by: Geekyfanboy on December 06, 2007, 12:24:01 PM
WOW... there is so much to do there.. this is going to be a "many" day event. That three day pass is looking better and better :)

STAR TREK THE TOUR is dedicated to the over forty years of imagination, artistry and meticulous craftsmanship that together have made the Star Trek legacy the most enduring television franchise in history. This is the largest collection of artifacts, sets and information ever put on public display. A truly impressive array of exhibits, featuring sets, costumes, priceless museum pieces and props from all five Star Trek television series and ten Star Trek feature films. Together these components offer Star Trek fans and novices alike, an unprecedented encounter with the phenomenon that is Star Trek.

Here is just a sample of what you will experience at STAR TREK THE TOUR.

A HISTORY OF THE FUTURE
Nine major exhibit areas, plus a variety of displays, interactive kiosks, rare photo opportunities and unique adventures, offer a comprehensive insider's look at Star Trek in all its forms.

THE ROTUNDA
Our journey begins in The Rotunda, a monumental entrance hall that instantly ushers us into the elegant, futuristic Star Trek universe. The centerpiece is the Starship Enterprise herself, an eighteen-foot model of the NCC-1701-A beckons you to leave reality behind and enter a stunning vision of the future. Large models of Starfleet space vessels and iconic reminders of the legacy hover overhead. A video montage of classic Star Trek episodic memories alternates with powerful and familiar musical themes from over four decades of some of Star Trek's greatest moments.

THE U.S.S. ENTERPRISE NCC-1701 HOLOGRAM
As you exit The Rotunda, a holographic U.S.S. Enterprise hovers in space, awaiting the unwary visitor. Reach out to touch her and she goes to warp speed departing for the outer reaches of the Galaxy, shortly to return.

THE GENE RODDENBERRY TRIBUTE
Here is an insight into the mind of the creator of the Star Trek legacy. His personal perceptions of the genesis of one of the most successful and influential evergreen franchises in television history is narrated by his son Rod Roddenberry.

STAR TREK: THE U.S.S ENTERPRISE BRIDGE
Here is where it all began: On the U.S.S. Enterprise bridge from the original Star Trek. Here; Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Sulu, Chekov, and Uhura faced the unknown. Captain Kirk's command chair and the helm console are on display and are available for a unique photo opportunity, allowing you to sit in that famous chair!

THE GRAND ARCHWAY
One of the most impressive parts of the exhibition is a fifty foot radius half-moon display area in the center of the exhibition. It includes six video monitors in massive supporting legs of an overhead arch, each depicting the behind scenes artistry of Star Trek. Scattered among these towers are a series of costume cases filled with original costumes and iconic props from many of your favorite Star Trek series and films.

THE MUSEUM SPACE
Here all Star Trek's worlds "collide" under one magnificent soaring roof. Each corner turned reveals still another of hundreds of Star Trek icons, these are the smaller sets, ornate costumes and familiar props in the STAR TREK THE TOUR Collection. It is a truly priceless collection and is curated as professionally and completely as that of any great museum. The collection before you is considered the most complete and authentic collection of Star Trek items in existence — and that's anywhere in the Galaxy.

THE SAUCER CORRIDOR
It's not hard to imagine that you are now aboard Captain Picard's Enterprise, as a stroll down the corridor brings his exploration of the Star Trek universe sharply into focus as you see first hand settings familiar to the many generations of Star Trek fans, including:

    Captain Jean-Luc Picard's    Living Quarters
    Dr. Beverly Crusher's          Sickbay
    The U.S.S Enterprise-D      Transporter Room  & K Corridor

ENGINEERING SECTION
Here you'd find Geordi La Forge along with the ship's warp drive engine controls and the warp core itself, seen in the heart of the engine room.

THE STAR TREK TIMELINE
Forty years is just a spec of infinitesimal time when compared to the adventures of the Starship Enterprise and her sister ships. This timeline chronicles the entire Star Trek saga, truly "The History of the Future" of the Star Trek Universe and in many ways part of our own here on Earth.

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION COMMAND BRIDGE
Here you will experience the majesty of Captain Picard's famous bridge — where you have the opportunity to see the interior, and pose for a souvenir photograph at the science station or sitting in the Captain's chair. See firsthand and up close an intergalactic battle with a Borg Cube that requires all the cunning and skill the ships of the fleet can bring to bear.

THE SHUTTLECRAFT SIMULATORS
This is the definitive warp speed encounter! Ride wild or mild... two by two... or within a group of intrepid fellow travelers. STAR TREK THE TOUR presents the most unique full-motion based simulator experiences available to the public today. Computer-generated sequences take riders out of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D aboard a Starfleet shuttle and on a thrilling flight through the solar system. Whether aboard the two passenger MaxFlight (wild) units or the fifteen passenger Doron (mild) vehicles, the guest experience is fully satisfying each and every time, and you may want to ride more than once!

INTERACTIVE EXHIBITS
Scattered throughout the circulation area are a number of walk-up interactive Star Trek Trivia Stations where you and your friends can test your trivia skills and be ranked from cadet to captain.

THE FEATURE FILM PLAZA
It is here that we find a collection of models, props and costumes from the feature film "Star Trek Nemesis". A treasure trove of icons never before seen on the North American continent: The Romulan Scorpion two-man fighter, impressive with its sleek organic curves; the massive cage in which Captain Picard was imprisoned; the magnificent costume and cloak worn by Shinzon in his bid to destroy Earth.

THE ENCOUNTER THEATER
Enter a classroom lecture on Starship Engineering and become involved in the most innovative and exciting multimedia adventures ever created in themed entertainment. Every one of your senses is challenged with this truly out of this world experience.

STARFLEET PROVISIONS
Trekkie or Trekker... there's always time to shop and STAR TREK THE TOUR provides an exclusive opportunity to select Star Trek and Tour specific merchandise available nowhere else on Earth — and there's also plenty of great food too — although you may have to get used to Klingon bloodwine or fresh Pipius claw. Whatever your choices, there is always time to reflect on your Star Trek experience and on behalf of your crew at STAR TREK THE TOUR, thanks for sharing it with us.

IESB.Net has some cool footage of interviews with William Shatner and also a video of what the Titan sequence with Wesley Crusher and Tuvok looks like. It's actually pretty awesome! And they also have quite a few pictures of the stars on opening day. Here is the link:

Thanks for the link -
The Star Trek Tour: Bill Shatner Press Conference and Q&A is worth a look.
Shatner is very gracious about his current trek movie status and former roll as Captain of the Enterprise. You can't help but like him - he would have made a fine politician.

Quite a few of the items were created specifically for this show.  This is more a display and an event than a museum show.  Plus, easier to insure that way.  ;)

Well do they say that these are original props?? And you do realize that they make a ton of extra props just in case they break. I mean in one of the pictures we see Picards flute.. well we all know that the original one sold at Christies so this must be reproduced.

I don't know what, if any, representations they make regarding the props or models. It may be a hodge podge of real and reproductions like at ST-The Experince. I am looking forward to seeing all the set reconstructed set pieces, I just get more of a thrill from seeing real screen used props and models. Those uniforms and costumes look very authentic. I hope Phoenix is the next stop!

Wow, that Q pass is incredible...

not sure if anyone posted this yet but Wil Wheaton posted a short entry about the Tour and added some pics to his Flickr.

http://wilwheaton.typepad.com/wwdnbackup/2008/01/going-boldly.html

QuoteWhen I was a teenager, I got tired of sitting in this chair really fast. As an adult, though, it brings back only fond memories. Seconds before this photo was taken, I typed my fingers across the Okudagram, using the same series of commands that I made up to send the ship to warp speed.

Yes, I was such a geek, I invented my own fake logic for driving the spaceship. When you're sitting there saying 'Aye, Sir,' for hours at a time, you've got to do something to keep yourself entertained, right?

Man; I wish the tour was heading my way.  I think I'll have to plan on driving to Indy to  see it.

I found this clip of Wheaton as Crusher and Russ as Tuvok on the U.S.S. Titan.  Looks like it will be pretty amazing!

The whole tour reminds me of Star Trek: The Experience.  (Man; I need to visit that again as well!)

Just got back from day one all I have to say is WOW.. that a unbelievable experience.. 305 pictures in three hours.. I actually filed up my card, I didn't realize I choose the second largest photo setting. Luckily I get to go back Saturday and Sunday so I can take more photos. We also took about an hour and a half of video.

I called in three reports to Rico hotline.. I hope they were clear enough to play on one of his podcasts.

You walk in and the first thing you see it a saucer section of the crashed Enterprise D which btw is AWESOME. There's video of various Star Trek clips playing and various Star Trek music playing in the background. Even before you enter the exhibit you can see models of various ships and also a very cool and large model of the Enterprise A. There are so many cool things to see.. so many props and costumes from all the series and movies. Videos playing everywhere. The TOS bridge, TNG bridge (that was my favorite), Picards quarters (AWESOME), TNG Sickbay, TNG  Transporter room and TNG Engineering. What is great is you can actually walk on to the TOS and TNG Bridge, You also can be transported on and off the transporter padd. There are two simulators, one is an actually shuttle craft and they other is also a simulator but it only fits two people and it's so much more fun. We did do this today but there is a scene from TOS that you do against a green screen and they put it on DVD for you. Also something else that we plan on doing on Sunday is there is an audio tour you can do.. each prop and costume has a number on it, if you type in the number you get a bit of info about that item. They also have a gift shop with some pretty cool things and a food placed called of course Ten Forward (don't look anything like the read thing). The last thing you do before you leave is the Titan experience. It's a 360 kind of video presentation and simulation with Will Wheaton and Tim Russ.

All in all a fantastic experience. I think you would be able to get everything done in one day but it's much more enjoyable when you are not in a hurry and can look at every detail of every prop and costume. We head back tomorrow with friend bright and early.

If this comes to your town it's a must see for any Trek fan... well worth the ticket price.

Just got back from day two.. so much fun. Today Harry and I joined up with three other friends. We did the Green screen TOS scene and they put it on DVD. We were renegade Kahn followers and we high jacked a Klingon bird of prey and attacked the Enterprise... it was a lot of fun. Took more photos of us on the TOS and TNG Bridge. Took another 250 photos and about another hour of DV footage. We also did the Titian 360 experience. It was a lot of fun. It was good to see Will Wheaton back on uniform.

Here are some more photos.. I'm going to work on getting some for the video up soon.. I'll post a link when that happens.. .but for now enjoy the photos..

Tomorrow we take the audio tour and take more photos and video.

Well just got back from Day three of Star Trek the Tour... it was hard to leave.. we pretty much did everything a few times, took over 1200 pictures (about 800 are decent) and took about three hours of video.

Today we did the audio tour.. about 2/3'd of the props and costumes have numbers next to them and if you do the audio tour they give you a little "wand" with a key pad. You type in the number and hold it up to your ear and you get a little tidbit about that item. Most of the stuff I already knew as I'm sure most of you would as well.. but if you are not an uber fan then it's very informative and both Harry and I really enjoyed it. Look about an hour and half to listening to everything.

This was a fantastic three day adventure. It could have been done in a day, you can see and do everything in a day but we enjoyed going back again and again.

Here are few more pictures.. I'll be building a webpage for my website and plan on posting up some of our video.. we got some great stuff.

FYI, they are going to have a press conference soon to announce the fact that Star Trek The Experience is closing it's doors in 2009. We announced it on Anomaly podcast almost a year ago... I can't name my source but he works in the theme park industry.
I have never been to the Experience! We should all plan a trip before it closes!

Yeah I have heard rumors that it was going to close.. I know the contract expires in 2009 and the Hilton hasn't picked it back up yet.. if it does close that will be a huge shame and it is such a great attraction to go to while in Vegas.. Hey Hawk.. we are talking about two different things.. Star Trek the Tour (which is this thread) is a traveling Tour.. it just finished it's run here in CA and is moving on to another City..

As for Star Trek The Experience there is no official word yet that it is being shut down,  I know the lease is up in 2009 but they haven't said "officially" if it's going to be shut down. And if it is... I'm sure the stuff will be given to the Tour as that continues for another five years.

Finally some new about Star Trek The Tour...

http://thedistrictweekly.com/daily/writing-shotgun/star-trek-the-tour-finally-gets-released-from-space-jail/

"STAR TREK THE TOUR" FINALLY GETS RELEASED FROM SPACE JAIL
Theo DouglasWed. May 21

Remember "Star Trek the Tour," that fantastical Queen Mary exhibit of all things Trekkie–uniforms and phasers and a real live fake Starship Enterprise? The rumor mill had it opening in San Diego last Thursday–but it's still here, locked up in space jail, which is what Vulcans call the old Spruce Goose dome.

Confused? This is a complicated story–mainly because almost no one connected with this space oddity of a traveling sideshow wants to say much about it. It's as if the captains of this tour were sucked into a black hole, which is either not far from the truth or light years away from it.

"Star Trek the Tour" set its coordinates for Long Beach in January, the month after crews finished filming that new Star Trek movie in Lincoln Park. Coincidence, my young Paduan apprentice? Wrong sci-fi franchise. Idiot! The show was originally scheduled to close in mid-February, but for some reason it was held it over another two weeks.

Then, it closed in March–and stayed another two months. Lawyers for Save the Queen (STQ), which runs the Queen Mary and its surroundings, figured the folks at SEE Touring Productions in Los Angeles–which owned the Tour–owed them an extra $200,000 for security and food and lodging aboard the Queen Mary. So they just kept the "Tour." Set your phasers to "stun."

"There is still a lot of equipment over there, because [if] we let them take the equipment then we don't have anything to hold over them," a source close to the exhibit confirmed for me earlier this week. "It is not a pleasant situation as I understand it." (The source declined to be identified, for fear of jeopardizing their livelihood.)

That's why the exhibit has been hanging around. Also, according to Paul Konapelsky, general counsel for Save the Queen, SEE Touring decided to beam itself up while all this was going on, and it no longer owns Star Trek the Tour.

Representatives of SEE Touring did not respond to repeated telephone messages requesting comment. But somehow–and this is where people really stopped taking my calls–ownership of the Tour has passed to an outfit in Greenwich, Connecticut called Plainfield Asset Management.

Plainfield Asset Management–the name just screams "science fiction," doesn't it? "The firm manages investment capital for institutions and high net worth individuals based in the United States and abroad," according to its website, and that's all I want to say about that.

I reached Plainfield's Michael Lehman late in the afternoon Friday, most likely because he thought I was someone else, and he agreed to talk on Monday. That's when the radio went dead. Neither Lehman nor another Plainfield man named Joe Benzivenga would say another word, probably because they were talking settlement.

"Let me see if I can reach him and get him a message," Lehman's secretary said at one point. "What was your name again–Koto?" Almost. Then, yesterday, it happened–and by it, I mean nothing. Konapelsky called the next day.

"Plainfield put up the money for the promoter and they got into a dispute, the exact extent of which I'm not familiar with–nor do I care to be," Konapelsky said with a chuckle.

"They have been going back and forth for probably the past two months. They actually, finally reached an agreement this past Sunday which in turn resulted in Plainfield acquiring everything, rather than just having a security interest in [the exhibit]. It's my understanding that they have a new promoter who is going to pick up and run the show." And also?

"We reached an agreement with Plainfield," Konapelsky added. "They paid us yesterday, and they are going to have the dome loaded out by June 6." June 6–isn't that the first day of the Ink-N-Iron tattoo festival? Konapelsky said Plainfield probably won't wait that long. Most of the Star Trek memorabilia will probably be picked up just as soon as it can get a ride.

And that's it. "Qapla," as the Klingons say–"success!" To some.

Yes, that is a mess, I wonder what will happen to the tour, as this news is certainly not good. I feel bad for Star Trek fans, and just Trek in general. At times it seems like CBS/Paramount do not do enough due diligence on some of these things, and in the end, things like this just make Trek look bad. I get the feeling that who ever owns Trek is just looking for money, and do not bother actually making sure the people wanting to do things like this tour, can actually pull it off. People might think Lucas and his group are a bit overbearing on the Star Wars license, but at least they always make sure that things like this would not happen. They had there issues with C4, but at least that came off successfully on the whole. I really hope this tour can get back up and running, as it would be a pity if it was mothballed, or the parts just sold off. It would be nice if the Roddenberrys owned Trek like Lucas does with Star Wars, then more care would be given to it.

Yeah that's my worry.. if The Tour can't do well in Los Angeles and make money how do they expect it to do well in other less populated cities..

I think if this new company continues the tour they will make changes to the tour and how many cities they plan to visit.

I think this is the Tour.. at least it sounds like it.. new company new name.. let's hope it makes it past it's first stop in San Diego...

Premier Exhibitions presenting Star Trek The Exhibition

Premier Exhibitions Inc. is launching a Sci-Fi exhibition it hopes will be long and prosperous.

The Atlanta-based company will present "Star Trek The Exhibition," beginning June 21 at the San Diego Air and Space Museum in Balboa Park. Future cities and dates are expected to be announced later.

The Sci-Fi exhibition will feature the world's most comprehensive collection of authentic Star Trek ships, sets, costumes and props from five TV series and 10 films over the last 40-plus years. Visitors will be able to ride through a Star Trek adventure in full motion Star Trek-based flight simulators, sit on a full size U.S.S. Enterprise bridge from the original television series and view detailed re-creations of original sets.

"The universal appeal of these beloved television series and blockbuster films allows us the opportunity to bring an exclusive experience that will not only capture the imagination of visitors but allow each to turn fantasy into reality," said Bruce Eskowitz, CEO of Premier Exhibitions. "We're taking families on a voyage through the history of the future."

Here is some more info I found online..

'Star Trek The Tour' Is Now 'Star Trek The Exhibition'

By T'Bonz
June 15, 2008 - 8:11 PM

After being delayed due to financial issues and a change in ownership, Star Trek The Exhibition is on the move to San Diego, California.

As reported by aerospacemuseum.org, Star Trek The Exhibition is due to open in San Diego on the 21st of June at the San Diego Air & Space Museum located in Balboa Park.

Highlights from the exhibition features recreations of original sets from Star Trek: The Next Generation, two full-motion flight simulators to take fans "through the galaxy", interactive episodes where fans can "star" with the original cast and have a DVD made of the experience, and a full-sized bridge from the original series Enterprise, where fans can have their photos taken and superimposed with an image of the original cast including Spock, Dr. McCoy and Scotty.

According to an article at TrekMovie.com, Star Trek The Exhibition is "more compact". Because of this, it will be traveling to more cities, as it is expected that two shows can be run simultaneously.

Star Trek The Exhibition will be staying in each city for a longer time. It is expected that Star Trek The Exhibition will remain in San Diego throughout the rest of the year.

Ticket prices for the event will also be lower than they had been when it appeared in Long Beach, with discounts available for students, military members, senior citizens and museum members.

The more I read the more I'm glad we got to go in Long Beach.. the new version sounds smaller. Doesn't sound like there is a TNG Bridge set, sounds like there are less props and doesn't seem like they have the Titian experience. Still won't stop me from driving down there one day and attending. :)

I was just reading up.. this one seems to have the TNG bridge. In LA it had both the TOS and TNG before is was sold. And when it was down in San Diego it had the TOS bridge.. looks like it's swapping back and forth with which Bridge you can get your photo on.

I want to see it travel overseas! (Hint: UK!)

I did get to see the Star Trek exhibition at the Science Museum in London once-upon-a-time (same time as Voyager was launching). They had a static TOS bridge on display but there was no entry and no photos. This sounds like a whole different experience.

The front page of the Detroit Free Press has a big article on it today about it coming to Detroit. I'll try and scan it when I get home and post it. I don't think they mention future dates but it's suppose to stay in Detroit a good part of next year from Feb. to Sept.  Which is a very long time, I think. They might be waiting to see how the show continues to do and how the movie turns out. I know it was suppose to hit Texas at some point.

OK, I'm back! Unfortunately, photo's were not allowed in the exhibit, so I took one pic outside which is below. I really enjoyed this a lot.  :thumbsup :thumbsup The exhibit rooms are well laid out and the items all all shown very well. The majority of things on display are costumes, followed by props, and some models.

The costumes are awesome and all very much authentic, including Khans outfit and TOS, TMP Kirk, and TWOK Kirk which were some of my favorites. It was great to be able to slowly examine all the details on a TWOK Engineering suit as well. They also had an original Klingon shirt and Kang's wife's uniform from "Day of the Dove"! SWEET! TNG was very well represented as well, including uniforms, Troi outfits, and Picard's Robin Hood garb! As you wandered through the exhibit rooms, there were lot's of interesting Star Trek info to read as well as production info and real space/science stuff. They also had Shinzons outfit which was great seeing close up.

The props were a mixed bag of original, screen used items and reproductions. As a prop snob, I was a bit disappointed in that, I love to see actual screen used items but most of those were sold by Paramount at that huge Star Trek auction 2 years ago. This was also my complaint about Star Trek: The Experience, where props and costumes were for the most part reproductions and not original. Each prop item is displayed and they do make mention of which are "prop reproductions", mostly phasers and communicators. They did have some real prop tricorders and medical gear from TNG and the movies, as well as an Enterprise Plasma Pistol, which is very cool. They had a replica of Kirk's command chair as well.

Models included as massive saucer section of the Enterprise D, most likely used in the scene in Generations after the crash landing and used for close up shots. It's gotta be 10 feet across! Models on display of the ships of the series were all just chrome painted AMT/ERTL kits, although they had a very nice TOS Enterprise which seemed to be larger than MR model, so I'm not sure where that came from. They had some somewhat obscure screen used ship and shuttle models as well, again most of the main filming miniatures having been sold at auction...and now at Paul Allen's museum in Seattle. They did have the full size Scorpion from Nemesis.

Set pieces included a mock up of TNG sick bay, engineering, and a spectacular full mock up of the E-D bridge! It was awesome! I sat in all the chairs and they had a view screen showing starts streaking by and the gentle hum of the engines playing. Those chairs that Data and Wes sat in? Super comfy! And I sat in the command chair and it was VERY cool. I really loved that and went back a few times to sit in them as I was practically the only person there in the exhibit at the time. And yes, I said, "Engage" a few times.  :blush
At the end of the exhibit, they have a recreation of Quarks Bar as well as a gift shop with some stuff but I didn't buy anything. They have the transporter photo op thing but it was closed. I did do the motion ride, which was just ok, it's just a flight sim with some Star Trek elements thrown in, kind of feels like an afterthought and it makes you a bit quesey.

All in all, a great time and I really enjoyed spending time examining all the stuff!  ;D

I just went back and looked at Kenny's pics and a ton of things he saw are NOT included in this road show. The one in CA had WAY more stuff! It's probably to be expected that it has been scaled down.

Actually, is I mentioned, there were way more original items here than at the Experience, especially in the costumes, which I really enjoyed. I'll bet a dollar they don't allow photo's at any of the other shows. The pics in the article you posted Rico, not a lot of that was in the tour show. They will want to limit the photo's available online to increase on site visitors at $20 a pop. They even had a science center staff person wandering around to make sure you didn't take pics...or sit in the TOS Command chair like I wanted to. Remember Kenny, yours was the premiere show with lot's of extra stuff. Allowing pics there just generates interest. Now that it's on tour, they likely want to limit that. It's still well worth $20, I spent almost 2 hours walking through slowly.

Bryan you do know they have now split the show in two?  What you saw will not be coming to Detroit.  The other portion of the show (currently in Washington DC) is what is moving to Detroit in February.  I also still hope pictures are allowed.  I don't think having pics all over the web keeps people away.  Perhaps a little, but it's more likely to get people to go.  It's free advertising.  I also wonder how they limit camera phone pictures?  Those are very hard to police and some can take pretty ok pictures now.  I also don't like the idea of them changing the rules.  The whole copyright line seems pretty bogus to me.  Anyway, looks like I might need to break out my James Bond camera if I go (I'm not kidding, I actually have a miniature camera that looks like a lighter).  ;)

No pictures, thats rubbish. I mean i'm not being funny but anyone going to a Star Trek Exhibit will want to take photo's, we all know what phasers, tricorders, the bridge look like so whats the problem with taking a few pics. As for reproductions, well thats part and parcel of the gig, I've seen countless amounts of Police Box's and i think only one of them was a prop used in filming. I wish i could get a chance to see this show, Rico, get that spy camera out and lets get some pics up here.

Yeah, prop reproductions under glass mean nothing to me. I can buy an AA or MR phaser and have it at home if I want. I love to see the thing which were the ACTUAL things I saw on screen. ST still has many actual props not in private hands and in circulation and the one's at this Exhibit were very good, better than ST-The Experience, IMO.

Again with the LA one there was only one maybe two reproductions. And they clearly said they were.. everything else were actually costumes and props.

I was in San Diego for the Exhibition and thought it was awesome. I understand there are two or more versions of the Exhibition. This one featured the full bridge of TOS (Mirror Universe version), a mockup of the TNG corridor, Picard's quarters, TNG transporter, numerous costumes and props, and a timeline exhibit.. The other version could be the one in Detroit will feature a full mockup of the TNG bridge instead of the TOS .. can anyone verify.. I'm in Northern California, so I may catch it again in SF..

Well hello - and welcome.  There are two current versions of the Exhibit.  From what I know one is larger and one slightly smaller.  The main larger one is due in Detroit in mid. February.  Since that is local to me I will be going and once I see it I can pass along what it includes.  Still about a month away from starting here.

I think the TOS bridge is the Detroit verson which will be traveling up north and the TNG is goint to I think Texas which will be the TNG version.  I read that a while back someplace because I remember being disappointed that I wouldn't get to see the TOS bridge.

I hope I'm wrong, lol

Although I would have preferred the TOS set, I have to say the TNG mock up was very cool and I was there during the week and it was empty, so I could just sit in all the chairs and hang out! The command chair is cool but Data's station was sweet!

A DS9 Ops setup would be cool, but I really like DS9.

They do not live in their mothers' basements

Most, in fact, have basements of their own.

One is a neurosurgical nurse, another an administrative assistant and another a parts assembler. They happen to constitute a part of metro Detroit's most avid "Star Trek" fan base. The Dearborn-based group calls itself the USS Intrepid NCC-1730.

An added layer of buzz pervaded the group earlier this month as it discussed the impending opening of "Star Trek: The Exhibition" at the Detroit Science Center on Saturday, the first Midwest stop for the exhibit, which premiered last summer in California.

"We were quite shocked it was coming so soon to Detroit," said Jan Pawlik of Westland, the Henry Ford Hospital neurosurgical nurse who serves as the group's chief of security (nearly all fan club members have officer titles or crew member designations). "We weren't expecting it until at least September."

The USS Intrepid, which is one of hundreds of clubs across the nation dedicated to "Star Trek," boasts about 120 members and represents the hordes of enthusiastic "Star Trek" fans in metro Detroit whose attraction to the series is lifelong.

For 21 years, they have been drawn together by their appreciation of how "Star Trek" portrays the future and by their admiration of Dr. McCoy, Capt. Kirk and Mr. Spock.

"That's like the holy trinity for us!" said their captain, Anthony Lesnick of Dearborn, as a dozen people gathered around a conference table at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center in Dearborn earlier this month for one of their regular USS Intrepid meetings.

The members spent a portion of their meeting discussing the exhibit and how they might volunteer for it by visiting in their medical and command section uniforms.

"We need you to bring honor to Starfleet," said Debra Shoultz of Troy, chief science officer for the club, reading from a Science Center e-mail and drawing chuckles.

Science Center officials say they have been receiving a constant flow of calls from fans since the Free Press broke the news of the impending exhibit in December, including rabid Klingon admirers who want to check out the exhibit (dressed in their warrior costumes) from states such as Illinois and countries as far away as Australia.

Todd Slisher, vice president of science programs at the Science Center, said a major reason why the center wanted the exhibit is the "Star Trek" series' "history of having a very positive view of the future and of technology in that future."

Added Slisher: "I mean, 'Star Trek' is just so cool!"

Slisher anticipates about 150,000 visitors for the duration of the exhibit, which will run through Sept. 7 and, officials hope, capitalize on any interest piqued by the J.J. Abrams-directed "Star Trek" film to be released in May.

Premier Exhibitions, which organized the exhibit, used several set and graphic designers from the "Star Trek" TV series and films to give an authentic feel to re-creations of key scenes, such as the bridge of the USS Enterprise, a transporter, a starship saucer corridor and Capt. Jean-Luc Picard's ready room.

Fans like Pawlik say they are eager to inspect some of the exhibition's props and memorabilia, like the model of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701D, which was filmed over and over for "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

Even more, they would like people to broaden their perception of "Star Trek" from a nerdy obsession with tricorders, communicators and Klingons to a perspective -- especially in this rough economic environment -- in which all ages and ethnicities can work toward a future free from homelessness, disease and poverty.

"What's wrong with thinking ahead to no homelessness and no poverty?" Lesnick said. "We can't make the whole world a better place, but we are working to do it for our little corner."

The group has gone after members' ideals with several 24-hour Trek-a-Thon fund-raisers since its formation in 1988. Together, the Trek-a-Thons have netted $30,000 for the Penrickton Center for Blind Children in Taylor.

Each year, the group holds a Taste of Trek, where spaghetti becomes the Klingon delicacy ga'ah and oatmeal-chocolate-chip-cornflake treats become Horta cookies. The USS Intrepid also holds an annual All-Galaxy Federation Invitational Bowling Tournament where participants break into teams of "Star Trek" races, pitting Klingons against Romulans and Cardassians against Vulcans.

They know their giddiness over Mr. Spock PEZ dispensers and Klingon bat'leths sets them apart, but as Cheryl Buchanczenko said, "we like being different" and "they accept me." Buchanczenko of Woodhaven, a group yeoman, met her husband, Orest Buchanczenko, through the group.

The Buchanczenkos are one of at least a half-dozen love matches within the group. Pawlik, the chief of security, just got engaged to Armando Flores, the group's first officer. Lesnick, the group's captain, is married to Wendy Lesnick, the engineering chief. They have a 2-year-old son, Karol, who already owns a reptilian baby Gorn outfit.

"I've not only kissed a girl," said Lesnick, referring to his role in breaking the closeted, asexual stereotype of Trekkies, "but look!" he said, grinning and pointing to his bustling toddler.

Go! Go while you have the free time to make a day of it (or however long you need)!

Has anyone gone to this lately? Rico, I know you were planning on it. Have you been yet? I guess there is no hurry since it will be there until September.

So far it's been to San Diego, CA, Phoenix, AZ, Detroit, MI and Philadelphia, PA I wonder where they are going next...

I mentioned it briefly in the podcast today.  I'm still definitely going - just haven't gotten to it yet.  Hopefully soon.  I think I'll treat myself after I come back from the S. Carolina interview.

May have to take a six hour drive up north for this. :)

'Star Trek' boldly comes to the Tech Museum in San Jose

The Tech Museum is boldly going where only a few museums across the country have gone before.

On Oct. 23, the Tech will open "Star Trek: The Exhibition," a show of memorabilia and re-creations of sets from the "Star Trek" films and television series that has drawn big crowds at museums in Detroit, Philadelphia and San Diego over the past year. Tickets are already on sale, and Elizabeth Williams, the Tech's senior director of marketing, said the show will run at least through the Christmas holidays "and could go beyond that if things go well."

"Star Trek" is the latest blockbuster exhibit to come to the Tech, which has been aggressively pursuing traveling shows that fit into its science and technology emphasis. Most recently, the museum saw its attendance skyrocket with "Leonardo: 500 Years into the Future," an exhibit of the works of Leonardo da Vinci.

"Once again, we've successfully endeavored to bring our visitors an exhibition that everyone on the planet — and even strange new worlds — can relate to, learn from and enjoy," said Tech President Peter Freiss. "Housing the exhibition at the Tech Museum is perfectly logical."

To accommodate the "Star Trek" show — which will take up more than 15,000 square feet — the Tech will take over the adjacent Parkside Hall. (The hall is operated by Team San Jose, which is a partner in bringing in the show.)

The version of the exhibition that will come to San Jose is larger than those that have been installed in other museums, although much of it is currently at the Detroit Science Center. "The producers of the show were very excited when they saw the space they had to work with, which is significantly more than they had in Detroit," said Williams, adding that additional exhibits are being put together in Los Angeles for the Tech showing.

The exhibit will include an authentic replica of the bridge from the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 (that would be the Enterprise from the original TV series), the actual shooting model of the Borg Cube (from the later TV series plus the film "Star Trek: First Contact") and all manner of costumes and props drawn from all five "Star Trek" TV shows and the 11 movies.

There will also be a "Star Trek" adventure full-motion flight simulator for those who want to experience a little warp drive.

And the show will have one new aspect for its San Jose visit: artifacts from the latest "Star Trek" film, which revitalized the franchise earlier this year.

"Many of the comments they got in Detroit about the show were about why the new film wasn't part of the exhibit and why it wasn't part of the historical timeline in the exhibit," Williams said. That gap in the space-time continuum will be plugged in the revised version.

So they are sending it back to California?  Why??  It's been there already for a very long time.  It would be nice to share this with more of the rest of the country.

Yeah, I know that Kenny.  I used to live there.  But still, it seems a bit odd to bring it back to the west coast already.  They should have put it in Chicago or somewhere in the middle of country or maybe on the east coast somewhere.  Spread the "Trek love" around!  ;)

Could have something to do with the efforts to bring back the Experience to Vegas, although I hear the guy who was trying to do that has money problems. A lot of what's on the tour came from there.
